Topic: Are you choosing to go Retro next gen?

Hello everyone. My name is AD3 (AD3Supa for long) and I am going retro next generation.

For my personal interests, I have little to no interest in the future of the gaming industry and the games that may be produced. Although things may very well change, if the types of games that are coming out now that count as "triple A" and "must buy" games are any indication of what is to come in the future, I cannot see myself buying and keeping up with games coming in the future.

That being said, there are still a lot of games on older systems that Wii's Virtual Console have helped me realize I want to give a go. I hope to one day have my very own Neo-Geo and Turbografix (although I'm willing to bet they are VERY expensive by now) and I hope to find a Super Nintendo at a yard sale or flea market that I can call my own! I know the world of retro gaming is also a very exciting one, and I'd love to see what it's like being a part of the retro gaming community!

That's my shortened and less detailed story, if you are like me and you are considering going retro for the next generation, give me a call at 555-Nin-erhm......

If you are considering going retro for the next generation like me, would you care to explain why?

Nope but I'm thinking of waiting ln the Wii U and in the mean time pick up a cheap wii for Vac and using GOG sales to start playing old pc games.

WAT!

I understand your frustration. Many of the "AAA" and "must have" games today are very derivative. If you look at E3 for example, there was but a few new games, while everything else was a sequel or prequel of some sort.

I have purchased lots of games using the Wii Virtual Console, and took advantage of being a member of the 3DS ambassador club. Unfortunately, many of my favorite games from the NES and SNES are not 1st Party Nintendo games.

If you truly wish to go retro and use the old machines and games, there are plenty of stores/kiosks in malls that market to this demographic (not to mention all over the internet). I am still mulling if I should be a NES/SNES combo device for 60 bucks to play the old games on that. I believe it is after 20 years (possibly 15) that you can start getting no name knock-offs that can play these older games.

I've frequently toyed with the idea, especially since Nintendo makes buying old school games sooo easy. But there are just far too many good games coming out, and many of the games I have the fondest memories of are never going to appear on VC. Why don't I just buy the old systems and games? I honestly, don't know. Just not my thing

I honestly had no idea that malls still targeted to retro gamers. I really do need to go to the mall this weekend and see what all they have happening!

Also, these responses have been pretty good so far! I will admit that there was one gem that I saw that made me think about my decision, Project P-100, but it's just not enough to get me to buy Wii U (mind you this may change as time goes by but, at the moment, I have little to no interest in picking up any next gen console).

I'm a gamer, so I like playing games whether they are new or retro. I do prefer retro games as I have a lot of nostalgia and great memories for them, but I think it's kind of silly to say I won't play any new games.

I don't see any reason for me to go "retro" next gen. I love old games just as much the next guy, but I won't ignore an entire generation of games. I'll still play retro games. What I won't do is skip pikmin 3 , Project whatever it's called, ZombiU and a bunch of new games. I plan on only buying a wii u next gen. That being said I still haven't seen a game that blows my mind for wii u.

I've been retro gaming my whole life. I'm still waiting to get a Wii and there are a whole bunch of GameCube games I've wanted to play since 2002 but I can't afford it thanks to being unemployed in one of the worst job markets in modern history. Will I be retro gaming next gen? Yes. Will I be retro gaming by choice? Well, I never get tired of any game and still play NES, SNES, and N64 stuff, but no, I am not not retro gaming purely by choice.

I'm getting my Wii U on day one.
I enjoy downloading and playing a VC game every now and then, but I tend to be playing new games about 99% of the time and I expect that to continue.

After you order a "new" game or console off Amazon/eBay, and they send you an empty box--you'll know exactly what it's like to be part of the retro gaming community. Have fun!

Nah, I'll stick to my usual blend of modern and retro, but leaning more towards the retro. It's been working out so far.

About what I am doing currently, it helps going retro between those periods of time were you are lacking AAA titles, plus you can buy a a whole lot of stuff for a minimal cost.

I don't enjoy retro games very much, but I haven't played many. Chrono Trigger is bloody brilliant though.

You could just go indie, since every other indie game tries to be a retro game anyway?

I will get a Wii U next gen but not another Playstation or Xbox. As for keeping it retro, I love my NES and SNES and like my Genesis and those will always take priority over any other console.

This - but not for the retro style, just for innovative gaming. I've recently been enjoying games like Limbo and Braid more than anything else. I guess you can say I'm going to be a PC gamer next generation, but not necessarily the high spec games (although if one comes along I like, I'll be sure to snap it up).

On the retro side of things, I have a huge GameCube and Wii collection that I need to play through. That's the main reason I decided against the Wii U actually - I have so many GameCube games I want to beat that I'm not willing to get rid of them and I only like to own one console. Other HD consoles have put me off with DLC, DRM and online passes etc. I'm not buying into all that. With my PC I can enjoy a game like Limbo and know I'll always be able to enjoy it into the future.
