Topic: How Frequently Do You Play Retro Games?

If Gamecube counts...quite often. I don't play much NES anymore, but I do pop in a SNES game every now and then. A couple weeks ago I was playing Killer Instinct with my roommate. My N64 also gets a good deal of use, mostly with Perfect Dark or Ocarina of Time

While I've always dabbled with retro in the past while still playing the current titles recently I've been finding myself almost only playing retro games or 'new retro games'.
Thanks to the VC and XBLA and 3DSVC retro games are now easily accessible without having to have lots of different systems hooked up and I am making the most of it.
Having a family means I don't have the time to invest in many current gen games to make much progress and find that cut scenes (unskippable ones are the worst!! grrrrrrr),loading times and pointless fetch quests are eating up into my gameplay time far too much.
I love the instantaneous visceral thrill that comes with retro games and the reflexes involved are more attractive to me these days than the interactive movies of today.
I'm currently playing Radiant SilverGun and Galaga Legions DX (XBLA) The ultimate MegaDrive collection (XB) and Fantasy Zone and am still trying to beat the bloody last level on Soldier Blade on VC!.Oh and of course the Ambassador games on 3DS. (Mainly Yoshi,Golf and SMB).
So yeah I love retro but then a master system was my first console so I've grown up with these games so the hefty dose of nostalgia that it provides is also probably part of the appeal or a mid-life crisis as my missus puts it
Anyone who loves retro games should visit this site http://www.meanmachinesmag.co.uk/. It was my favourite magazine as a young un' and they have some great reviews and features in there!!
Although I still get caught up in the hype of newer games I've started to question my purchases more. I haven't bought Xenoblade for example as I couldn't invest the time required.
Anyway I'm rambling...........Retro FTW!!!

What's this bit for again?

Heck, I spent more time on my gamecube Animal Crossing playing Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, and Punch-Out than actually playing the main game,

Had it but didn't play it much. Not a fan of puzzle games.

I don't always give myself signatures, but when I do, you just read it.

Oh, all the time.
I just finished playing VB Wario Land, which does qualify as retro since the VB was released in '95.

I would like to play more but as I grow older physically, though not necessarily mentally, time for playing video games is harder to come by. I spend way more time on Nintendo Life then actually playing Nintendo due to work.

thats kinda me.
and all i play is 8 bit, 16 bit and retro PS1 and PS2 games that extend some sort of retro compilation: like Mega Man 8 or Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 or Taito Legends 2. it took awhile to give in to the PS games cuz i like 8 and 16 bit.
when i worked in the r zone at toys r us, id look away in disgust at the new generation of games and still do to this day.
if it aint pixelation im hatin'
im an old school assbag.

You know, I always thought you were an "old school assbag" just never said anything. Love it, "if it aint pixelation im hatin'" I and kinda agree with that Ha! I still play some new games though because when I can only squeeze the cheese with a 15 minute gaming session at least the new games will save my progress. The newer games that I am interested mainly in are a continuation of a series like for example Metroid.

I always tend to spend alot more time with the classic stuff. As I get older they are getting harder to play though.
I don't have the reflexes or patience I used to for those hardcore retro games.
Newer games are neat and all but I'm a really big fan of 2-D sprites. They have a charm that's timeless.
I still try to stay informed about which newer games are the hottest around so I don't miss out on anything cool.
Like the upcoming Skyward sword for Example

Oh dude, I hooooppppeeeee my reflexes don’t go all Link79 on me and go out anytime soon , there are too many fantastic NES and SNES games I got to play!

Truthfully the only new games that I seem to play as of late are remakes of older titles like StarFox 64 3D. I tend to play a few newer games like Phoenix Wright and Pokemon White but most of the time I play older games like SML2 or Kirby's Dreamland on my 3DS. I also tend to play alot more of the VC game or the Super Mario All Stars collection on my Wii than I play newer Wii games.

Most of the time when I do play a newer gen game its with my son like the Smackdown VS Raw games or the Lego series of games. Most of the newer games like Batman Arkham Asylum for example I play through once to see the story than they just sit on my shelf. For some reason I just cant play the newer games over and over again like I can older gen games like the ones on the NES or SNES for example. One play through is enough for me. Does anyone else have that problem with the new gen games?

I played through Batman once and haven’t touched it since. I thought it was good and had fun with it but still new games I don’t have any desire either to play through again and online multiplayer is not for me. I’m certainly no trophy whore, that is for sure! So Tasuki, you fantastic dad you, how does your son like the classics vs. the current games?

Well said regarding the “instantaneous visceral thrill that comes with retro games.” So true. I used to enjoy cut scenes but not so much anymore. Ninja Gaiden with slick cut scenes will always be the best!
I will have to look into that site you mentioned, been looking for some good retro sites for a little while now.
I don’t spend much on new games nowadays, I wait for them to drop in price and a am lot more selective. I would rather spend $60.00 on a complete copy of Demon’s Crest for SNES then $60 on Assassin’s Creed 5.

@Ryno: For him it all depends on the game really. He really like Kirby's Dreamland on my 3DS and other 'retro" games like River City Ransom, Final Fight, TMNT IV Turtles in Time and retro sport titles like Tecmo Bowl and NBA Jam, but at the same time he likes newer games just as much like The Sims 3, the Soul Caliber series and games like FIFA 2011. So I dont think he differentiates classic gaming vs current gaming. Sometimes when in fact a new game that is based off of an old game like GoldenEye for example he wants to play the original as much as the newer one.

Of course since he was two years old hes been playing videogames he started on a N64, a Super Nes and a Gamecube so I figure that to him they really arent retro in the sense that retro is to you and me if that makes sense.

@Tasuki: Yeah, that does make sense. Good for you starting him young and on great systems no less though. Down the road, when my kids are born I am going to make sure one of the first things they grab a hold of is a NES controller! I wish I could say that I was born with a NES controller in my hand.
