Ahhhh Double D for the Nes, I've definitly got a bit of Nostalgia tied to this one...I mean who can forget that memorable cheesy awesome Box Art? Along with the first stage's killer up beat track? Or the hilariously awesome intro where your girl friend gets knocked out in style and taken away by a few of the Chrime Lord's renegade henchmen? Or even that tricky moment in the third level where you have to jump over that bridge while avoiding getting sucker punched and knocked into the water? And don't even get me started with those 2 giant creepy rock faced knuckle heads where it seems like 'jump kicking' is the only logical way to take them down.

And finally, that oh so sweet clip from everybodies favorite movie 'The Wizard' where the Wiz' kid was racking up a killer high score on the Nes DD Arcade. It was SO high infact, that he even made the Clerks head turn in amazement.lol

And you know, I'm suprised by just how well the gameplay holds up. It's pretty damn fun, very satisfying and the combat is actually a wee' bit deep. I love how you get experience points and learn new abilities as you progress. And the more you play the more you learn which attacks are best against which enemy, or just by mixing up your kicks while using a weapon at the same time to unleash a bit more damage.

Anyways! The Night before Christmas I was plugging away at it for a couple of hours inbetween Christmas movies like Jim Henson's 'The Christmas Toy'(God I LOVE that movie!)and Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer hehe. But I can't get past the 3rd level! I ended up getting slaughtered by two of those smoking hot 8-bit Strippers with the whips in some cave.lol I'm going to give it a go in an hour or so and see how far I can get this time.

But yep, I've never played any of the sequals growing up sadly. Which were II, III, Super DD and the cross over with the Battletoads. How were they?

DDII was alright. DDIII was my favorite of the three. I don't think I ever played Super DD or Double Dragon V. When Battletoads & Double Dragon came out, I went crazy, like every other kid I know who loved the two. It was a lot of fun, and it was amazing to play as both of them, and I think I liked that one better than any iteration in either series.

I wonder when II and III, along with Super DD will hit the Wii's VC. It better happen, there's too much potential with the VC, but it feels like it's on life support, Nintendo's killing it!

Anyways, apperantly DD V is garbage, and is the only bad DD game in the franchise. It's supposed to be based on some DD Cartoon and unlike the previous games it's a fighter in the same vein as street fighter, but nowhere near as good. The graphics and character style also look pretty damn horrible.

Adventure Island II and III need to happen also.

We need Double Dragon 2 on VC badly. That's my favorite of the series. Super Double Dragon on Snes wasn't bad either.

I have a copy of Double Dragon 2 for the NES in my storage shed and I also have a copy of Super Double Dragons which IMO was the best one of the series. Battletoads and Double Dragon was good too especially the SNES version.

I think story wise the only ones that were true sequels were Double Dragon 2 and 3 on the NES. Super Double Dragon was almost like a Reboot of the series and Battletoads and Double Dragon was just a spinoff type that had no connection storyline was to the series. As for Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls dont get me started on that one. It was made during the whole tournament fighting game crazy and was based on the horrible cartoon series. The controls were bad the graphics were bad and the sound was bad.

Speaking of bad Double Dragon things anyone remember the live action movie? If you dont I dont blame you.

Yeah I remember the Double Dragon movie. It had that guy from Terminator 2 that played the T-1000 as the bad guy.
Ugh that movie was awful. Not sure what's worse that or the Street Fighter movie.

@Tasuki: Yeah nothing says Double Dragon quite like the Iron Chef host and a dude from Party of Five. I like the movie when I was little though And speaking of the Tournament Fighter craze, TMNT: Tournament Fighters should have been another TMNT IV ish beat em up

I'll take the Double Dragon movie over Street Fighter any day. Yes the DD movie was pretty damn bad, but there's some mild cheesy fun to be had hehe....Street Fighter on the other hand was utter depressing trash. Yet the first Mortal Kombat destroys them both muhaha. That movie was so awesome at the time. I remember being around 11 years old and seeing it in theatres on opening day, good times! Hell, the main mortal kombat logo spinning in flames with that awesome MK theme song gave me chills. If anything, the actual fight scenes haven't aged well at all....

