According to the North American instruction manual of Super Mario Bros. 2: "Birdo thinks he is a girl and likes to be called Birdetta. He likes to wear a bow on his head and shoot eggs from his mouth."
It was the eighties. People would not and did not make such a big deal about it back then. I remember it and all it got from me as a quiet laugh for a moment then I got on with playing the game.
Birdo is the very first transsexual video game character. I don't have a problem with her.
I think Tingle is much more creapy.
From the website: "He also likes to ride around on his balloon and sell maps to small children. Tingle is the kind of guy that they show on the 10 o' clock news that had worked at a Pizza Hut all of his life, and nobody knew he was a ticking time bomb waiting to happen."
I have no problems with the sexual orientation of people or video game figures ... I just didn't know that with birdo ... always thought that he was the female counterpart to yoshi...
"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
Ahh, don't be so hard on the guy. I know how he feels.

There can only be one, like in that foreign movie where there could only be one, and in the end there is only one dude left, because that was the point.
I just didn't know that with birdo ... always thought that he was the female counterpart to yoshi...
That's still not entirely incorrect. Birdo has become the female counterpart to Yoshi; I don't believe there's a single reference to Birdo being anything but female in all its recent appearances. Nintendo often shifts its mythologies around a little.

thats very creepy because in a later game (Mario and luigi superstar saga) he has a crush on a male character named popple and constantly speacks with <3's and stuff

I was just reading up on this a couple days ago because of something I read in the comment on a comic on Brawl in the Family. It seems Nintendo of America has made efforts to hide this fact without outright denying it, usually by never using gender-specific pronouns to describe Birdo. They just do like I did in that last sentence.
In Japan, they have no real problem with the idea (big surprise). It's actually a major plot point in the Japan-only Wii game Captain Rainbow.
@briunj04: Explains why Popple isn't interested and hesities before calling Birdo a "Dame," doesn't it. Plus, Birdo asked to be referred to as "Birdie." It's the least subtle reference to Birdo's questionable gender America has had in YEARS!

The manual says "He thinks he's a girl and shoots eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called Birdetta." Birdo does not wear a bow in SMB2. She was initially male, but due to the bad translation, had to be changed to female.
This topic has been discussed ad nauseam.
Concerning Yoshi, he has always been male. Also, remember that he became a Mario character years after Birdo debuted. They wouldn't be seen together until after Birdo became female.
@StarFox: You didn't pay very much attention to my post detailing the situation, did you? NoA is AVOIDING the issue, but they never actually made Birdo female. NoJ happily plays with the issue even to this day. The makers of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga somehow managed to sneak in references to the issue without NoA complaining.
@lz2009: My memory of that video had been missing that line. Anyway, you agreed that he's accepted as a guy, so no problems!
