Topic: Going for a complete Black Box collection...

So after years of cherry picking my retro collections and with the market prices the way they are, I have most things I want for my systems (namely JRPGs) which has left me with the conundrum of 'What do I buy next?'

Naturally, I decided to limit myself to the two Nintendo systems I love but have neglected the most, the NES and Gameboy! While I'm not being picky at all with my Gameboy collection, due to Denmark being pretty rich in grey rectangular cartridges, I've decided to set my sights on the rather obvious and seemingly expensive task of getting all of the Black Box games for the NES.

Does anyone have any tips? I.E.

  • Any rough price estimation of how much these carts go for CIB (I'm looking at you Devil World...) A
  • Are there any nice ways of display NES boxes? Is there anything on the market that's a box frame I can put them in, similar to the frames you can get for LP's. After all, it'd make a lovely display!
  • Is this a completely stupid idea? I know a lot of people go for these CIB and the prices are high for (arguably) sub-par and common games.

Also worth noting I'm going for PAL A, as adorable as those PAL B small black boxes are (those illustrations!), I'm a true brit, so I'm used to the duo-language packaging

Well if your just doing pal A, devil world won't be a problem because it's only pal B and not pal A, but if you want to get it anyways just so you have a price point the last cart only one I saw on ebay was $170 so I imagine cib will probably be in the 3-500 dollar range.

Oh Man... Alright, I'll give it a miss for the sake of my wallet... My decision to go PAL A looks like it's doing me a favor haha!

And Cheers @RancidVomit86, I'll check them out!

The more valuable black box games are probably the less popular like Cluclu Land and Volleyball.

But I can only imagine trying for a PAL set (A, B, whatever) is going to be even harder than NTSC as I hear that was pretty much Sega territory (not sure how it compares to the American Master System. You might have a hard time finding people who heard of that console back in the day here. )
I'm assuming boxed will still have quite a collectible valuable even if the PAL format seems to be pretty much despised among gamers.

I'm assuming you're going for Euro PAL and going to save yourself the trouble of trying to find the HK-exclusive "Mah Jong". (while the Famicom version is probably dirt-common, the NES version is almost unheard of)

Haah yup, as I think the only copies of that cart are me lurking on these forums, I think it's safe to say I'm going to give it a miss I have a boxed China Megaman II for the Gameboy, so that's as close to that market as I dare to tread!

To be honest, I'd considered making it an NTSC collection, only my track record with modded NES' isn't so great, and I can get PAL A/B consoles quite easily
