Hi, Don't know if any one has seen this but BLAZE (the guys who made the recent handheld mega drive) have released a new mega drive (in the UK at least) with 15 games built in and two joypads. It will play all old cartridges including imports and you can also use your old joypads. Its available from HMV for £34.99 sounds like a good deal to me.What do you guys and gals think of it?
Well it looks pretty official and HMV are a reputable company.Check out their website to see more of it.Thier handheld version got great reviews.sorry i don't know how to make a link to the website. If you google HMV + megadrive you'll find it.
My brother has one and it is a pile of crap. Where to begin:
It only uses sound from one speaker (the left I think) and the music sounds nothing like the original.
The graphics don't look as anywhere near as good as the original. It looked like the graphics had been converted to JPEG format.
The only use of the NTSC/PAL switch is to bypass the security in some games (like Streets of Rage 2). It doesn't change the TV settings.
The Europe one runs all the emulated and cartridge games in PAL50 while the Japan and US run emulated and cartridge games in NTSC.
The controllers, while 6 buttons, feel like 3rd party products (although by brother liked them). You can use original controllers know.
The emulator games played fine but the quality wasn't great.
With the cartridge games me and brother tried, Sonic and Knuckles and Sonic 3 worked but sound wasn't great. Sonic 2 with Sonic and Knuckles worked but Sonic 3 and Knuckles would just play Sonic and Knuckles instead (to be fair, it might be due to the Sonic 3 cartridge and I've let to try it on a real Mega Drive). The Avengers actually played fine but with very raspy voices. Lemmings on the other hand made the graphics eye burning and were glitchy.
Basically don't buy this. Get a real Mega Drive and get it modded to play imports or just use a emulator or stick with the Virtual Console.
I wonder if it can play 32X games or if you can insert a 32X on the top & play the games from there? Also, can you attach a Sega CD unit?
It can't because an extra lead is required to connect from the 32X to the Mega Drive (despite the fact it is already connected to the Mega Drive's slot <_<). The BLAZE Mega Drive doesn't have that. Also the thing is so small there is no way it can attach a MEGA CD to one and it doesn't have the required connectors.
