Whats your thoughts on this game? Will we ever see it on VC? Was the DS version good?

I had this game for the 64, never did get Mario Kart 64. I loved it. I have heard a few people talk negatively about the game. Wondered what the general thoughts on the game were around these parts.

I love the game. It provides a unique twist on a kart racing game, using three different modes (kart, hovercraft, plane). It is very similar to Mario Kart, but the Donkey Kong theme makes it fun.

Due to the inclusion of Conker and Banjo, both of which are Rare characters, I highly doubt we'll see it on the Virtual Console, unless they can successfully replace them (Dixie and Tiny were added to the DS version).

The DS version, while notably different, retains most of the fun the original had. The lack of an analog stick makes for poor controls (especially the plane). The mic interacts with the hovercraft (spinning), the plane (blowing), and the car (spinning). Dixie and Tiny replace Conker and Banjo, and all characters have new voices. Still, it's worth getting. It took me awhile to figure out how to replace my name and avatar with that of the chosen character, but it is possible.

DKR was an awesome game. It had some awesome courses, awesome variety with the different vehicles, and an awesome single-player mode.

It also got really hard later on in the game. The only downside I had with the game was that Krunch could hardly steer, I once practiced the first track in the game, trying to hit the zippers and such with him, I'm not sure if I managed it for all three laps...

I'd assume that a VC release would be unlikely since Conker and Banjo are present.

I have the N64 cart, and I feel that it's one of the best spin-offs that Nintendo SHOULD'VE made a series out of.

I'm not sure if it's better than Mario Kart or not...I recall it having more variety and better multiplayer, but it's been too long.

I loved that game when I was a kid. I thought about getting the DS version, but it seems like the changed a lot (like no more silver coins challenges), and I would rather have the original version.

I don't think it will happen, but if all it requires is changing the proprietary Rare characters, it's possible. There's precedence in changing characters for both the DS version and in other games with licensing issues for the VC.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

I never played it. I gotta go over to my friends house. He has a N64 and basically all the classics people are always bragging about when defending Nintendo.

The Game.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

@TokenGirl: Get the DS version. They didn't change much, save for the controls and the characters (somewhat). Otherwise, it's just as fun as the original.

I can get why Conker would be a problem, but Banjo has had two THQ games as well as a cameo in Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise.

Rare also worked on Viva Pinata.

Sounds like you're better off sticking with the original then, I've not played DS but I've heard it's much worse.

I dunno how easy it would be to remove Conker and Banjo though, it'd require more work than a simple sprite recolour like they did in a few other games.

I personally never owned this game, but I thought it was a great game for it's time. Sadly, the Nintendo DS version didn't live up to expectations.

Like others, I believe it's unlikely we'll see the game on the Virtual Console. Now Nintendo could change Banjo and Conker, but they would NEVER do that and never will. They would rather risk billions of dollars just to use Banjo and Conker in order to put the game on the Virtual Console. However, releasing it with everything intact is indeed possible. This is not completely an Banjo and Conker game. It consist of those two franchise plus the Diddy Kong racing franchise. Nintendo wouldn't need to acquire the right to the entire for the game to appear on the Virtual Console, just two Rare characters. I also heard Microsoft is still willing to give Nintendo the chance to settle on that agreement with Rare they had about Goldeneye 007 a few years back. If Nintendo can borrow the right to use Banjo and Conker for just this game legally by Rare and Microsoft, they can send it to the ESRB/PEGI/OFLC/USK and get the game release there. However, this will be very difficult. I say the game has an 35% percent of making an Virtual Console apperance.

I think it's a great game, and it have aged better than Mario Kart 64 IMO. My favorite character was,and still is,Tiptup.
Awesome that he had a cameo in BK.

I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on hari-kiri rock!!! I NEED SCISSORS!!! 61!!!

Excellent game, I never beat Wizpig in that final race though... so close!
I also thought was better that Mario Kart 64. Would certainly get this if was on the VC, though as mentioned above the Character roster is problematic.

I really like this game, and used to play it a lot. Unique twist on racing games. I thought that the plane Wizpig race was easy, while the car race was really difficult. Happily to say I have beat them both.

I destroyed Adventure 1 and Adventure 2. Fantastic game, with one of the craziest turbo systems ever (release the accelerator before a turbo, and don't press the accelerator again, until the coloured smoke coming out the back of the kart go's grey). Coin races were fantastic, weapon accumulation system was sweet, and the all the boss races were really fun. Wizpig in a kart was one of the toughest things ever, but once you figured out the turbo system, everything became a lot easier.

Such fond memories of that game, one of the best on 64. Some of the multiplayer arena's were really fun too, especially the hovercraft one. My favourite characters were Timber, Bumper, Conker, and of course... T.T.

Diddy Kong Racing was the first game I ever bought with my own money. It was an incredible game which put an excellent spin on the racing genre by adding the adventure element.
It also had one of the best cheats ever with the 'jointventure' code which let you play co-op. Not to mention excellent music - forget rage against the machine for xmas #1, there should be a campaign for the Frosty Village theme for #1!

Never got the DS version as I didn't want to ruin the magic
