Okay, not help in the way you think. I need help... to get interested in it. To be honest, the game is boring me. However, I see it in the top ten in dozens upon dozens of "Best Games Ever" lists, so I really want to get into it.

What's amazing about the game, beyond the huge open world? Give me reasons to continue playing it.

Oh, and while I'm at it, is there a quick way to climb up those huge abysses?

Honestly, I don't know that it would really impress people today like it did when it was release. When I play it now, I can't help but think how easy it is once you know where all the hidden passages are. If exploring Zebes isn't enough for you, I don't know what we can say to make you like it.

I'm not sure what "abysses" you're talking about. Someone else complained recently about falling down a lot, but I've never had that problem before. I guess I am just awesome.

I've played it some more, and am enjoying it now. I have a problem with the bosses, though. Lots of them just kind of walk at you until they hit you, and there's no way to jump over them. Any tips?

The "abysses" I'm referring to are deep chasms with lots of platforms that take a tedious amount of time to climb up. I saw some vids of Metroid Fusion where you could grab ledges and swing up really fast - d'no if Super Metroid has anything like that.

Oh, and I'm having fun finding hidden passages.

You can wall jump, but you can't ledge grab. Wall jumping is a bit tricky, and not necessary. I never minded the chasms though. They're worse in the first two Metroids.

The bosses just need to be shot in the mouth and they'll take a step back, but I can only think of two with this behavior, Kraid (giant green guy), and the red boss in Norfair that has the long mouth and long arm. Both are really easy if you just shoot missile after missile into their mouthes. They don't like that.

What boss specifically are you at?

Oh, okay sweet. I beat the first two or three bosses. Now I'm at a Poison Ivy Monster Wannabe in Brinstar, that basically just hovers around shooting plants in the air. I guess I'm supposed to shoot it's mouth when it opens, though I died before I could figure out how to hit it. Aiming at an angle doesn't work, and I couldn't get the knack of how to shoot it while jumping.

Just give into it. Play it with the lights off and the sound up. This game has great sound effects even for today and the enemy and character design is flawless.

Maybe you just don't care for well thought out, masterfully crafted interactive experiences.

Oh, that's probably the easiest of them all. Just morph into the ball and sit in a corner. When he opens, pop out, shoot him with a missile (or super missile), then go back to waiting. I seem to remember there being a spot where you'll never get hit while in a ball or even just kneeling.

@nice_shirt: Thanks, I will.

@Adam: Yeah, already found that spot (before posting). I'll give it another go later tonight.

Booya, I beat it! Now I'm descending deeper into Zebes, and there are fire room traps all over the place. Got the high jump and charge shot now. I'm really starting to enjoy this.

Glad you're starting to like it, Super Pixel Man. Also, your avatar keeps getting awesomer.

Ridley is one of the tougher bosses, which is odd since he is by far the easiest boss in the original (though there are only three).

@Adam: Haha thanks. :) I thought the first boss in Super Metroid is Ridley. Is there a final showdown or something?

@longtimegamer: Yes you do.

Well, as you must have noticed, you don't defeat Ridley at the beginning, and he still has the Metroid, so it isn't supposed to be a surprise that you'll fight him again. In the original you could fight Kraid or Ridley first, but in Super unless you do some tricky sequence breaking, you're supposed to fight him as one of the very last bosses.

Glad to hear you're getting into the experience some more. Its all about atmosphere and exploration with this game so as long as that appeals to you, then everything else will follow.

I wonder if you were talking about the Chozo statue earlier, the one you fight right after you get the Bomb power-up. He walks towards you and yes, you can't jump over him. To avoid him just roll into a ball and roll under him. His legs won't damage you.
