Its sounds like you're thinking about it far too much. Just start playing more!

As others have stated you can't let that nostalgic glow get in the way of your enjoyment of current games. If you go into something telling yourself you won't enjoy it... well, you know the rest.

I don't see how we can possibly pass judgement on any kind when this console "generation" isn't even close to over yet. Especially with the Wii and DS, there are still many more amazing games coming out. Still, Super Mario Galaxy 2 isnt quite out yet, and if its anything like the first...

Metroid: Other M, Zelda Wii, Fantasy Life, Ni no Kuni, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles, the possible Kirby Wii, Sin and Punishment 2, Last Window, Epic Mickey, Pokemon Black/White, Scribblenauts 2, The Grinder, Trauma Team, PoP: The forgotten sands, Okamiden, and of course games like Lego Harry Potter for all you harcore nerds.

Thats not even mentioning download games like Super Meat Boy, And Yet it Moves, Night Game, Sonic 4, and the new Earthworm Jim. ____

Actually games have gotten longer, it's just that they've also getting easier so you're not dying a bazillion times along the way. Personally, I'm happy about that, since if I'm paying money for a game, I'd actually like to be able to get to the end instead of throwing the controller in frustration and then putting the game in the back of my collection, dreading the day when I have to play it again.

Ths generation's output is pretty dull. At least on the Nintendo side of things. The Wii gets games that are obsolete in all ways but graphics, but much more expensive then readily available cheaper games.

The DS is still good, lots of interesting new concepts that aren't restrained by pressure for amazing graphics. Lots of updates of old games, or expansions of series. The gameplay tends to be better usually since it's of more relevance to developers than those of console games.

For the most part handheld games are focused on just being fun. On the other hand lots of console games have shifted in focus to being more of an experience, with less gamplay and more cinematics. I enjoy gaming for fun more so than for experience, although appreciate an awesome experience Twilight Princess is pretty sweet at the moment.

I mean seriously, the only horror game the N64 had was the Resident Evil 2 port...

Nes > Wii > Snes > GCN > N64

While not really in the "horror" genre, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil was intensely frightening. Castlevania also had some scary moments (hellhounds, guy chasing you through a hedge maze with a chainsaw).
Arcade games (Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero, Robotron 64), Racing games (Rush 2049, SMK64), Fighting Games (MK4, KI:G, BioFreaks, SSB), Adventure games (both Zeldas), RPG (Only Quest 64 comes to mind), FPS's (007, Turok 1,2,3, Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini),... and tons more.

I bought tons of games for N64 and just loved that console.

The Wii is easily one of my favorites as well - I haven't purchased this many games since the N64 (my GC and XBox collection don't total up to as many games as I have on the Wii). Combine that with my virtual downloads and the fact that Portal is part of this generation makes this a great time for video games.

To me this generation is like the renaissance of gaming. Like many who have posted previously, I stopped at Snes and the Wii brought me back. What I am most impressed by is the independent developers making things for wii ware. There are some really inventive games out there. I think that maybe this generation only doesn't compare if you are looking at past generations with nostalgic glasses on...

You sooo weren't born in the 80's when Nintendo ruled the world weren't you?
Seriously, the NES was flat out amazing, sooo many damn good memories and games. There's no way you can call the NES 'meh' compared to the Wii.

He didn't call it meh. He called it bleh.

Again, statements on either side of the coin are heavily influenced by nostalgia. Sure, the NES produced plenty of classics but they are outnumbered by the turds on the system. Just like it is for every other system.

I never saw the appeal of the NES. In the 80's I remember them being extemely expensive - like £40 a game. When the C64 and the Amiga, which were technically superior, were selling games for under £5 (and these are the same games that appeared on the NES in most cases - not cheap knock offs), I never understood why anyone would consider buying one.

Hmm... this generation offers a ton of variety, plenty of great games, and actual innovation beyond just improved graphics. It's got three successful consoles that all have unique advantages. So I don't think you can write off the whole generation of games.

That said, I do find that "mainstream" gaming isn't for me any longer. It's too much of the same with only slight improvements over previous iterations. It's too much hype without the substance to back it up. Most of the marquee games (on any console) are just not as appealing for me as the less popular experimental stuff that takes risks to follow a different creative vision. Luckily there are enough games in both categories -- traditional blockbusters and niche games -- to keep everyone happy.

That might have been the case in Europe, but I doubt many in North America even knew those (C64 and Amiga) existed at the time.

I totally agree. Once I hit college (99-2003), I lost some interest in gaming, but still played a few classics here and there--Prime, Eternal Darkness. Then I left the country, then I came back and I had only a lingering interest in picking up used Gamecube games cheap at Blockbuster. But once the Revolution/Wii was announced and revealed, whoa man, that old feeling welled up inside me again and I've been pretty consistently playing again since I got my Wii in early 2007. I loved my SNES and N64, but there's something about the mix of inventive new experiences and old classic games available all on the same system that makes me question how so many people let their Wii "gather dust." I love that shiny white box.

I know but I still knew people with a NES here. Spending nearly £35 more on a game with worse sound and graphics - I just didn't get it. At least the Americans had little choice in the matter to justify it.

I think this generation is alright, not as memorable as the N64 or GCN for me though. I wasn't even around for NES OR SNES, but I can imagine liking SNES alot more than the Wii generation also. I liked Metroid Prime 3 (even though it wasn't as memorable as the first), Super Mario Galaxy(even though Mario Sunshine and 64 were more original), Twilight Princess(I liked the n64 and GCN ones better), Smash Bros Brawl.(I kinda liked Melee better, because of the "big" jump from the original), Mario Kart(this one was really fun for me and I think is just as great as the others), No More Heroes, Wii Fit Plus and Resort are ok for parties and stuff, and then there's the VC and WiiWare which have given me alot to play.
I just got a PS3 for Christmas and I loved all the games I got for it, except the DL games aren't as good, and the games don't have as much replay once you get all the trophies, but the first time through is the best.

I can only assume that Nintendo had better advertising over there at the time? Hype is a powerful thing, after all.

Luigi-la-bouncy

My interest in gaming was very high from the 8 bit generation to 64 bit generation. Then I lost interest in gaming for a few years and pretty much skipped a generation. Then when I heard about the Wii and motion controls it peeked my interest and now I'm completely hooked again. So no I don't feel this generation is less good.

Yeah though I suppose I did eventually start spending around £40 on games by the time the Megadrive was released, though. However I think the games on that were of a higher quality than the Amiga's titles.

Beacuse the Playstation only played video games, it had more focus on video games. That's why the PS2, PS3, Xbox, and 360 all suck. Because they've overemphasized the systems' internet, CD, and DVD capabilities.

So the Playstation was great because it only played PS1 games and the PS2 sucks because it plays all PS2 games, all PS1 games, and DVDs as well? Your point is valid for the 360/PS3 but it turns stupid when applied to the Xbox (which revolutionized online gaming on consoles) and the PS2. You're basically saying everything except the GameCube and Wii suck. I owned a GCN and I now own a Wii and while I enjoy both of them, I have owned the same PS2 for 10 years and well... it's better than the Wii and GameCube. It's far better.
