Wasn't Fusion designed to introduce newcomers to the 2D games? That would make it the best choice for someone who has only played Prime and Echoes.

I don't think so. Fusion is really difficult and is definitely not for newcomers. Super Metroid fits that description much, much better.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.

I see a few Fusion is difficult in this thread. I found that game rather easy myself. What did people find so difficult about it?

Comparing it to Super Metroid it was just naturally more difficult. Having the X virus chase you, and with the OP bosses, Fusion had the potential to kick your ass. Sure, some people found it easy, but at it's core it's not an easy game.

I found Super Metroid harder overall than Fusion because it had a bigger world and didn't have Adam telling you were to go next. I think Metroid bosses in general are easy for the most part in that after a couple times of facing them you recognize their pattens. Then from there it's just blasting them with missles and avoiding getting hit as best you can. I didn't have to explore nearly as much as I did in Super Metroid which is where I find the difficulty in Metroid games.

And Fusion was hard I guess, but really it was if you don't take hits much very easy, the issue was screwed up damage ratios where little guys did like 1/4 of an e-tank, medium was like 1/2, and bigboys did an entire block which was just dumb design...also having it point you the way the entire time taking any form of non-linearity out of play which the series is known for made it terrible too.

Most action games become pretty easy if you can avoid taking a lot of hits. For those of us who can't, it makes Fusion pretty hard.

@Ryno Most gamers prefer not to have to memorize huge locations, even back when the original Metroid was released. Also, the Screw Attack isn't obtained until late in the game, so that doesn't help much with the tedious health refills.

What games actually had a map during the NES days? Friday the 13th? The original Metroid world doesn't require that much to memorize. Also, when do you pick up Screw Attack? I get it well within the first half of the game.

I agree with that. Super Metroid was the biggest SNES game at the time of it's release. (24 MEG if I remember correctly)

I think Fusion is mostly the same difficulty as Super Metroid, but Fusion always guides the player with a general objective. I'm pretty sure it was intended to be more mission-based and helpful for new players. OP said they've played Prime and Echoes, so wouldn't Fusion be the best 2D game to play first?

Actually, forget it. Anyone who's played Prime and Echoes shouldn't have trouble finding their way around a Metroid game. I'd go with Super Metroid. >_>

Most other games in the NES era weren't big or confusing enough to need one. I guess you do get the Screw Attack in the first half of the game, but you still have to get through Brinstar and part of Norfair, a good sized chunk of the game, plus the Screw Attack doesn't save you that much time with only so many enemies to attack at once before you have to either go somewhere else or exit and reenter the room.

I disagree, plenty of NES games were big and confusing and could have made things easier with a map. The Battle of Olympus, Legacy of the Wizard, Clash at Demonhead to name just a few. I don't think Metroid is that big and is therefore not that difficult to remember but I realize I must be in the minority because that is the number one comment I read regarding the game.

NIntendo is probably too busy working on another Mario Kart, the next Super Mario in 2D and 3D, along with game that starts another new timeline of The Legend of Zelda to spend time on that silly Samus.

I'm not sure what all the fuss is about Fusion, that is the second easiest game next to Other:M. I find Super Metroid to be one of the hardest in the series simply because I always find myself getting lost in the huge world. It's also very confusing since the layout is much the same as Metroid, and Zero Mission. Needless to say Super is my least favorite in the series.

It's interesting how some of you define difficulty in the Metroid series as in how difficult it is to get lost. You don't see that kind of thinking with hardly any other genre or subgenre.

Personally, I'm a traditionalist as far as Metroid difficulty goes. I can always look up a map online. The difficult Metroid games to me are the ones where I have a harder time staying alive. Who cares if the objectives are straightforward in Fusion if I keep getting killed by SA-X or the other bosses before I can complete them? (I actually haven't played much of Fusion yet, so I don't yet know if they'll give me a lot of trouble, but you get my point.)

That would be cool.
But I would prefer an e-shop release, 3D Classic: Super Metroid.
The others can be released on their own in the e-shop.

Second that.

As far as difficulty goes in the Metroid Series, it can be broken into two depending on how willing the person is to use a map. Fusion, to me, ranks near the top in terms of getting killed, but is very easy in terms of finding one's way. Super Metroid is easy in bosses, and a bit difficult in terms of navigation. I'm not one who likes their pace to be broken too much by finding my way around or via a puzzle, so I eventually will use a map if such a case arrives. Super Metroid really isn't all that difficult in finding one's way though, the trouble for me is with Metroid, Metroid 2 and Metroid Prime 2's portal network. Zero Mission is the easiest overall, outside of doing any special runs like 100% and low %.

While I like the originals, such as Super Metroid. To me, Metroid Prime is a masterpiece.
