Super Mario 64 never has and will be overrated. It truly deserves it's praise.
Yeah, Mario 64 is brilliant. It's as fun today as it was when it was released. It's easily better than any of the 3D Mario games that have come after it. I honestly believe it's pretty much a perfect game as far as platformers go. In my opinion, the best thing Nintendo has ever put out.
I wouldn't say perfect - it has some camera issues (granted it's nowhere near as bad as the DS version) and some of the later stages, especially Rainbow Road, can be downright irritating for all the wrong reasons. Plus it still has some glitches here and there. It is pretty great, though.
I thought it was amazing when I first laid my eyes and hands on the N64 back in 1999. And I thought it was amazing when I played it yesterday on my Wii. Apart from some camera angle nuisances, it really is a perfect game that still holds up pretty well today. To me it's a tie between 64 and Galaxy.
Nope, I've always considered the game one of the best Mario games in the series, and I still think it's a brilliant game today. Same with the DS remake.
For me it had the best pacing for any 3d Mario game to date. I loved going back into the world for a different star only to find that the world changed! Great level design and a wonderful way to introduce analog controls to a console! (Still like Banjo Kazooie better )

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
None of the 3D Mario games are overrated. Mario 64 was as important for 3D platformers as Super Mario Bros. was for 2D platformers. 3D platformers are still relevant today because of games like Sunshine and Galaxy. They're all still a lot of fun in a way that most modern games aren't, imo.
One thing i think we can all agree on is that New Super Mario Bros. 2 should of never of been made.
Both New Super Mario Bros 2 and 3D Land could have been just fine in 60fps. (Both released too early I think. I would have preferred other stuff until they had mastered the hardware better).

Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
I first played the Wii VC version somewhere around year 2010, having played the Galaxies and Sunshine before. I wanted to get some more 3D-Mario goodness so Mario 64 was the natural way to go; I was really pumped up for it too having read all the reviews basically calling it the greatest game there ever was or will be.
So when I fired up the game, my mind not tinted by nostalgia... I was sorely disappointed. Being an N64 game graphics of course are what they are, but the camera is horrendous, the controls are slippery and I wasn't a fan of the level design either. It just wasn't fun. Maybe it gets better later on; I stopped playing after, like 10 stars.
Tl;Dr: Yes it's over-rated and has aged poorly.
It seems this thread has found some new life, so I might as well repost my old statement, of which I still stand behind BTW. I can appreciate it's achievements being the forerunner of 3D-platforming and all, but I shan't ever like it as a standalone game, just like I admire the first computers, but I still wouldn't want to use an ineffective power hog the size of my room.
Currently on the plate:
Mount and Blade: Warband – Napoleonic Wars
Chivalry
Super Mario 3D World – Finishing the last few levels.
Mario Kart 8

I agree that NSMB2 is the most unnecessary game in the series, but I still had some fun with it. It's the most forgettable and uninspired, but the coin gimmick works surprisingly well. If it weren't for the focus on collecting coins it would be rather dull, but it's actually quite addicting.
New Super Mario Bros. U / Luigi U on the other hand, is by far the best in the series. It actually feels new for once. Not to mention that the visuals are outstanding and make the game feel much less generic.

It's my all time favourite game, so for me it's not overrated by any means.
It really was something unique and special at the time. Everything was jawdropping, the looks, the worlds, controls, music. It has a special place in my gaming heart
I waited about a year before getting New Super Mario Bros. 2 - I wanted to get it quite cheap because I agree its unnecessary. Still a decent platformer but nothing you haven't already seen before from a Mario game.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
The game itself has aged well in my opinion, the graphics maybe not. I never played the N64 version, I have however played the DS version. Bear in mind I believe that Ocarina of Time has aged badly having played the 3DS version and not the N64 version once again (just to give another example), so make of that what you wish.
Still one of the best games ever. I never 100% until about two years ago. I remeber trying to figure out how to get some of the stars as a nine yeat old sitting in front of my n64. Now I can breeze through the game so fast on the Wii. For those of you who say older games are harder, think again. I still have a hard time with that one star in Super Mario Galaxy. You know, Luigi's Purple Coins? Yeah, you know what I'm talking about. Super Mario 64 was overall easier than that one star in SMG.
