Topic: For all you Sega Genesis/Megadrive Mini fans...

So, as one of the people that pre-ordered the Sega Genesis Mini, I'm obviously highly curious as to how it's going to stack up in real life, especially since they managed to get the absolutely stellar M2 team on board, to take care of the emulation, which should by all rights mean that we'll at least have something solid to look forward to, if their reputation is anything to go by.

As it so happens, I was browsing YouTube today, and even though the device isn't released yet, there are some game-related channels that have already received a preview unit, so that they can show it to us and give us some idea of what to expect. So, with that in mind, and the fact that there wasn't an article about it yet, I figured it would be a good idea to post these videos here, for all of you to see and enjoy.

DISCLAIMER:

As you'll see and hear in the videos, there are still some restrictions in place, so they don't show absolutely everything, but they are more than good enough to give you a decent first impression of what to expect. So, without further ado, let's get this show on the road...

@ThanosReXXX I’ve actually cancelled my preorder. I’m a huge Mega Drive fan since 1993, but I don’t think we are going to see the shortages we had with the NES/SNES minis. As such I thought twice about paying the full £79.99 for something that may well come down in price just like the PS1 mini (which I got for under £40).

However, if this is as good quality as it is suggested (and I am not bothered about modding it or anything) then even if the price doesn’t drop I’m sure I can get one further on down the line (NES minis are really common in the wild still). M2s involvement, along with the great lineup of games pretty much means I will eventually get one, but any chance to save a few quid is welcome!

@Gamecuber Yeah, you've got a point there. I had wanted to pre-order it a couple of months ago already, but my local game shop told me that pre-orders for this weren't going nearly as fast as any of the Nintendo Minis.

Still, I didn't want to miss out on this one, so I ultimately pre-ordered it last month, if only to make sure that I could definitely get my hands on one, just in case they're going to fly off the shelves after all...

What I’d like to know is how much free space is on it for adding in extra games.

@Fandabidozi Well, at least it already has twice the number of games that the SNES Mini had, by default, so it already has that in it's favor, and then there's the emulation done by M2, which is as good as can be expected from them, as shown in the videos.

But yeah, similar hacking possibilities as with the Nintendo Minis would be nice.

On a side note: one of the videos does make a good point about that, though. M2's emulation is done on a per game basis, not emulator-wide, so if we can add more games through some kind of soft mod, then they'll probably not run as good as the original games that are on there already.

That’s a two edged sword in regards to adding extra games. I’m still in the fence. I’ve got it preordered but my SNES mini runs Mega Drive games great already.

Pssst, Sega forgot to add this to their little Sega Genesis
Untitled

I'm sure nobody will mind if I add that back in or anything.

I made Sheldon & Mr. Randoms back on Flipnote Hatena, now i'm a kangaroo mod that has a funko pop collection!

I'm not keen politics since that stuff is spooky, I'd rather watch SpongeBob over Fox News anyways!

@Fandabidozi Yeah, I've seen it run all kinds of games, but personally, I've kept both the NES and the SNES Mini pure, meaning that there's only games on there that belong with the system. I'm more of a purist in that regard, I suppose.

@SheldonRandoms I certainly wouldn't mind having that on there. Always liked Ristar.
