Topic: GameCube Controller on N64

I'm looking to buy a US Nintendo 64 sometime In the future (because of lack of games, rumble, and 60hz on the VC), but the problem is, I HATE the controller. It's hard to hold, the stick gets loose quickly, and it doesn't have rumble unless you add more weight to it. Does anyone know of any nice little converters out there that will allow me to use my trusty GameCube controllers in the world of 64-bit entertainment?

OR, is there at least a way to open the controller up and tighten that damn control stick whenever it gets loose?

@Big A2 Apparently no you cant... but the n64 controller is a great controller and the joystick is comfortable and sure you do have to hold it depending on which game played but not big of a problem and also the n64 has a huge library of great classics For example Super Mario 64, Star fox 64, and many many others as well.

Cocky Little Freaks!! that never gets old........

The analog sticks gets loose in gamecube controllers too easily, just like with N64 pad. After a year of playing Super Smash Bros Melee i already had to buy a new GC controller. It suffered the same fate later. This is why Wiis Classic controller is the best pad from Nintendo, since it's still in the same condition as it was when i bought it at 2007. Same goes for Pro too, i guess.

Speaking as someone who's opened up several N64 controllers in his time (for cleaning), I can tell you that, no, there is no way to tighten the control stick on an N64 controller. However, if you happen to have a few laying around (and favor one more than the rest), you can swap out the sticks easily...

My suggestion, though, would be to procure an N64 Super Pad—which I own two of—and can safely say are the best N64 controllers out there, greatly surpassing Nintendo's own. The oldest one I own dates back at least 7 years, and the control stick still remains as tight as the day I bought it off a friend of mine. Plus, it's shaped similarly to the GC controller, with no third handle...

We had an N64 Super Pad back in college. Whenever we played Goldeneye, the loser from the previous round would be forced to use it as it was the "crappy-3rd-party" controller. But whenever I think about it I realise that it DOES look like a Gamecube pad... I think they were made by either Nyko or MadCatz.

You havn't seen BAD BOYS 2 ???!!

I've only seen one of those once when I went over to a friend's house, and another friend brought one over.
Except, theirs was missing the top of the analog stick, making it even more of a punishment to use (having to push the side of the stick).

Sadly since the N64 came out before the Gamecube I dont think theres a way to use the Gamecube controller on the N64.

There might be some import piece you can buy like I have seen adapters that will let you use a PS controller on a GC and an Xbox but I am not sure if there is one out there for the N64. Other than that the only thing I can suggest is get use to the N64.

I've had 4 Cube controllers since 2002-03, and I've never had any issues with them. They aren't exactly as strong as the day I bought them, obviously, but it's nothing compared to my friend’s N64 controller.

The Super Pad 64 looks like it's even more awkward to hold. Never mind that the D-Pad is where the control stick should be, but the left handle looks almost twice as big as the right handle!

So... anyone know where you can get replacement control sticks for N64? The only one I can see on eBay is 2 for $17! I've heard you can ones with metal components that will make your stick indestructible, but apparently they're expensive. Someone needs to make a decent third party N64 controller....

I have never had a decent third party controller for any system.

Instead of replacing the stick why dont you just pick up a new controller for like 20 bucks?

Honestly as I said before with as old as the N64 is I doubt anyone is going to make a controller for it. You might as well just get use to it. It actually really isnt that bad of a controller.

Yeah, there are some 3rd party controllers that are closer in shape/design to the later compact 'Cube design. I had one back in colege (don't recall who made it) that was pretty good until we spilled some beer and bong water on it during a heated GoldenEye session. Never worked right after that, for obvious reasons.

The Shpydarloggery
She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

The only major problems I've had are all with 3rd party GC controllers. My first party ones, most of which I've had for many years, are all just fine except for a couple where the analog stick pad has worn off, which isn't too back except in some games like Mario Kart.

There is also the Hori N64 controller... which looks quite a bit like the Cube pad. Only sold in Japan. Given it came out in 2000, then I suspect Hori must have been privy to some of Nintendo's designs at the time. Certainly the analog stick part is exactly the same one that Nintendo used on the Cube...

That doesn't seem so quick... But wow, thanks. That site has everything. Opening stuff up can be a scary exercise through... I have the tendency to make things worse while I'm trying to fix them.

I've seen N64 control sticks that are so loose they've fallen to the bottom of the little hole they live in. Would greasing things up fix even that?

Rob_mc_1

It's more the Spring that is the Issue. It needs to be stretched. I've done that myself and it makes it better. The grease is to reduce friction. that powder in the joystick is the bottom of the joystick getting thinner. The grease is more preventative and is recommended but I have done it with out. It can take about 20 minutes once your use to it.

After reading the "Quick Fix," I actually tried to fix my bad N64 controller (you know, the one nobody wants to get stuck with). The shaft was fine (looks a Lot like F.L.U.D.D. IMO), it was the black pieces attached to it which were the problem.

Word of advice: Don't use the tape method that so many on the web recommend. It gums up the controller and can limit how far you can tilt the stick. Use the superglue + paper method instead to rebuild the worn parts!

Also, the white powder is actually dried lubricant. Blow it out and add some more when you're done. Just don't replace it with WD40, I've heard it will eat plastic.

Good to know. I assumed it was the friction of the stick. I have had sticks that were worn as well. That's why I assumed it was the stick.

I know the the N64 joystick wares out fast but I do think it is the best design for self maintenance.
