I just started playing After Years and it has me on an FFIV kick lately. Probably more than most any other RPG, it has received perhaps the most rereleases and retranslations, and despite having the same base story, the various incarnations have differed significantly in scripts. My personal favorites are the Chronicles "proper" and mostly uncut script and the DS remake's. They seem very polished and stick to the original spirit well. And despite being goofy and all-around awful, the SNES version still has its charms. Meanwhile, I have heard of the J2E fanslation and while it certainly was the best effort at the time, if what I heard was any indication, it diverges quite a bit from the original, changes names needlessly ("Golbeze"? Seriously?), and adds a lot of foul language, so...

Which one is your favorite script and why?

The SNES version, purely for the personal nostalgia. The DS re-translation is "better" though, and i'm not a big fan of fan-translations generally (unless that's all there is, a la Mother 3).

The Shpydarloggery
She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

It's an odd one, the official spelling is "Golbeza" (which also matches the pronunciation - there's an a at the end there). Though it's not like the other English translations didn't needlessly change it, either.

But "Golbeze" makes no sense.

Well, a name ending in the vowel A rarely sounds very intimidating...

Villains who manage to be enormously bad despite their non-intimidating name are the best villains.

Just look at Geese Howard.
