I've never been a big fan of Contra. It's just too hard, and the game isn't fun enough to justify how hard it is. I have always liked metal slug, though. Running and gunning through the streets and then jumping into a tank and multiplying the destruction...ah, yes. Good times. I remember playing Metal Slug at movie theatre arcades, along with Time Crisis (the original, which hasn't aged very well)

I've always seen Contra and Metal Slug as totally different.
Contra is a serious run-and-gun game, with high difficulty to give players a real challenge. Contra 3 and 4 are prime examples of this - you try again and again to memorize the stages and get enough skill to survive to the end. The only one in the series which deviates from this (and the most awesome one IMO) is Contra: Hard Corps for the Genesis which was just... crazy fun. 4 playable characters who are totally different, including a wolfman and a tiny robot, and you fight robots the size of skyscrapers etc.
Metal Slug is an over the top comedy arcade game which isn't difficult so much as impossible at times - it's designed to chew up your coins. It's hella fun but there's a lot less tactics involved compared to Contra - when you get a special weapon, you spam it to destroy enemies nearby until you're back to your pea shooter, for example.
