No idea if it's actually forgotten, but I loved Spy vs. Spy, despite the fact I've never read the comics or Mad Magazine as a matter of fact. Too bad it will probably never appear on the Eshop.
Dunno about the best but here's some good ones.
Crystalis-Incredible game
Spot the Game-simple but I love it.
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom
Deja Vu
Journey to Silius-Good game, but could have benefitted from more health pick-ups
Whomp'em-Tight controls, pretty graphics, bizarre enemies, decent level design. This game needs more love
The Guardian Legend-Wish I didn't suck at the space shooter section
Metal Storm-Wow!
Faxanadu-great game
Simon's Quest-Well known, but gets a lot of unnecessary hate. Personally I love it
Faxanadu isn't hard, by any stretch. The leveling system is good and doesn't take forever, you get plenty of money for whatever rank you last saved as, the only things I can think of that are annoying are the way the character jumps, a couple of the dungeons, especially the last, and poor enemy AI.
It's a fantastic game though, I play through it a lot. It's trippy.
Shadow of the ninja/Blue shadow (better than ninja gayden)
Crystalis (I like it better than zelda)
Heavy Barrel (pretty much ikari warriors)
Vice Project Doom (ninja guiden cutscenes, cinematic)
RollerBall (favorite nes pinball game with 5 different screens)
Little Samson
Journey to Silius (Best soundtrack in an nes game)
Super C (kind of)
Galaxy 5000 (pretty fun RC Pro Am style game)
Gun Smoke
Commando (repetitive but fun)
1943 (better than 42 but harder)
Bionic Commando (not really but the sequel for gameboy color is also pretty good, a favorite series of mine)
Castlevania 2 (The hate isn't accurate. Yes its impossible without a guide, just like Zelda, but it has better graphics and was more fun to me than the first game but not the third one)
Super Spyhunter
Nightmare on Elm Street (fun with four player platforming)
Star tropics
NES had some of the best arcade ports (Galaga, Pacman, Galaxian, Burger Time etc
Mario
When people think of NES rpgs they usually think of Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy but Ultima III (Exodus), Ultima IV (Quest of the Avatar), and Ultima V (Warriors of Destiny) are worth noting as well. They are all decent ports of the original PC games.
Faxanadu! Loved it and still do. Had just the best music, a great theme and sense of place, and some really cool and diverse enemies! Plus, I LOVE how your guy's armor and weapons and even magic changes as you get better equipment, it's pretty awesome- especially for NES! Wish more games did that.
Hope he gets into Smash Bros or has a sequel someday.
@Shane76: I came here to say that. hahaha. Good for you. Robo Warrior, a bomberman spinoff, is a much better 1 player experience than Bomberman given the adventuring style of the game.
Has anyone heard of Kick Master for the NES? I first played it in 2013 and found it to be a good game I had never heard about before. Ken Lobb participated in its making.
Star Tropics, Air Fortress, Swords & Serpents, Adventure Island, Gun Nac, Legacy of the Wizard, Faxanadu, and other amazing games seem lost to the sands of time because the first party Nintendo titles and heavy hitters like Mega Man and Castlevania stick out as some of the iconic classics from the days of the NES. While the heavy hitters were great and all I'd contest that some of my favorite memories with the NES as a kid came from games that weren't gracing the covers of Nintendo Power and GamePro back then.
There are just so many classics along with games to still be discovered on the NES and that's one of the things that make the system so special.

Mr. Gimmick is awesome! Crystalis is great as well. Joy-Mech Fight really pushes the system.
River City Ransom and Final Fantasy III are both good and I almost said them, but I don't think either are really that forgotten.
Currently bored (while change when I stop being bored)
Adding my two cents: One of the action games I really enjoyed was Air Fortress. Each level has both a Gradius-style side-scrolling shooter stage and a Metroid-style interior stage. The bulk of the game is played in the interior, where you have to locate a power core, destroy it, and then make it back to your ship before the whole place explodes. It has an excellent sense of immersion - as you get progressively closer to self-destruct, the entire screen starts to shake, then the lights dim and brighten and the rumbling gradually increases. You have something like 2 minutes to make it out - in later levels, this becomes extremely difficult unless you create your own map, have an extremely good memory, or consult a FAQ.
In the puzzle category, my two favorites were Pipe Dream and Loopz. Both were fairly simple action-puzzle games with pretty minimalist presentations, but they were unique and surprisingly fulfilling.
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll
One of Rare's most unique and original titles on the NES that just doesn't get enough recognition. Not for the faint of heart, only for the Masochistic gamer I'd rank this one in terms of difficulty on par with many of the so called NES nasties such as Ghosts 'n goblins, adventure island, castlevania, Contra ect ect. If you've beaten Snake Rattle 'n Roll you sir are officially BAD dudes!
I could consistently get to the final "boss fight" in that game, but I could never beat it.
