Topic: Best SNES game

im getting a super nintendo (im so excited!) and i need to get some games for it. can anyone recommend a good game to me?

also, what genre is the SNES famous for?

I think the Platformers and the RPGs made the SNES awesome. I have only played 2 SNES games (I hope this changes)
Zombies Ate my Neighbors and Super Mario World are great games.

And famous for... Well, back in the day it was kinda a running joke that there was nothing but platformers on it. There were alot of them for sure, and many of them really good too. But looking closer, the number of RPG's actually rivals the number of genuine platformers (ignoring run'n'gun games and straight action fares and such). Unfortunately most RPG's never left Japan but there sure are alot of them. Still, the localized titles are generally still held in high regard so there's plenty of good RPGs to keep you busy if you enjoy the genre.

Also, earthbound. Played it pretty recently on an emulator and it was really fun and original.

I'd like to object to the suggestion of Mr Nutz if that's perfectly alright... It's adorably cute (almost sickeningly so), that's the only thing is has going for it. No one that doesn't have strong nostalgic bonds to that specific title will ever be able to consider it as anything more than an extremely run-of-the-mill platformer... If even that...

SoulBlazer I can kinda get behind though... If you can't find a copy of Illusion of Gaia that is... Or if you don't mind the story having the intelligence level of a children's ABC book....

Go for Super Mario Kart, probably the best game that you can't get on VC/GBA/DS.

Best Platformer- Super Mario World (also look into Donkey Kong Country 2, Castlevania IV, Yoshi's Island)
Best Space Shooter- Axelay
Best Racing Game- Super Mario Kart
Fighting Game- Street Fighter 2
Best Sports Games- Ken Griffey Jr's Baseball, Super Tennis, NBA Jam

I agree with the recommendation of Super Mario Kart as the best game you can't get on the VC. This is my FAVORITE game of all time, slightly ahead of Super Mario World.

You can't go wrong with any of these.
