Such as the Super Nintendo and the Sega Genesis? Or you guys just prefer the new stuff?

NHL '94 on Genesis is the greatest hockey game ever made.

I also quite enjoy NBA Live '95 on SNES. Primarily because of nostalgia, as we played that game a tremendous amount back in college.

She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

@the_shpydar Appearently you aren't the only one to think that about NHL 94 on the Genesis. In fact all the NHL games starting with NHL 14 they have added in an option for NHL 94 mode which basically makes the game play just like NHL 94 except for the rosters of course which use current rosters. Currently I am playing NHL 16 in that mode and I am loving it.

Back to the question at hand though yes I prefer sports games on the SNES over modern consoles for the main fact is because they are more simplistic and arcade like then modern sport games. I love games like Ken Griffey Jr Presents MLB and Tecmo Super Bowl on the SNES and games like Tommy LaSorda Baseball, NBA Jam and Greatest Heavyweights on the Sega Genesis and Sega CD.

Dunk Dream/Street Hoop, Soccer Brawl, Ultimate 11, Neo Turf Masters and Windjammers are all excellent Neo Geo sports games that see regular play.

Generally speaking I only go back in time on sports games rarely, for a bit of nostalgia, and don't spend much time on them. Been there, done that.

Sensible Soccer was absolutely fantastic at the time, but a modern FIFA game just offers so much more in terms of character animations and manoeuvres, so it allows much greater immersion for me.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

Playing this tonight! Lakers versus Celtics & the NBA Playoffs. This game was when I realized SEGA was truly taking things to the next level.

NBA Jam, NHL 96, Tecmo Super Bowl and Ken Griffey Jr Presents Major League Baseball are all fantastic pick up and play games. You don't have to even like sports to have fun playing those today

If you count motor-sports, and the GBA, then Moto Racer Advance is a game I still play, otherwise I try and play newer stuff.

I also think NHL '94 is the best hockey game ever!!! I have the SEGA CD version while my cousin had it on Genny. I'll admit, I like the Genesis cartridge slightly better than the disc. It's still fun to this day!

@Tasuki The 'tl;dr' version is this: SEGA CD has better audio but lame loading screens. Actual gameplay remains the same between the two games.

The gameplay and the gameplay graphics are identical between the two versions. So, nothing new there. The main differences are the SEGA CD version has improved audio (due to the CD quality sound) but, conversely, has some annoying loading screens (which is my main gripe with it).

The back of the SEGA CD case indicates it has "500 Megs of new features". One of those features is a grainy, full motion video, of authentic NHL footage. It's pretty neat and could possibly pass for an early PSone FMV but once you've seen it once, there's no need to sit thru it again. Yet, each time you turn the game on, it's going to take a good 10 seconds to load this video and you'll find yourself frantically hitting the Start button to skip it. When it finally registers your button press, it takes another 7-10 seconds to load this screen. Once that screen is finished, another 7-10 seconds of waiting is required to get to the main menu. Wow!

In the Genesis version, you can skip ALL of that and be at the main menu in mere seconds. You'll be playing an actual game in the Genny cart way before you can even get to main menu in the SEGA CD version.

The true advantage of the CD over the cart is the music. It has way better crowd and sound effects. Plus there's real organ music which just adds to the already awesome gameplay atmosphere. In my opinion, the CD quality sound is the only advantage to having this version over the cartridge.

But really, that's it. My cousin and I always got tired of the loading screens and found the SEGA CD version to be inferior because of this. We would rather sacrifice the great sound fx for a quicker menu UI.

(If you notice, in that video link I provided above, from the moment when the SEGA CD console was turned on - it takes the gamer at least 50 seconds to just get to that grainy, unnecessary FMV ..... and there's even more waiting involved after that - lol, smh).

@bezerker99 Ah yeah that's what I thought was the bad loading time. It's like MK for the Sega CD. Best version of the game look and sound wise, but the loading time especially during the Endurance matches and Shang Tsung match were just aweful.

@Tasuki Exactly! I also have Mortal Kombat for SEGA CD and .... same situation .... imo it's not the best version to play on a home console. It prides itself mainly on the FMV at the beginning of the game (which is kinda cool, actually) and the CD quality sound. But the loading times are something I could live without and the graphics aren't that much greater than the carts. I'd much rather play the quick loading Genesis or SNES cartridge over it.

So a bit of trivia for today. With Kevin Garnett retiring today there are now no longer any active players in the SNES, Sega Genesis or Saturn versions of NBA Jam.

Here's the last 16-bit sports game I own. (I regret selling MLBPA Baseball for the SNES..... as it's MUCH better than Tommy Lasorda Baseball) .....btw, this cover is truly the thing of nightmares! D:

@bezerker99 I loved Tommy LaSorda Baseball on the Genesis. That was one game that my friend and I would always play at his house. We both were big into baseball then so he had a Genesis at the time so we would play Tommy LaSorda Baseball at his place and when he came over to my place we would play Ken Griffey since I had a SNES.

@Tasuki I used to have a notepad with a ton of Tommy Lasorda Baseball passcodes but .....I've been looking for it and can't find it. Would have been cool to continue a season I had going 25 years ago.

Remember Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball? Wasn't that for the SNES? It wasn't that great, lol. My cousin and I, if we didn't already own the cartridges, we rented them every weekend and I'm almost certain we have played every 16-bit sports game ever made.

Mutant League Football and Hockey were some of my favorites.

Tasuki

@bezerker99 Haha Yeah Bill Laimbeer was indeed on SNES. I remember renting that as well and playing it against my brother. I also remember renting FIFA alot too on the SNES.
