ok, so i am not gonna be much help here considering i played this game when i was 7 or 8 and am now 27. i know its an rpg. the only thing i remember about the game itself is somewhere, nearish the beginning of the game, you go through a mountain town that is basically a side-scrolling area. there are doors into areas in the mountain. inside one of the doors is a wizard type person that you have to fight and he has four "elemental crystals" fighting with/for him. the usual elementals too, earth fire wind and water. i know this is a longshot and VERY vague but it has been bothering me for a LONG time. help computer??!

The only SNES RPG I remember with side-scrolling is Super Ninja Boy.

Elemental crystals? Side-scrolling? .-.
The only thing that I can seem to think of is super mario RPG.
In monstro town, there are several doors, and it's a mountain, and in one of the door you can fight the secret boss; Culex, who has help from elemental crystals. Or maybe you're talking about something that isn't super mario RPG, it doesn't really have side scrolling.

def not super mario rpg. its more side scroll-esque. but only for that mountain town. i mean that it switches from a 3-D playable area to one where it just moves side to side, and up and down(via ladders). i know this is a long-shot, its driving me crazy! haha

not super ninja boy either (although its a great one). its a turn based fighting rpg. its not one of the final fantasy's either. the graphics and gameplay are very similar though. i am pretty sure that its not a dragon warrior title either.

stanktopus

no sir. all the fighting was turn based. but seriously though, WHY DID I NEVER PLAY THAT ONE!?!?! that looks fun as crap!

stanktopus

@stanktopus: Are you SURE it isn't SMRPG? ...there aren't many games that I can think of where a boss fights you accompanied by crystals. I'll keep looking in the meantime though.

What is the meaning of life? That's so easy, the answer is TETRIS.

stanktopus

yeah, i am sure. i know if i saw a picture of it, it would click immediately. also, i just finished playing SM:RPG again. love that one.

thought about it more. the battle is definitely similar to the culex battle is sm:rpg. i just remember that the graphics werent as "cartoon-y" as that. is was way more similar looking to the final fantasy series, def NOT a final fantasy though.

Was it in english or Japanese?

A side scrolling RPG? Ys?

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

stanktopus

I know you said no to Final Fantasy, but what about Mystic Quest?

not mystic quest either. and not YS..it is only "side-scrolling" in this one area that i can remember. i only mean side-scrolling in that your movement is limited to moving sideways across the screen. there is an "up" to the mountain town in that you can climb ladders or stairs (not sure which they are actually supposed to be) to different height levels. ALL THE FIGHTING IS TURN BASED!

Do you remember anything else? What the main character(s) are like? Any of the enemies? Maybe a detail on the box art or any idea what company made the game?

sadly, not so much. its been twenty years haha. also, when i had it, it was a rental. so i only had that mutha for about 3 days. i wish i remembered more, this is kind of a "wild goose chase". all i know, in one place. mountain town, fight a dude that has elemental crystals backing him up (similar to culex battle in super mario: rpg). looked final fantasy-esque. NOT MYSTIC QUEST. turn based fighting ONLY. side scroll type movement in said mountain town. i wanna say four controllable characters, although that is mostly a guess. lol, this has literally been bugging me for the past ten years minimum.

I would like to ask a couple more questions. Please answer them to the best of your knowledge.

1. How was the weather in mountains?
2. Was the side scrolling segment on top the mountain or inside one of the doors?

HistoricKombat

stanktopus

1. it was sunny as far as i remember.
2. on top of the mountain. when you went in the door, thats when you fought. VERY SIMILAR to the Culex battle in Super Mario: RPG

thanks again to everyone who has been helping so far.