Anyways, I can't beat stage 4 on Double Dragon and it's totaly pissing me off. I have no problem blazing through the first 3 stages, but stage 4 screws me up everytime. Why? it's because of those stupid walls with the bricks coming out of them. There's ZERO pattern, they just randomly come out whenever they feel like it, and they take a nice chunk of damage from off your life bar as well. Just because of that ridiculous part which is at the very beginning of stage 4, I lost 2 lives in a matter of seconds. That so far has been the only crummy part of the game....I mean what am I supposed to do? You can't do nothing but guess when they're coming out, and when they do you have no time to dodge them.

Damn you Double D!

I love DD on the NES, even with all its faults. It was one of those games that my parents got me "just because" (ie, not for bday or christmas or whatever), which was rare way back then. They had to force me to go to bed that night. =) I was playing it again recently, but couldn't get that last level. Frustration!

The SF movie is fun, but i do prefer the DD movie, if only for two words -- Alyssa Milano. Mmmm.

(and as an aside, @WaveBoy -- A CHRISTMAS TOY! i LOVE that one but haven't seen it since ... well, probably around when it originally aired a million years ago. Was it on TV this year or do you have the DVD?)

My brother and I played this game so much growing up. Hundreds of times im sure if not more. Great game lol and yes I hate the bridge part. Even having somewhat mastered it, I still remember getting screwed over a few times.

I actually got it a couple of weeks ago on DVD. The sad part about it is that they took out the intro and ending with Kermit the frog. Anyways, it's a magical little brilliant film and will put on a smile on anyones face. God, they just don't make them like they used to!

And as for DD, I finally made it to the last Boss(I'm guessing) with the machine gun? Jump kicking didn't seem to work since he ducked and dodged it every time! I only got a couple of kicks in, but he pretty much wasted me in a matter of seconds. God this game is tough....Mainly because of that part with the bricks AND the final Boss. The rest isn't too bad.

But theres definitly a bit of frustration to be had when jumping on a platform. You can't get 'too' close to the edge, otherwise you'll just fall off if you try to make an attempt to jump. And what's up with hilarious akward part where you have to fall down those ledges while dodging the incoming bouncing rocks in the 3rd stage?lol Your characters facial expression looks completely whacked out, as if he was scared by a spooky ghost.lol Not only that, but you're basically falling face first each time you fall.

Alright, I can now blaze through the entire game except I can't last more than 10 seconds against the final Boss. And those Bricks that pop out of the wall while being ridicously random and complete BS are now easier to manage....As long as you walk by the one that pops out at head level and start jump kicking through the rest of them. You may get hit once or twice or not at all which is alot nicer then getting slaughtered by almost each and everyone of them.

Anyways, as for the last boss....His machine gun is so easy to get nailed by and it drains your life pretty badly. But ugh! Enough's enough, time to YouTube this and see how it's done! I'm tired of waisting my time playing through the game again and again and AGAIN just to get destroyed by the last boss every time. I like my games tough, but this last boss is BS. you don't even get a standing chance damnit.

Edit
Just finished the game! muhaha. And without the help of YouTube which I passed on. I ended up kicking the crap out of that final boss(Willy) with the machine gun, and he was actually pretty damn easy. Kicking him in the gut and kneeing him in the head was the best way to take him down...And as soon as I thought the game was going to end, and show me a typical simplistic cut scene saving my girlfriend, out pops my brother Jimmy! The suprise head leader of the baddies, unless you've already read the Nes manual already telling you that in his charcter description haha.

And why in the hell is he green? Anyways, he took a while to take down but overall he wasn't too tough except for his annoying jump kick.

And after that it shows your gf relaxing in a elegant beautiful posche dining room-lik pad....Like she had it 'that' bad.lol Anyways, overall I'd probably nail this game with a 7.5/10 or an "8" at the most. And what was up with that horrible fighting mode? Eh, I guess it's kind of fun picking Obobo and watching him run into walls.lol

I don't know what's up with the Double Dragon franchise right now. If it's just in limbo, or just dead period. Downloaded the arcade version (where we get the Marian upskirt when she's carried off, LOL) on Xbox Live Arcade a while back. Then, later on I read that the game had been "delisted" (removed) from XbLA, because the distributor, Empire Interactive, went out of business. Hope we see Double Dragon again in some form one day. I have fond memories, and have been playing it since the NES days!

And yes, Alyssa Milano is damn yummy (almost feel like a perv saying that, since I remember her as a little girl in "Commando).

Let's attack aggressively, kupo! :D

Pretty much the series is in Limbo right now. Hopefully we might see a resurrection of this series in the near future.
