Topic: GameCube a Flop?

There were a lot of good GCN games... yet it was classified as a flop. I knew it didn't sell well, but the controller had a great design, and the (original) Wii still has GCN controller points. Do you personally like the GameCube?

Genesis does what Ninten-don't, but when you're playing Nintendo, you're playing with power. When you're playing SNES, you're playing with super power. When you're playing with Game Boy, you're playing with portable power, but with Sega: no power.

The Gamecube didn't sell that well, but when I think of a failure, systems like the Jaguar, 3DO, and CDi come to my mind before the N64, Gamecube, Xbox, or PSP (outside of Japan) do.

The Gamecube was Nintendo's least second least (After the Virtual Boy) successful system, but it was by no means a flop, selling just slightly less than the original Xbox (22 million for the GCN, 24 for the Box), and accumulating a library complete with some of the most acclaimed games ever made.

When looking for "flops", these are the sort of game systems that fit the bill

Personally, I prefer the 'Cube to the PS2 and most definitely the Xbox (Though I would say, more objectively, the PS2 is the best of the 3)

Geez. I had no clue GCN was basically on par sales wise with Xbox.
I wouldn't have considered it a flop content wise. It had most the multiplats, and Nintendo's 1st party lineup and other exclusives were top notch.
I wasn't really into Halo and PS2 didn't look so hot graphically, but I did play God of War 1 & 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3.
The GCN just had more exclusive games I was familiar with, and still had alot of multiplats, so that's the only console I owned that gen.

I probably would have gotten into Xbox if I would have had any clue about Xbox Live, though. No console or PC could compare, IMO.

I never consider it a flop. That gen I was into PS2 alot more mainly cause my friends were especially with games like GTA Vice City and the Smackdown VS Raw series, but I did have a Gamecube as well. I honestly thought that some of the games like Soul Caliber II were better on the Cube than the PS or the Xbox. I also liked the Day of Reckoning games more then the Smackdown VS Raw games too. I think the main reason it didnt sell well is because alot of third part games like Final Fantasy and GTA didnt make their way to the GC. Also the fact that the GC didnt have DVD playback hurt it as well. But for a game system I think it was pretty good.

I dont think gamecube was a flop heck they still play melee at video game tournaments. But i was more of a ps2 guy becuase of the great exclusives: jak and daxter, ratchet and clank, and killzone

I personally think the GameCube is one of the most underrated consoles ever! So many great games, one of the most comfortable controllers ever, etc..

Oh yeah, that's right. Don't know how I forgot about that.

Gamecube was not a flop.. it finished in a close third yes.. but if Gamecube was a flop then by all rights and purposes so was XBOX.. the PS2 ran away with that generation.. The Gamecube had a lot of great games and a decent amount of third party support... it had some of the best exclusives of the generation... the only reason I had a PS2 over the Cube.. was FF and Persona.. series... and frankly FF I found terribly disappointing... (Persona was awesome though) and despite all the hype around Kingdom Hearts.. I am still trying to figure out why everyone loves it so much.. (It's good.. but not hardly that good)

It was a flop by Nintendo's standards for home consoles. They still talk of it as having a small install base. I think it was felt most in Japan. The feeling was probably exacerbated by it selling less than the N64 which also didnt meet sales expectations.
P.S. The 3DS is about to eclipse the N64

I don't think it was a flop at all. A "flop" generally means that the product failed and was discontinued (too soon, which the GC was not)

Truly a gold (leaf?) page from Nintendo's history; every major 1st party release was poignant and memorable.
SSB Melee, Windwaker, Pikmin, Animal Crossing...

Well I love the Gamecube games through my Wii. The controller really is a beauty. The colors, the comfort, those big trigger buttons, the placement of everything.

I love the Cube now I can look back on it and its exclusives, but as a kid, when I could have only had one console, I think I would have hated being a cube owner. I had a Saturn and a dreamcast and they're in the same boat. Great exclusives, but it missed out on so many of the big games at the time.

Not sure why PSP is getting thrown in with the Cube and Xbox on the disappointing sales category. It sold more than the NES, SNES, N64 and GameCube.

The PS2 is my favourite console of the era (if not all time) but I have very fond memories of the Gamecube. It may have been a sales disappointment but it had some brilliant games and was surprisingly powerful. I think its library is like the console itself - small but of very high quality. An awesome little machine.
