Topic: Is Sonic Adventure really so bad?

I want to know because I've never played it before and it's coming out on PSN and Xbox live.

IGN recently did a review, tore it to pieces, told everyone to ignore the rerelease and gave it a 3.5. Now, is that IGN being IGN or should I just ignore it and wait for a better Dreamcast game to come out?

I'm still curious...

When it first came out for the Dreamcast, it was a good game at its Time, But looking at it now, it really was a bad game.
Bad Voice acting, Glichie gameplay, and really bad Story to the game.
Your better off waiting for Sonic Adventure 2, its a little better then this game.

I'm still waiting for Sega to make a Sonic game that plays like Sonic 3.........

For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.

Well I'm waiting for the PSN version, which has been delayed unitl next week so I don't know the price yet, but I imagine it wil be between £5 and £8.

I think Sonic Adventure 2 is coming and Crazy Taxi but I'm not sure what else. I want to play something from the Dreamcast at some point in my life!

As someone who has only played the GC version (and paid the full $40 for it back in 2003), I didn't think it was that bad. It's not a great game by any means, but it isn't 3.5-caliber bad either. As a $10 XBLA download (plus an extra $5 if you want the DX Mission mode and Game Gear titles), I'd say that's a decent and fair price for it now. I'd give the core game itself about a 6 or 6.5, with a bit extra added on for the GG titles if you'd count those, as some of them hold up quite well.

Like @JumpMad said, I remember playing it on the dreamcast and really enjoying it. So, years later I got the DX port for the Gamecube and it was "meh". So, I wondered if it was the remake that wasn't good or if the game just didn't age well, and went back and played the original again and it was "meh".

So, best I can say is you may enjoy the first play-through. IMO it's really the best 3D Sonic game (that's not saying much), except the day sections of Sonic Unleashed. But the game is awfully outdated and misses that "polish" you would expect. It did not age well, compared to say... Wind Waker. Which is surprising considering the art style for Sonic really SHOULD age well, but... it didn't.

I'd say, pick up the DX version and play on your Wii. You should be able to catch it for less than $5.

BTW, Crazy Taxi and Power Stones were some of my fondest memories on the Dreamcast. I mean, I'm surprised I didn't burn a hole on the cds from overplaying them. Really fun games, that you can even pick up and play for short bursts.

Oh, come on. Sonic Adventure and (especially) Sonic Adventure 2 are both great games, even now. Plus, they have the addictive Chao Gardens. Sonic didn't start going downhill in 3D until Sonic Heroes. There's nothing wrong with a lazy port of an already great console game for just $10 or $15 with the DX features.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

What? NO. They're great games. Everyone I know loved those games on the Dreamcast. I don't know what IGN is on about, unless the ports are horrendous aberrations of the originals. Even today they play well; certainly much better than I've what I've heard of the newest 3D Sonic games.

Sonic 4 looks as if it plays more like the Rush series than Sonic 3 to me, the Adventure games on DC where ok I thought, played a lot better, also played a lot worse, pretty average but still fun games, in a 6/10 to 7/10 kind of way, nothing mind blowing but found them decent enough.

Sonic Adventure was (in my opinion) wasn't as good as the Genesis games, but it still was an awesome Sonic game. Remember, you can't spell IGNorant without IGN.

I'm back (for the moment)!

I still play the adventure games occasionally on my DC. The original DC review is still on IGN and gives it a much higher score; give that a read to learn more about the game itself. They were amazing games at the time, but that was 10 years ago. If the port of the game is faithful to the original and doesn't add bugs (Sega can be lazy), I'd say get it. The problem with 3D Sonics is they never really improved the mechanics after the DC era, but they were great for the time.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

no. the dreamcast version is better in one way: Less glitches. But get the GameCube one for more content (mission mode classic sonic games built in etc.)

Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was great, and so was Sonic Adventure 2. I don't know about re-releases, but both of the originals were really fun (kitsch aside).

@all thanks for the info. I'm gonna get it, but psn being what it is I'll have to wait till next week now, if there's anyone lazier than Sega it's Sony of Europe. I hope those who get it on XBL enjoy it! Next stop WiiWare, why not? (size limitations I expect). Anyway, glad to see you can come to a site called NintendoLife to find people to stick up for Sega's favourite mascot. Long live Sonic!

Neither game is outright BAD, you just have to put up with some abysmal camera angles at times. It's completely worth it though, and you're getting a lot of content. I lol'[email protected] rating though.

StarBoy91

I don't think Sonic Adventure is a bad game at all. I only played the GameCube DX Director's Cut remake, never the Dreamcast original, but I think it's fun.
