All I really can add is that I don't feel the DS is a continuation of the GBA at all, they while at times have a similar feel, they're quite uniquely different, especially when Nintendo would crudely force the use of touch in games, sometimes (opinion of many and not many others too) wrecking stuff like those Zelda titles.

GBA itself I think was a real pinnacle of what they pulled off in an easy to approach pick up and play style handheld system that had the perfect compromise between design of the system (comfort, spec, battery, screen) and games themselves (pick up and play, and not, but nothing overkill to confuse yet still ranging from thin to deep.) I've got a micro currently, my favorite though was the 'brighter' SP but the original had the comfort. Your best solution for GBA would be two chop-shop styles unfortunately depending on your need. If you want GB+GBC you get the original, have someone mod it adding in the 101 screen and gutting the outside screen off with a nice tempered glass plate. Your other choice if you're gBA only, a mod/chop job of a DS Lite where someone bondo/molds away the top and hinge assembly and sets it to just boot the GBA straight up on the bottom screen, then you have this nice single large clean screen GBA system that's comfy to use without the top part.
