It had quite a lot of Anime based fighters. From DBZ to Naruto. Rave Master to Zatch Bell, and even One Piece and Zoids. I'm sure the PS2 had more, but mainly due to it having almost complete monopoly on japanese 3rd party support. Still, its interesting. I think the reason for this is due to the system's appeal to a younger audience.

Or it was just the "in" thing at the time. The Gamecube got plenty of the big fighting games of the time too, like SoulCalibur and Mortal Kombat. Street Fighter was pretty much on ice at the time and Tekken was a Sony exclusive until 2009.

Licensed fighting games are still going strong. They're just not popular in the west anymore, so they rarely get localized.

So Anakin kneels before Monster Mash and pledges his loyalty to the graveyard smash.

That seemed like it to me. Fighting games were the "flavor of the month" back then. FPS were just starting to come into the fold and were fairly new at the time. Also the Gamecube was a big generation gap for video game players. For alot of the older people it was the last true game system before they became media all in one boxes and thus were building on what was popular with that age group. The group that is into FPS now weren't old enough to know what they like at the time, so they built on what went worked for the them in the past.

Now times have changed and FPS is the in thing so game developers will cater to that crowd.
