Topic: How Frequently Do You Play Retro Games?

Posts 1 to 20 of 31

Ryno

So this thread is to see how much time or the percentage of time spent gaming the Nintendo Life community spends playing the favorite (or maybe not so favorite) games of the past. Are you the type of person that plays retro games regularly or do you play an occasional title on the VC and go back to "current generation" games?

I do not play video games for a ton of hours every month, I probably average less than 10 and about 75% of it is spent playing 8 and 16 bit magic. I would like to play more but as I grow older physically, though not necessarily mentally, time for playing video games is harder to come by. I spend way more time on Nintendo Life then actually playing Nintendo due to work. But hey, discussing video games with all you cool peeps is fun. After all it sure beats being stuck in a phone booth not knowing where your headed!

I like this topic. But I hate getting trapped in phone booths.

Approximately every week I play around an average of 20 hours. 5/20 hours goes to retro gaming, for sure. I wish I could play more but that's what I've doing for the last couple years: catching up. And with the lack of money at the moment I can't really buy too many games in general. I went on a crazy addiction to purchasing rare GameCube titles for no apparent reason and now I feel guilty because I actually should've spent it on games I actually wanted. :L

thats kinda me.
and all i play is 8 bit, 16 bit and retro PS1 and PS2 games that extend some sort of retro compilation: like Mega Man 8 or Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 or Taito Legends 2. it took awhile to give in to the PS games cuz i like 8 and 16 bit.
when i worked in the r zone at toys r us, id look away in disgust at the new generation of games and still do to this day.
if it aint pixelation im hatin'

I tend to play VC games a lot on my 3DS. In fact if you were to ask me why I bought a 3DS the VC would have to be the biggest reason. I like playing old games.

Since you're giving modern day retro games a chance you should check out Scott Pilgrim vs the World: the Game. If you're a side scrolling beat'em up fan this is the ultimate experience. It's soundtrack beautifully and perfectly recreates a SNES game's music. It's only on xbox arcade and PSN though. If you ever have a chance to play it though give it a shot. I feel like I'm back in the 90's when playing it.

Yes. A thousand times yes. Everyone play this game if you haven't already. And if you have already, play it again. And again. And again.

Personally, i play retro games constantly, particularly if you include in the retro-remakes and retro-style games (like Scott Pilgrim and the new Bloodrayne) that have been popping up everywhere in the past few years. I've found that, especially lately, there's not a tremendous amount of "new" games that really interest me — or at least interest me enough to get $60 out of me (/me looks at list of recent 360 releases that i'd buy if they were cheaper, but instead am perfectly happy to wait until used/bargain bin/mark-down pricing).

Add a couple hundred more yeses on top of that.

I don't play much of anything besides retro games. Just tonight I've started playing Chrono Trigger for the first time.

I always tend to spend alot more time with the classic stuff. As I get older they are getting harder to play though.
I don't have the reflexes or patience I used to for those hardcore retro games.
Newer games are neat and all but I'm a really big fan of 2-D sprites. They have a charm that's timeless.
I still try to stay informed about which newer games are the hottest around so I don't miss out on anything cool.
Like the upcoming Skyward sword for Example

Truthfully the only new games that I seem to play as of late are remakes of older titles like StarFox 64 3D. I tend to play a few newer games like Phoenix Wright and Pokemon White but most of the time I play older games like SML2 or Kirby's Dreamland on my 3DS. I also tend to play alot more of the VC game or the Super Mario All Stars collection on my Wii than I play newer Wii games.

Most of the time when I do play a newer gen game its with my son like the Smackdown VS Raw games or the Lego series of games. Most of the newer games like Batman Arkham Asylum for example I play through once to see the story than they just sit on my shelf. For some reason I just cant play the newer games over and over again like I can older gen games like the ones on the NES or SNES for example. One play through is enough for me. Does anyone else have that problem with the new gen games?

I use my Virtual Console on my Wii far more than I do the new Wii games. Not because I don;t like what the Wii has to offer, but I really really do enjoy retro games. Heck, I spent more time on my gamecube Animal Crossing playing Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, and Punch-Out than actually playing the main game, and also pushed through the original Metroid that I got on Metroid Prime ( Forgot how though. My friend unlocked it for me.) One of the games I played most on my gamecube was probably Sonic Mega Collection.

I still bought the VC releases of all those games, though. It's just much more convenient to browse the SD card for all my games in one spot than to pop in another disc and browse yet another menu.

tl;dr

I play retro games so much, every day, all the time.

I'm only playing retro games right now, aside from Minecraft en Metroid Prime 3.

Over 80% of my time is playing retro games and 20% playing modern games. That is a rough estimate.
