Found it hidden away in a closet at my dads house of all places. I guess I had it a long time ago and just forgot. I don't think I ever played much of it. In those days RPG's were too confusing for me. I just popped it in my Snes and tried it for an hour and I'm already hooked! Now I can finally redeem myself by playing it through to the end. Then I'll know what I've been missing. Pity this game will likely never be on VC. I'm starting to see why it's so desired by many.

It's okay, but since I played Mother 3 first, everything about Earthbound just feels so.... primitive. I mean, EVERYTHING about Motehr 3 is better. The story, the gameplay, the battles, the characters, the graphics, music..... Earthbound might be a bit funnier, but I dunno, I've been playing through it and it's taking me forever because I don't really want to, but I want to beat it, because I have to so I understand the awesomeness of Mother 3 better.
Why was the second game the only one released in America? They all look really good. Seems rather unfair that Japan gets the whole trilogy but we didn't. I don't see any reason why people in the states wouldn't have enjoyed these games. Do you think they will ever give Mother 1 and 3 an official release outside of Japan? Probably not I suppose since they most likely won't even release Earthbound on VC. What a crock.

The first Mother was not released because it wasn't done translating until the SNES was about to launch. Mother 3 was released not long before the DS, too, so there was never even word that they began a translation (though if you play it, you'll find other reasons they might have passed on it).
I've got the GBA versions of all three. In Japanese. One day, when I can read the language, they shall be played. I'm reckoning sometime around Spring 2047, given current rates of language acquisition...
Haha, when Mother 3 was first announced, I convinced myself I was going to learn the language for this game. There were books I'd like to read, too, but Mother was the catalyst.
As for my progress, let's just say I was very happy when the translation patch was announced.
As appealing as the idea of self-teaching books (and games -- Slime Forest rocks) is, learning a language (especially such a difficult one) probably requires classes followed by immersion for most people (i.e. me), and probably starting at a younger age.

Even if I were to find a copy of EB in a closet, I wouldn't play it because I don't have an SNES. (And I'm not getting one - I'm still holding out for the VC release for some reason.)

There are a lot more copies of Mother 2 than there are of Earthbound. But unless you both speak Japanese and have a Super Famicom, it's unfortunately not useful. And even if you read Japanese, you'd be better off getting Mother 1 + 2 (and 3, while you're at it), which is region-free and plays on more recent consoles.
For those curious on why Earthbound isn't on the VC, try this article. It also touches on why any of the Mother game will not be released here. It would just take way too much extra work.

So ya, play Mother 3 when you're done.
Are you kidding? The only thing better about Mother 3's battle system is timed hits. Outside of battles, everything definitely feels more "modern", but EarthBound still has the advantage in a few aspects.
I like Mother 3 slightly more, but both are top-notch games, easily my two favorites. I actually find it hard to compare the two, despite how much they obviously have in common.
Earthbound is kind of abstract. There is really a lot of negative space for the player to fill in, if you follow, and the "plot" (as much of it as there is) is more of a scene-by-scene adventure that doesn't come together until it's just about over. Very unusual and experimental.
Mother 3 is very much a story told by a third party, but it's such a great one, that I don't mind. Graphics are obviously much better -- best on GBA, I'd say -- and sound quality is much improved, too. Mother 3 reuses a lot of music, but the remixes are so good that I don't hold it at fault for this, and the Love theme and other new material is great.
The only disappointment for me, musically, was the band. The band's music wasn't half as good as the Runaway Five's or even Venus's. Probably the weakest songs on the soundtrack, actually, I thought.
