Topic: Bringing back the GBA

This weekend I played brawl on the game cube at my friends house. This reminded me of the good old days of playing SSF and SSF2 on PC as a kid. I decided to play it again and found out they added online. I became obsessed with the Samus character and wanted to play Metroid because as a kid, I don't think i understood the story. Now I'm using an emulator to play it on pc. Then at school when I was talking to a fellow nerd at school, I thought about using the GBA. I remember how the first GBA (The Glacier one with the wide screen) I had was given to me when I was 4 or 5. I never used it until I was about 7 or 8 and found it in the attic of the house I moved into. I talked to my cousin and got a few games and began playing it. I would go to game stop every now and then to get some new titles. I remember going everywhere with that thing. I remember my travels back home to New York and going to places I had no clue why I was at, but I had my GBA, always playing Donkey Kong Country. One day, I think I had forgotten my GBA at home or wasn't using it at the time and my Dad told me he got me something. The next day I went to see it and it was the GBA sp (red) with a bag filled with a charger, a GBA to game cube connector, a magnifying glass, a multiplayer cord, an FM radio piece, and few more things. It also included the game Galaga and Galaxia. I got that when I was 8 or 9 and stopped using the regular GBA because the sp had light. My little sister reached in the drawer one day to pull out my GBA, and since she was so short, dropped it. The screen had turned half black like there was a split liquid (the LED i believe). I still had the sp but never used my GBA again Then one day I got the DS light (My dad was in touch with people) and started playing Golden Sun on it. I think I lost the charger or something for the sp. When I moved to Florida (still 9 years old), my sister stepped on the ds, breaking the piece connecting the 2 screens. It was pretty much half a ds until it completely stopped working. I went back to the GBA sp, trading games with a friend. One day when I was 11, my dad got it fixed by Nintendo (along with our broken wii). I used that again until I left it in New York when I was 13. My cousin kept forgetting to bring it back and I eventually got a 3ds over Christmas. Then over the summer my mom went to New York to visit, and brought back my ds (without my Pokemon white). Now I'm wondering if I should try to get a psp vita for Christmas or a GBA again. I really miss using the GBA's rectangular style and imagine how comfortable it would be. Ofcourse I could always get a background light mod for it, but I really miss the name Game Boy.

Yes, I know people think of the DS a continuation of the GBA because the words "Game Boy" was quite sexist, but (and I do think Nintendo is special for making the DS style) I really miss the old GBA style. I feel that psp is still a bit too wide and the GBA gives a retro feel (yet the psp go may be slow in certain aspects, but I think it's more pocket-able). Imagine a GBA (not the sp) remade exactly the same (with a few improvements), but this time with a slightly larger screen. I think now it would be tiny compared to my 3ds XL though. Here's a rough drawing (edited online photo) of what I think it should look like along with some specs and things I want in a handheld. http://i.minus.com/jfhFzK0iuUeYB.png

HAND HELD SPECS I'D LIKE
*Something pretty small and portable
*A way to protect the screen without the flip style (such as a case with a built in slide down screen cover)
*Same Nintendo style, maybe the joysticks the 3ds has
*Background light
*Camera
*Internet
*Skype
*Comfortable grip
*Phone compatible (like the psp vita at&t thing but with phone service)
*possible touch screen
*developer tools (like an easy way for developer to make games for the console)

Other than making a new GBA, I was thinking of bringing it back. Yes, Bring back a console that's more than 20 years old (well the whole Game Boy series is about 25 years old). I'm not too sure about the legal terms and such but bringing back the GBA is a dream for me. Imagine everyone getting a GBA again but soon we have online multiplayer and such. If we all pitch in on this, I think we can all find several ways to improve the GBA in ways anyone would want it. We could improve the graphics and screen size. I may be thinking too far out, but Imagine a world where everyone had a GBA again..a world where you go everywhere with this device in your pocket. Maybe Nintendo would notice our acts and re-create the GBA. Seriously, in this article, a developer explains how to create games for the GBA and actually play it on the console. Ignoring the money making part, let's go retro and create GBA games. Just like cell phones, you can create games for your own pocket device. Do you remember the days when you didn't have a cell phone and you just pulled out your GBA to play some Mario or Metroid (Metroid... Another topic to be discussed)? We pretty much have a console we can develop for easily (but unofficially).

Has anyone else thought of doing this? I know there are many bumps and cracks in my idea, but why not give it a try? Let's bring back Game Boy.

If there's a discussion to be had then don't make a huge wall of unedited text for people to read - this isn't the place for blog posts.

Who in the world thinks the name Gameboy is sexist? Also, are you talking about making a pitch to Nintendo or making your own GBA like console?

There were pink Game Boys for girls if they wanted.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

No.

More than 20 years? Ah, I remember, the year 1994, when the GBA was the top selling handheld, good times, good times... what? The GBA was released in 2001, making it just 13 years old...

I don't really see the point in bringing back the GBA. I like the GBA, but it's Nintendo's worst selling handheld. It still sold over 80 million units though. Besides, just buy a used GBA if you really want one, they should be easy to find for a reasonable price. So, again, I don't really get your point.

@Octane whether its the best or the worst, the GBA had huge library of games out of which, several are my favorites....Fusion, Wario Land 4 and Super Star Saga........really the worst selling system? Its just 30 behind........

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

1. I had the idea to bring it back to market if all else fails (for nostalgia)

2. An Android powered Game Boy Tablet? Game Tab?

I will update this when Half Life 3 arrives. [Started 17/11/2015]

Well, it is Nintendo's worst selling handheld. That's all I said. If Nintendo decides to bring back an old handheld system (don't even question why), from a bussiness perspective they're better off going with the original GameBoy.

Yeah, but it's a gross lipstick pink. Also, pink doesn't always have to be a girls' color. As a kid, I would refuse to have a pink console because it is too stereotypical and the Pokemon GB was far cooler.

I'll never understand people's logic when it comes to this. Just how exactly would things be better by changing the name back to Gameboy?

Agreed.
In fact, I honestly fail to see the purpose of this discussion at all.

DS is only for Dual Screen handhelds. A handheld that goes back to a single screen should go back to Boy.

Anita Sarkeesian?.

Seriously? Or are you guessing?

I really find it silly that someone would think the Game Boy line is sexist. I never felt like Nintendo was trying to exclude me just by adding the word Boy to a system.
