As to NeoGeo, I really think SNK knew exactly what they were selling. They knew they were selling to rich diehard fans willing to pay for uncompromised ports of their arcade games.
They could not have seriously expected a mainstream audience to pay $200 each for their games. They even advertised the NeoGeo in a magazine ad by comparing it to a luxury car.
And if they did think a mainstream audience could be convinced to buy NG, they wouldn't have allowed their games to be ported to the other consoles on the market.
