I remember getting really frustrated with the shadow Link fight in Zelda II, but I eventually did it. I bought it for the VC and I am not sure if I'm going to go back to it as the last temple is a pain.
The game I regret not finishing was Majora's Mask. Maybe I will get the remake if they do it, but not sure.
I can't seem to sit down to finish Sin & Punishment: Star Successor. I like the game, but there's always something else I want to play more.
As a kid, most games I got, I beat. The caveat for some was having a bit of technical help. I did have the game genie, but I'm not talking about that. It was the NES Advantage. I loved that controller. There is no way I would have gotten through 1943, Fester's Quest, or other similar shooters without the turbo.
Paladin's Quest. Maybe I haven't COMPLETELY given up. But I have awhile ago settled that my cart is "cursed". When I try to play, I would experience issues like the console randomly cutting power. Maybe I'll have to (usestwmtxim) to finish it.
The other thing about that game is the translation. While Enix really went above the technical standards to give the NES Dragon Quests a good menu localization (some might argue whether the OLD-ENGLISCH text is good), with full menus, Paladin's Quest is maybe the worst menu localization I've seen. It really is beginner-ROM-hack bad. Almost unreadable.
I know this might be the only Enix America localization that published by Enix in Japan, so maybe it's just that they could get access to the source code or original developers to fix it. Too bad as it seems like a good game otherwise.
And Willow for the NES is another "cursed" game I have. Each time I would try to play I'd get the old NES freeze, or my controller would decide to only let one direction work. Like PQ, probably also have to solve that with FORBIDDEN.
Project X Zone sticks out to me. I just really lost interest as the chapters became more bloated with enemies and the story didn't seem to go anywhere. And this was AFTER I put over 20 hours in!
Graphics come after gameplay. Every time. It takes more than being pretty to be a good game.
@KingMike - ah, Paladin's Quest. My #6 Ninty 16-bit game I'm most hesitant to experience, after Landstalker 2 (no I'm not uttering that real pejorative title), Ganbare Goemon 2, Mystic Ark, Secret of the Stars, and SOS (my #1 in this category; wow, never thought I'd reference this Top 13 from my blog entry two months back, but here you go). I hear that the sequel Lennus II is superior, though I hear that the music in the first one is really good.
after Landstalker 2 (no I'm not uttering that real pejorative title),
The one with the lady?
And is better if you know one of the main characters is ACTUALLY named a (possible? mistranslation of) Cooks.
(that third letter different)
@KingMike - ............................ @Magrane - I'm sure you'll be able to beat all those games someday (well, I don't hold much hope for Mega Man VII; but I'm more than positive that you can beat the rest).
@Ryno - you know what's too bad about Lagoon? The fact that for Western gamers it was the closest to come to a proper Ys game on the SNES while Japanese gamers got the actual proper Ys game Ys IV: Mask of the Sun for the Super Famicom (it's too bad that one never came out in the West, as it's actually really good; I am upset that it's no longer the "canon" fourth entry in the series: now it's Ys: Memories of Celceta for the PlayStation Vita, which Nihon Falcom actually worked on while the SFC game was done by Tonkin House, who ported Ys III: Wanderers from Ys to the SFC/SNES).

To each their own
I've heard the original version of Lagoon, for the Sharp X68000 computer, was much better and was a Ys clone. But we'll probably never know for sure.
I thought the SFC game was Falcom's (and the PCE was a separate game by Hudson).
There was supposed to be a third game for the Mega Drive, but I guess being the last-place console in Japan it was the one that got cut when they needed to scale down probably.
I think the SFC game was the game the PS2 port was based on? But I don't know because the PS2 versions of Ys 3-5 are too expensive (and Japanese-exclusive), last I checked.
I did play the PS2 version of Ys 6. That was fun game but I stopped after I quit for awhile and forgot everything. Probably got annoyed trying to do the dash-jump in one of the bonus dungeons. The timing on that thing is ridiculous (but people told me the JP-only PC version is even worse). It's like push Square and X at nearly but not exactly the same time.
I nearly beat Lagoon when I rented it once, made it to the final bosses. Probably a large time of that though, was spent just standing around waiting for auto-heal.
And it was only years later I went for the Shiny Ball to see if it was worth the effort.
I saw no effect. It's supposed to raise HP/MP auto-heal rate.
(if you don't know, I believe you can only buy it in the second town. It costs 10,000 Gold. I get there with about 1,000. So I need to get the other 9k by farming enemies that drop 3-5 Gold each. By my estimate, that took about five hours of killing spiders. At least I was up from probably level 5 to like level 22 after, out of a maximum 35.
And no, the game does not let you go back later.)
For some reason I actually have both a loose SNES Lagoon and a CIB SFC copy. I can't remember why I bought the JP version if it was supposed to be better or anything though.
Zelda II
Battletoads
Punch-Out
Just about any NES game
Completing the National Pokedex in Pokemon
The Perfect Run in Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Star #242)
My list would be pretty similar to this, except I did finish The Perfect Run. Completing the National Pokedex just sounds crazy. I have around 450 or so Pokemon and that took me forever T_T.
Bravely Default. I was so excited for this game... loved the demo even. Then I went, played it, and literaly put it from boredom down every other hour. It is just tedious in every way that annoys me, and the story is not even interesting. I keep trying after I beat a boss, but then I get to the next one, die terribly, and give up again. Maybe someday I'll have tried enough times to beat it... but that would be torture.
