I guess I won't be happy until they start making 4D games...

Since the 4th dimension is time, 4D games must be 3D games that allow you to time travel freely (preferably with real in-game consequences), making Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask among the first 4D video games.

I guess that technically also means that Sonic CD and Chrono Trigger are early 3D games.

Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.

Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.

The 4th dimension can technically be both time or a 4th axis...

If we're assuming that its time here, then true 4D movement would be the ability to move forwards and backwards in time seamlessly, which doesn't really describe any of the games you've mentioned. A better example would probably be something like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Well, I guess the Zelda games technically are 4D games, but they're not very good 4D games..

.... or something like that.

Depends on the type of game. When it comes to RPG's I prefer them to be 2D with mega-pretty pixel art but racing games are usually much better in 3D so it just depends on the genre.

I really enjoy awesome 2d games. The problem is that there are a lot of awful ones out there that just do not hold up today. I broke out my NES the other day for a nostalgia trip. I had a lot of fun with Mario games, castlevania, bionic commando, tiny toons, battle toads, super dodgeball (although it is incredibly glitchy) and caveman games (which would never get made today due to the un-PC attitude of such fantastic mini games like the mate toss ). The rest of my collection of NES games sucked... A lot. The original Metroid was awful (I'm sure that might not sit well with some), but vastly and dramatically improved with super metroid. Games today are often much more capable of reaching a level of gamer immersion than ones of the past. Also, RPG's like the original final fantasy (while challenging even by today's standards) have so much level grinding that it makes it difficult to hold ones attention without enducing fatigue. They both have ups and downs, and it's hard to give a definitive answer here. 2d games of old suffered from a lack of a story line and poor visuals. Games of today are often too easy. I know I'm rambling here, but I will make the final point that a good game is fun to play and will be forever.

That's why the Super NES is the best system for 2D games. It improved upon the NES in every aspect (graphics, game design, controller, music, sound, etc.).

That being said, I still prefer my 8-bit Mega Man. Those tunes sounded best on the NES.

You are right, that doesn't sit well with me. What is your reasoning for calling it awful?

I prefer 2D typically, but I grew up with it, though sometimes 3D is a total mind blower too so in either case it depends on the total package.

3D really does serve a really good purpose, but for some genres it's not so much terrible, but just not as great as it hampers the game play focus into getting baked by the camera or something. If you're doing a platformer for instance, they just work better in 2D as they're fast twitch gameplay, you don't want depth and cameras to kick your ass and same can be said usually with point and click stuff(scumm engine, rts stuff, fire emblem type sims), but if you're doing a FPS, flight type sim(space, whatever), driving...they tend to just work better with real depth over simulated with voxel pixels or whatever other tricks.

I prefer both, but I prefer one over the other depending on the genre of the game because sometimes being flat or 3D can hurt the part that matters most...quality smooth gameplay and control.

2D games. I prefer actually having 3D effects as opposed to not (3DS), but 2D games are where it was, is and always will be at for awesomeness. :3
3D games are better when being worked on a grand scale. The problem is that many games in 3D just dont seem large enough to demand it, which is one reason why I didnt enjoy Ocarina of Time 3D as much as I thought I would (didnt play the original).

@Ryno
I'm calling the original Metroid awful in retrospect. There are many games that hold up today really well. They have nice graphics, sound, stories, and are player friendly. When you play the original Metroid, there are non stop glitches. Bad guys and even walls appear and reappear due to bad coding (which was of course a product of its time). Also, there is annoying game slow downs. While trying to jump from one ledge to another, the whole game will suddenly drop frame rate immensely so that it appears that you are in slow motion. The use of codes as a save technique, while common in that era, is also rather frustrating. It was cool to see however, that you could still input the "Justin Bailey" code into the 3DS Ambassador version. For the time, the game was top notch and a marvel of what could be created. It also holds up as perhaps the most difficult 2D version of the game. As far as replayibility today, with an additional 25 years awesome of games out there, it may not be a top contender for a gamer's time. I know it isn't for me. Obviously you still find joy in it, I'm glad that it makes you happy!

Justin is old news, all about NARPASSWORD0000(fill rest w/zeros)

I think the common hatred Metroid gets is not so much the age but it's just too hard by todays pacified and wussed out standards, and it also doesn't have the helper map introduced to Super Metroid and any clone after which helps you greatly getting around not being lost.

It's also the time consuming health refills after death and the inability to shoot diagonally. Having significantly more ancient graphics than even Metroid 2 doesn't help its argument, either. It's still a pretty good game. It's just that several different facets of the game have been significantly improved by every other game in the series (including its own remake).

I can prove with mathematics that 3D is superior

If D = any number > 0, then 3D > 2D

Unless each extra dimension is considered a negative, in which case 2D > 3D.

I like both 2D and 3D. I'd say I play about as many 2D games as I play 3D ones, it's 50/50.

Well thanks to pixelman I can now mathematically prove that all people who like 2D more are negative thinkers

I think the SNES is the best game console ever so...I prefer 2D graphics. I would've thought the various indie games to come out on download services would've proved 2D can be as amazing and beautiful as 2D, yet there are still some closed minded folks who hate 2D. I like both just fine, and when I briefly owned a PS3 I loved the neat graphics, but I still love the 2D.

I think I might try to terminate my account. I'm not cut out for posting on forums lol
