Ive really been getting into metroid recently and have been playing prime 1&2 extensively, and i just wanted to know what people think to be the best metroid game in the series and why?

Probably...Super Metroid (In my opinion the best game ever). Why? Because it's so well-made. The game contains a incredible amount of attention to detail, and the music is as epic as the game's overall size.

Metroid Zero Mission is my favorite. It took the underdeveloped first game and put the Super Metroid polish onto it.

super metroid for me, followed by prime 1 and fusion.

the ending of super metroid is the highlight of the game: the baby metroid coming to save samus from being killed by mother brain only for it to save her life and sacrifice her own in the process. and the gameplay is pure side scrolling brilliance.

prime 1 was great too and i loved fusion. i'd love to see another 2D side scrolling metroid being made for the 3DS with a first-person prime type game for the wii U.

Of the ones I've played, I'd rank them:
Super Metroid
Prime (Wii version only, I can't overcome the GC controls)
Metroid
Prime 2
Fusion
Prime 3

Fusion is by far the hardest imo, if you're looking for a challenge.

Super Metroid easily, best all around design, gameplay mechanics, structure.

...and dude..seriously, Metroid was NOT under-develeoped. I'm not even a huge fan of the series so don't take it as defensiveness, but that's a really stupid comment. It was well developed and designed, totally new type of game and gameplay structure when it came out. It was developed for the time, not under-developed. Sorry if it's too hard for you or confusing since there isn't a built in game map.

NotEnoughGolds — can't argue that comment one bit about Prime on Gamecube, terrible controls broke the gameplay in it quite nicely unfortunately. NOA's sorry excuse was 'first person adventure'...yeah,no, it's a FPS with no aiming allowed unless you stand there doing a button combo getting your ass shot off so you can be on equal play with the space pirates. It was sort of manageable on the whole, until the Omega Pirate and all his little clown strafing around which is where the Wii game notably made things right. And Fusion was hard I guess, but really it was if you don't take hits much very easy, the issue was screwed up damage ratios where little guys did like 1/4 of an e-tank, medium was like 1/2, and bigboys did an entire block which was just dumb design...also having it point you the way the entire time taking any form of non-linearity out of play which the series is known for made it terrible too.

The best are Super Metroid and Prime.

Fusion is more linear, but still has lots of navigation and puzzles. It also has an amazing story.

Corruption is disappointing compared to Prime and Echoes. It's good, but definitely not as great as the first two.

Real Metroid fans know Zero Mission and Prime 3 are the best in the series.

Here is my list of favorite to least favorite that I have played:

Super Metroid: Love the atmosphere - graphics, music, locations. Can play this one over and over and over again.
Metroid (NES): Revolutionary game when released. Makes you actually memorize locations unlike games of today. Kraid's Theme will will be one of those top NES songs for me.
Prime 3 Corruption: Outstanding controls and beautiful worlds to explore. Music is great as well.
Zero Mission: Interesting remake of Metroid. After the battle with Mother Brain was a fun addition.
Fusion: Was good, still 2D Metroid but not my favorite. To linear maybe??? Liked the chase by SA-X parts. Fusion suit added something new to the series.
Return of Samus: Spooky atmosphere and challenging, one of the Gameboy's best games.
Other M: Still fun but just felt off for Metroid. When in first person I wanted Prime controls and when I was in third person I thought I was playing NInja Gaiden Sigma II.

Someday I need to get around to playing Prime 1 & 2 on the Wii.

The first Metroid game WAS under-developed IMO. You can have yours too. No save points, every time you die you have to spend over an hour re-building your energy stores. My second favorite game was Return of Samus, and that game is freaking hard as well. The simple addition of a save point and some energy charging stations was all it took. The maps were just gravy.

But wasn't the game supposed to be Alien in Game form. (mertoid II moreso) save points and charging stations everywhere would hurt that.

My favorite is Metroid Prime Hunters, and that is by a significant margin.

Shooting is one of the elements of Metroid that has been around since it began, and I feel Metroid Prime Hunters created the most engaging shooting in the series. This is the only game in the series to have a full headshot system in place for weapons, and this makes having great accuracy very rewarding. The Imperialist's one hit kill zoomed headshot is the most satisfying to pull off in my opinion, where as the Charged Power Beam has become the one I most commonly pull off. Thankfully since the focus is on weapon upgrades in this game, they weren't all just straight firing weapons as lobbing and rebounding traits were brought to the table. This put a fresh spin on the combat, and a bit more thought into it, as now not only accuracy is a factor to get quality shots but also arc paths and rebounding hit points along surfaces.

Replay value is, to me, the highest in this entry of the series. Just referring to the single player alone, there is plenty of completion routes to take to complete the mission. Since this effects the order of the weapons you get and the hunter/Guardian encounters, there is a bit of strategy involved in which territories are visited. For instance, defeating all the hunters in their first encounters before going deeper into any of the territories leads to a higher chance of them appearing more when revisiting the territories later in the game, as instead of worrying about the reappearance of say three hunters across the territories you would now have to worry about all six. That said, Hunters uses chance as hunter reappearances after the first defeat are random as are the Guardian encounters in second visits/escapes. It adds an element of surprise to the game, and makes it addicting to play to just see what new circumstances will be thrown at Samus to contend with. Factoring the bot matches into the mix, which allow all hunters to be played, Metroid Prime Hunters provides a near limitless amount of replay value. I often think of the single player adventure mode and the bot matches as a 2-in-1 game package.

The game shines with polish in terms of how strongly knitted the game's music, story, enemy placement and environment details are. One of the most depressing music pieces I have heard in this series is played at the Arcterra landing site: Arcterra Gateway. The track sounds as if wind is rushing through empty spaces, fitting as much of the room is empty including an upper snowy hall, and the "wind" sounds can be applied to the thin clouds overhead swirling by. There are several chimes in the track too, indicating the presence of something grand, which again fits up with the Alimbic crests ordaments placed in the gateway celebrating the accomplishments of tribes and with the earning of another piece of the Alimbic Prophecy. The story we get in this exact location regarding Arcterra is that it is an inhospitable wasteland, which applies to that empty feeling the music emphasizes, and applies to the very low enemy count in the gateway. The only enemies in the area are a group of three maybe four Shriekbats, which really are always clinging to their lives by a string since they're suicide flyers when startled. The fact that the enemies placed in the gateway on first visit are not just few in number and to themselves, but will commit suicide, wraps back around to the depressing sounds of the music and again the emptiness.

If it was not evident in that last paragraph, this game houses a ton to put to interpretation. I've dived into that aspect a lot, and I come away from the game appreciating it continually more. It reminds me why it's my favorite whenever I have a play session with it or, like right now, am discussing it.

"The secret to ultimate power lies in the Alimbic Cluster."

Fusion is a dead perfect game. Prime is amazing too, and playing the Wii version Corruption on veteran mode is lots of very challenging fun. Super Metroid is really good, but I think the 2 GBA games are better.

Meta-Rift

Wasn't Fusion designed to introduce newcomers to the 2D games? That would make it the best choice for someone who has only played Prime and Echoes.

It takes you over an hour to refill your energy tanks? Yikes, you must not be looking in the right places. Once you have Screw Attack refilling energy tanks should only take a few minutes. The world is not that big and save points wouldn't save you that much time. Having to start from the beginning of each place actually forces you to learn and pay attention to the areas you are exploring.
