Topic: Earthbound is frustratingly difficult?

I was recently playing Earthbound (Mother 2) this game is very good from the dialogue, story, setting humour, characters, music to the nice colourful graphics but the thing about the game that frustrates me is the repetitiveness unlike other RPG games where their is a fair amount of enemies to battle against. Earthbound on the other hand doesn't have that this mostly applies to people that haven't gotten far into the game.

Enemies in Earthbound are thrown at you sometimes leaving you no time to prepare and fighting the same kind of enemies gets frustrating and boring over time such as having to sometimes battle enemies in the city, the escape option is useless since it barely works and enemies respawn at random.

But the biggest issue is the difficulty of the battle system since the enemies are mostly blocking the path or chasing after you when don't want to battle them, where i'd rather get on with the story instead of spending half an hour to an hour fighting the same kind of enemies over and over also there isn't much indication of you levelling up either like there is with Pokemon.

The reason why i say battling is difficult in an unfair way is for the amount of enemies you have to battle against sometimes having to battle enemies that multiply over and over where your more worried about your pp dropping speaking of pp's when ever i get to choose to do something such as a life up or an attack or whatever Why doesn't it apply right away? Why do i have to wait for the enemies to attack first? what's the point of me choosing what to do when i'm going to get attacked before it applies.

Overall this is my experience with Earthbound i'm going to continue playing it to progress forward. The game is still fun even with all this but i hope this isn't still present when i get more further in the game.

I downloaded Earthbound Beginnings two weeks ago and have been having a blast. I died several times at the very outset of the game but after leveling up a few times, I've had no issues with bosses or the enemies. Sure, I've died more than just those few initial times at the start - but it's an oldschool RPG that demands the gamer spend some time grinding.

Also, despite having the SNES Earthbound, I've not played it so this game is my first EB experience as well.

Keep it up! It's not the best RPG from the 8bit era that I've played, but it's still a lot of fun - at least for me. Try not to let the extreme difficulty at the start deter you from playing and completing it. (And I agree with you, some of those enemies at the beginning are going to unfairly kill you and it's basically a bunch of crap).

Earthbound Zero looks awesome though it looks more like a downgraded version of Earthbound (Mother2) but yeah i'm not giving up though grinding can be really annoying sometimes after i do beat this game i'm trying Mother 3 english translated for the GBA. @bezerker99:

lol, i totally agree

in my opinion, the first half of the game is much harder than the second. after getting through the gold mine, the game starts getting a lot easier. if you're having trouble later in the game, you might be under leveled. just keep going through the game and eventually, the difficulty will start to go down.

For early players the Sprouts and and those purple guys in Happy Happy town are pretty much the worst.@yesmanjr:

I don't disagree with a lot of your issues. In fact, I probably would have packed it in before long had I not discovered an exploit during my first playthrough to make navigating the overworld less of a drag. Whenever you see a daunting group of enemies or even one that's not worth your time, go slightly off screen from where they are and you can abuse how they spawn. It won't work 100% of the time (it depends on your surroundings etc.), but using that trick I got through segments cited as the hardest in the game (such as that desert cave) either near-effortlessly or at least without dying. I fought non-bosses largely on my own terms and didn't need to do much grinding besides getting level 1 characters up to snuff on occasion. Grinding never hurts, though.

Learn how to screen scroll and carry plenty of bottle rockets. Outside of the beginning and the Deapartment Store this game is not that hard. This game doesn't punish you for dieing really as it just take your money which you should be keeping in the ATM anyway.

Haven't gotten that far in Earthbound (on my way to Fourside), but I only found the absolute beginning of the game truly difficult. After I discovered the beauty of Teddy Bears, the beginning became much more manageable.

I own a PS1, GBA, GBA SP, Wii (GCN), 360, 3DS, PC (Laptop), Wii U, and PS4.
I used to own a GBC, PS2, and DS Lite

Unfortunately, grinding is a necessity in Earthbound. It's part of why I just couldn't get into it.

Grinding isn't a necessity after Twoson, but the grind in the beginning is just completely and utterly boring even as a huge Mother fan that has beaten Mother 2/Earthbound about 5 times.

The only hard part I recall in EarthBound was the Department Store, but also the third Sanctuary (fortunately I think only 1, 7 and maybe 4 are required for story progress and the other can be put off, at least until the 8th one, at which point you need them all to proceed).

(though the game otherwise only has too many enemies, I think, if it catches you being a naughty little pirate )

Old school RPGs do have that level of tedium. At least with Earthbound it's not boring because frequently you are in danger of getting killed . And there's that auto-fight mode and instant-kill feature for the easier enemies. I don't see those features in other RPGs, and they help. I only recently completed Earthbound myself, playing on the Wii U. Having come to terms with the fact that old-school tedium and difficulty do not always appeal to me, I felt no guilt in heavily using Wii U save states to smooth my experience over.

The only trouble I had with enemies was when Paula got kidnapped in the damn mall, I had the s***tiest luck with enemy placement, tho. There would always spawn two presents at the top of the last elevator and hand my butt to me

Other than that it was relatively easy. Not a walk in the park the first time around, but I never had to grind or anything.

Pretty much my experience with the game. Through out my playthrough, I never found anything that difficult. The only other things that tripped me up were the final guardian, the road to the final boss, and the boss in Moonside.

Only time bosses gave me a hard time was Shroooom, and sometimes Carbon Dog/Kraken.
