hey evreyone im new to this forum thingumajig so sorry if youve seen this all before... i want your opinion on the best way to go to start playing retro games again i did grow up around the nes snes and sega genesis but ive actually remember only owning a snes for a short period of time and i didnt get it new it was my moms and its like one day it just dissapeared.

My relatives owned systems though thats how i played them but i wasnt hardcore about it and in all reality im not that good of a gamer i honestly just like the nostalgic feel when i think about them and ive recently been binging on old video game reviews like avgn and pat the nes punk ive watched all of there episodes and i just want to start playing and sorta build up a collection. Yes its obvious to do that i would just buy a system and buy games and end of story.

HOWEVER just want YOUR input on what you did to get started and how your guyses collections came about. feel free to fill this with stories and tips etc. oh id rather not do virtual console so dont even. but if your gunna try and be an a$$ GO SOMEWHERE.

If I had the money I'd invest in the NES. I used to own one up until I was a teenager in the early 2000s.(mom says it mysteriously vanished.ppfft, what a load of BS) I had about a dozen games. Metroid, SMB3, Adventures of Bayou Billy to name a few. You really can't go wrong with starting with the NES. Not sure what current market values are for starting up a NES collection, but I'd set a budget of 500 bucks and see what you can get for that.

I think the NES itself is only like 50 bucks normally. The games though, they can get really expensive. Personally I'd go with SNES. Probably not much better price wise, but so many of my favorite games are on that system. Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, and A Link to the Past to name a few.

yeah i was also thinking about getting a retron 5 watched alot of reviews and it would be a quick startup for a few systems lol i basically posted this for social reasons, i like reading other gamers stories and opionions haha. but yeah collecting can get expensive but hey what do ya do?
I see alot of people get there stuff from flea markets and swap meets so i cant wait for summer to come around , i live in dumb cold minnesota so not alot of outdoor activity up here lol. thanks for your guyses input though, really apreciate it.

My tip besides flea markets and garage sales is check out your local Thrift Stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army. The nice thing about them is alot of times they don't know what they have so you can pick up games and systems pretty cheap without the fear of someone marking them up cause they think they are worth more then they are.

As for how I got into retro collecting mine I kinda cheated. I just kept alot of my systems and games that I had growing up and bought the majority of my collection in they years the stuff was available. Some systems that I own like my Dreamcast I recently bought cause I never owned one and wanted to see what all they hype was about. Others like my Magnavox Odyssey I just wanted to add to my collection.

Don't. Play current games. They're better.

As mentioned, flea markets, garage sales, pawn shops, and thrift stores can get you a decent haul sometimes. It's just consistency to check them out when you can.
If you want the easy way, there's online, and of course your old retro game stores. But for these, you're going to spend much more cheddar.
As for my games, I have kept most of them throughout the stages of life. The only Nintendo console I didn't own was the SNES, so I had to buy that a few years back.

I'd look for retro game collections. If you have a PS3 (or 360), then definitally get the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collecion. It has more than 40 games (including classics like Shinobi 3, the Sonics, and the Streets of Rage games, and only costs about about $20. The games are in HD and have save points for whenever and however many you like . If you don't have one of those consoles, and enough of the games on the collection appeal to you, then it might be worth getting one of the consoles for it considering how much all the games would cost on the E-shop or to buy in their original condition and the improvemnts. Not to mention it would open a new libary of games for you to play.
There's also a complete list of the games on the top review at Gamestop.com. I don't think it inlcudes the arcade games you unlock though.

Ah, a man (or woman?) of taste. Too many people are obsessed with re-releases/ports. I might suggest an SNES because you can get them for a reasonable price. The biggest problem with that though is that most of the best games go for hefty sums on SNES (the reason why so many people--myself included--are switching to VC for normal gameplay aside from collecting).

Other than that I'd definitely suggest keeping an eye out at yard sales and thrift stores if you ever drop by any of those no matter what system you go for. You'll be surprised what you can pick up. My brother snagged a Genesis with 10+ games for about $30 at a yard sale.

I suggest getting the original console too if you really want that nostalgic and a more authentic feeling.

@Jaz007: None of the games in the Ultimate Genesis Collection are in HD, it just says that on the box. All games are in original Genesis resolution and can use a little (useless) upscaling like any decent emulator.

Instead of a Retron 5, I'd STRONGLY recommend getting the original consoles. Trust me, they are far more reliable, are not built with nes-on-a-chip, and will last you a lot longer. I have a SNES to prove it. Sure it's more costly, but it WILL pay off, I promise. Also I started with the Gamecube and then the SNES and later an N64 and after that an NES.
