If the NDS had failed, NIntendo always had an backup plan to bring out GB3D. Gameboy 3d was basically going to the Gameboy Carts, but in the form of the Gameboy.
Honestly the GBA is the most powerful 2d machine not including an bigger screen, A proper Mode 7, and lack of sound support including visuals. Also these games had the most smallest resolution in the history of popular culture right now. Which shows how great it was.
The NDS was more then an portable N64 but even better. Nintendo basically went back to Game and Watch for this one. Which is why it wins.
When we are talking about games, I vote for the GBA because most of the NDS games are rehash, or new-age ideas. Or even old age ideas.
I think I slightly prefer the Game Boy Advance. Harkens back more to that SNES, 16-bit vibe, and I love all the great Mario Kart, Metroid, Zelda, and F-Zero games. DS probably has more overall variety, and a ton of strong games in its own right, but I like the style and vibe of the GBA stuff more.

The "nineties" best handheld will always be the GBC. It had an normal GB slot; allowed for wireless transfers between infared devices. Had an celluar phone wireless gameplay for pokemon ( Japan ). Also when they made the back-lite light it just completed everything.
The GBA is just an more powerful Neo-Geo pocket color. Which also went up against the GBC. Then was the Wonder Swan II which went up against the GBA.
