Shantae is pretty good too, but it's a bit too rare nowadays.

The first 12mos of the system came with some NIntendo general branded titles and they're fun, stuff like Alleyway, Baseball, Radar Mission, Solar Striker and more. Before there was Kirby, HAL made a good pinball game called Revenge of the Gator. Final Fantasy Adventure is a must, it's the prequel to Secret of Mana if you like that game. Any of the 3 Castlevania games and the parody of them Kid Dracula are fantastic. Obviously stuff like the Mario Lands (1 and 2 as they have Mario) and Zelda (only Links Awakening) are good picks. Other 'NES' era spinoffs like TMNT, Gradius, Contra, and the rest from Konami or the Megamans on the GB or Megaman Xtreme(MMX1/2 mix) on GBC is a good pick. Shadowgate and the remake of the classic Wings of Fury is nice on GBC too. Kirby's Dreamland (both) are worth a grab, more so the second as the first is stupid easy and 30min short. Oh, and Takara ported/converted over a good bit of NeoGeo arcade games (Samurai Shodown, etc) and a few others not by them(Battle Arena Toshinden) are fine too.
I could go on and on, but those are a wide selection of nice things.

Totally agree that Super Mario Land 2 was too short, too easy, and had weak level design for the most part.
But the game had a lot of great features too! Graphics were gorgeous and the controls were also a big improvement over the original Super Mario Land. Each level had secrets to uncover and bonus games that could be reached with a bit of ingenuity. Best of all, the introduction of Wario was a huge turning point for the Mario series - this anti-hero now has multiple games all his own.
The only reason this game doesn't hold up well now is the lack of difficulty and the fairly straightforward level design. Compared to other platform games on the system, it still deserves to be recognized as a classic in my opinion.

I don't agree, though SML1 was pretty quickly done and short. Sure Mario Land 2 wasn't some 90 level game like the console titles, but the levels and gear you could get was varied and it had some original material like the space zone with the suit and gravity play. It really did wow me they had a black and white ver of the SNES SMW sprite going for Mario too. Honestly I though that Wario Land was the turd of the lot, and really it didn't deserve to be part of the lot as it was a lie as there was no Mario Land, it was a scam just like Super Mario World 2 isn't really mario, it's Yoshi's Island. They suckered kids and teens in the pre-internet days with scheming packaging to buy a game under false pretenses and I fell for it both times on SMW2 and SML3 and was furious as I didn't like being lied to and while Yoshi was ok, WL I thought fairly well sucked but I did finish it as I blew $30 on it.

@J.K. Glad to see i'm not alone in thinking WL sucked. And I too hated the "Super Mario" title being attached to both it and Yoshi's Island. Both shameless (but succesfull) attempts to cash-grab, regardless of whether the games were good or not.
Yeah it still makes me mad so I won't even look at Wario Land on the GB. Last 2 I did was Wario Land 4 less than a year ago and it wasn't fun with no death, and then before that was a free copy that came with a Virtual Boy I had second hand like 5+years ago. Wario just isn't that interesting.

To each their own. I found it more boring by far than either Mario game, and while it did have that little bit of pirate thing going on there it did nothing for me as DKC was out there too and did that a lot better as well.
