Topic: Ys series

There is a franchise called Ys by Falcom who are known to be the longest running RPG company ever.

I'm surprised that no one here hasn't mentioned the series Ys over here. I beated Book 1 and am now in Book 2 and I really am starting to like the series.

This thread is about talking Ys and nothing else.
I gotta say, the score is amazing for this series. Gotta love Yuzo Koshiro.

There was this old thread, but it quickly died out ...

I'll just repeat what i said there: i absolutely love the Ys games. I've played through all of them (except for Celceta, since i don't have a Vita, and Dawn of Ys — interestingly enough, both are versions of Ys IV) multiple times (not counting the strategy game spin-off, which doesn't count in my mind). It's always hard for me to pick a favorite, though Felghana usually ranks towards the top. I actually like the original version of Ys III (Wanderers from Ys) a lot as well, and would also rank it fairly high.

And yes, the music in the all the games is phenomenal, especially in the original 2 games.

See? Now this is how you make a good thread.

Gotta agree with you here @Socar Ys is a really solid RPG series, makes me wish we could see a few of them on the 3DS as HD remakes or a collection.

It sucks that Ys isn't on Nintendo systems and when there are on them, the versions are worse than the others.

Now I want to know how well the series sells but I'm not able to find out the figures of it. Heck even Wikipedia doesn't even mention one.

Perhaps my only issue with it atleast when playing the first one is that these games are incredibly short in theory. But practically, it gives you the illusion that you are experiencing a traditional RPG which take a long time to beat....that's something really unique in game feel wise.

@the_shpydar: Celceta i believe is also on Windows.

@BinaryFragger: Yeah.....looking at the screenshots of the latest game makes me want to get the game.....feel like we Nintendo fans are sad that something like this can't happen for Nintendo platforms.

As for Game Sack, Yeah. I kinda wish we had Ys 3 ported to Steam and I don't care if we get the 2D one or the top down one. Just bring three to steam Xseed......

Odd as how Falcom doesn't seem to have any interest in localizing their games to the western market. They can easily beat the now lame Square Enix.

I wonder if Nintendo will one day look at Ys and perhaps make a Zelda spinoff that is kinda like Ys.

I've tried a few of them. The PSP and Vita ones to be exact. They were both very similar and quite average as far as I'd played.

The main problem was a lack of a good story. That really kills a JRPG for me. Maybe the stories developed into something good but they certainly didn't advertise that fact from the opening.

Still, I noticed that the next game on PS4 and Vita is going to be full 3D rather than fixed top-down camera. So I'll probably give that a try because I love exploring a properly 3D world.

Well, strictly speaking, there are plenty of Ys games on Nintendo systems. I, II and III were all released on Famicom, and III was released on SNES & SuperFami as well. IV and V were both released on SuperFami, and there are the (bad) versions of I & II on the DS. But i know what you mean, it would be nice if the more recent games had releases on Ninty systems.

By the way, i guess you're not aware, but Oath in Felghana is the remake of Ys III, and is available.

Also, Celceta was released for Windows, but only in China, i believe ... either way, my graphics-poor laptop has problems running even basic games well, so even if i could get it for Windows, i sadly wouldn't be able to run it until i get a new system. I do plan on eventually getting a Vita though (pretty much just for Celceta, lol).

@the_shpydar: Oh ok thanks!

Well after seeing the interview, I'm positive that it'll eventually come on Steam thanks to Xseeds.....hopefully.

Just beated Ys chronicles and I gotta say, I personally like Book 1 better simply because of its level structure being well balanced.

Book 2 is filled with mazes from the start of the game and I got a bit tired of that as it doesn't make it easy to go to certain paths and there's not much of side quests in Book 2 either so it didn't make the grinding any easy. But the story in Book 2 is a bit deep and it touched me when Maria died...... thank god she's alive!

Still I will agree that Book 2 is solid and it did fix some issues that Book 1 had like the ability to grind.

I want to ask you guys one thing. Which soundtrack you like in Chronicles? PC-88, Chronicles or Complete? I tried listening to Chronicles but nearly all the songs are composed with electric guitar and it all rock most of the time ruining the variety of instruments that the PC-88 had. I don't know how Complete sounds but I really love the PC-88 one.

Also, here are some screenshots of the latest game........It looks really good and I'm surprised that Falcom can do this good.

The third one is from the Vita and well honestly....its not horrible. I could get it if it shows up......assuming I get the Vita and assuming the game gets localized......

I know this is old, but I just thought I'd point out that Ys games are more about their gameplay than their story. They're more akin to Zelda, actually - storywise, they just repeat similar tropes and formulas, and recycle main characters. I mean, seriously, Adol the Red has been the messiah of no less than 5 religions by now, yet he apparently always losses his powers and ditches every single piece of equipment he obtained on his last adventure, usually because of his abysmal luck when traveling by sea. Don't expect anything utterly grand here. There will occasionally be some interesting twists and tweaks to the formula, and lots of snappy dialogue (Falcom is great at that, and I'm glad they got XSEED permanently signed on for their localizations), but I seriously wouldn't expect anything better than what you'd find in the 3D Zelda games. Ys is much more about the fast-paced action and puzzles, and the terrifically-designed boss battles. If you can focus on that, you're bound to have a good time.

I recently got turned on to Y's. I had Y's 7 Memories of Celceta on Vita, and I have Y's III, IV and V [SNES virtual console on 3DS] translated to English, but wanted Y's I and II for TG16. Unfortunately the TG16 virtual console injects on 3DS don't support the disc games, so I thought I was out of luck. Until...

I noticed the games sold on PSN on Vita. Both a remake of Y's I and II, plus 2 other Y's games for PSP. SO I bought them all and I'm extremely happy. Now I have all games in the series, except for the new Y's VIII Lacrimosa of Dana. I hope they localize it.

@CanisWolfred
That's actually a good description/comparison. Much like Zelda, the Ys games do have decent stories (with Ys III being IMO the best, especially the expanded story told through the Felghana version of the game), but they're definitely much more of a set-up/background aspect to the exceptional gameplay.
