Topic: Your Top 9 Indie/Small Team Games You're Excited For?

Posts 1 to 13 of 13

CanisWolfred

Titled as such because I am kind of annoyed that people lump in "Indie" with anything made by a small team, regardless of the actual publisher...

Also 9 because.

Oh, and all platforms apply.

Anyways, guess I'll start:

9. Mighty No. 9 - Because I always wanted to see what Inafune was capable of with Mega Man if he wasn't hindered by Capcom. Need to see more, though, and the release date is a long way off...
8. Axiom Verge - I'm a sucker for the sprites and the Metroid-ish style.
7. Hover: Revolt of Gamers - The game seems to ooze style even early in development. Hoping the finished product will be a blast.
6. Citizens of Earth - It's no secret I like RPGs, and this one takes a more comedic approach while also looking solid mechanics-wise.
5. Heart Forth, Alicia - Dat Art! Dat SotN-style gameplay!
4. Night in the Woods - Warning! Gush alert! I was sold on this game from the very beginning of its trailer, and not just because of the animal people. There's just something about the tone of it - the themes the characters, and dialogue I was able to gather from what was presented just really struck a cord with me. I have a feeling I'll love it, story-wise. Only problem is the gameplay sounds a little boring. Run around, explore stuff, do random $#!+ until you die. It's a very story-focused adventure game, apparently, so hopefully the gameplay won't be too much of a bother, or at least fits enough with the story so what your doing feels necessary.
3. Azure Striker Gunvolt - It's more done than M#9, and it looks like they're emulating my favorite Mega Man series, so needless to say I'm excited.
2. Hyper Light Drifter - I really am a sucker for good art, but this game looks fantastic all around, and I'm hoping it gets all the polish it needs to be a great game.
1. No Man's Sky - I still hold that Mass Effect is the RPG series I always wanted my entire life, but this is the sci-fi exploration game I also wanted right down to the very last detail. I can hardly contain my excitement!

Honorable Mentions:

Omori - I really need to see more, but I'm really excited for a surreal experience kinda game, and it's also a horror RPG, which is rare but has been done well in the past. It could go a million different ways, though, so I'll wait 'n' see...
Teslagrad - Would be high on the list if it wasn't technically out on PC. I'm still waiting for that console release, though. <_<
Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition - A rerelease, so I won't count it just yet, but it looks great.
Crapload of other games that I don't have time to list.

I'll try and see if I can wrap up 9...

9. Trails in the Sky: Ok, so this doesn't really count but it's an indie outfit localising a Falcom game for Steam. And I've enjoyed all of Carpe Fulgur's work so far, and I'm doubly excited because Falcom

8. Shovel Knight: It just looks like there's so much to do in this game, that it makes me want to forgive it for the NES style gameplay.

7. Omori: So yeah, there's not a lot of info about it but the premise is one of the most interesting things I've seen in a while.

6. 0 A.D.: The developers of Age of Empires team up and make a freeware historical RTS? This is going to be amazing. The only problem with this game is that the developers are such history buffs that they're giving each civ a ton of unique units and research to play around with. Game balance is going to be difficult.

5. Mardek Chapter 4: A freeware JRPG - no wait, don't go, hear me out! The episodic nature of the game actually makes it more adaptable to my schedule, and it's refreshingly devoid of conflict for the sake of conflict. It's also based heavily on the Four Temperaments - the developer is a people watcher and it really shows in his writing. I don't think he has plans to work on this at the moment though.

4. Perfect Stride: Somebody decided to combine FPS surfing with a skateboarding game. And it's crazy psychedelic too.

3. A Bird Story: The interquel for To The Moon. The soundtrack is wonderful (it's up on the dev's Bandcamp site right now) and I hope the story's as good as the first game was.

2. Shelter 2: The first Shelter was fantastic, and it managed to make the player really emotional just from atmosphere and music. And Shelter 2 stars wolves!

1. Kentucky Route Zero Acts IV and V: I'm just curious to see where the story's going to go now. The team's made an interesting mystery and has left hints that they actually know what they're doing with it, so I'm excited.

honourable mentions: No Man's Sky, because it looks like it'll be incredible. It's just not my kind of game though.

Shovel Knight
Road Redemption
Gunlord (I have it on Dreamcast but its annoying connecting it up each time).
Unreal Tournament (Not sure what the team size is like or what the F2P model will be like cannot imagine it is a massive team because it would have to be paid for).
Pier Solar HD

(I see too may things that look good and turn out not to be. The Megaman alike games it depends if they have more in common with Megaman X or not).

Hard to pick. But I'll be focusing only on indie titles coming to Wii U since that's practically the only system I play these days.

9. Two Brother's Director's Cut: I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that this version will fix its problems.
8. Omori: I can't put this too high just because they've shown relatively little and it was gonna be a success just because a popular internet person is responsible but it is really fascinating to me.
7. Super Hot: I like weird new takes on FPS, and time only moving when you do seems pretty great. A lot of cool time stuff with that.
6. Mighty No. 9: A new Megaman essentially. It makes me happy.
5. Hack n Slash - It's Zelda for coding nerds. Awesome awesome awesome.
4. Boothill Heroes: Spaghetti Western co-op Earthbound inspired RPG. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.
3. Hover: Revolt of Gamers: Yes.
2. Shovel Knight: If I can rip off a review of Cave Story I remember with slightly different wording "This is the best game from 1990. The fact that it's coming out in 2014 shouldn't be a point against it."
1. No Man's Sky: If this fully lives up to expectations, this could be the next Minecraft, not even kidding. And it isn't about crafting so I think it would appeal to me way more and it is. Even if it didn't, I am astounded by this game and I need to experience it.

6) Dungeon of the Endless - Already had some good fun with the alpha. It's got some interesting gameplay, and the full version looks like its going to have a lot of replay value.
5) Shovel Knight - Because its made like a classic NES Castlevania or Mega Man game, except with a shovel. Also its looking great.
4) Stardew Valley - Very much inspired by Harvest Moon, I see it as an evolution of that series which I lost a lot of fondness for over the years. Only a one man project, here's hoping he can pull it off.
3) Project Zomboid - Already quite far along, once this is finished it'll be an amazing game. That might take a while, but I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of it.
2) Paradise Lost: First Contact - A game that looks like its going to have a very engaging story, fun puzzle solving with multiple solutions, and nice art.
1) Starbound - Currently in Beta phase, but I am very much looking forward to being able to play the finished version. Such large scope, great multiplayer potential, and again, nice pixel art.

Heart Forth Alicia and Witchmarsh also both look amazing, but I haven't looked into them yet. I've got to stop putting faith in games just because they have beautiful pixel art. Thank god I follow Chucklefish though, because it seems they do the same. '>.>

EDIT: I also forgot about Hotline Miami 2, so I guess that makes 9.

Some good ones being mentioned here. I certainly hope they fix the problems weith Two Brothers, because it looks like a really interesting game.
Paradise Lost: First Contact was one I was really considering listing. It looks really interesting, but I think it's more of a Metroidvania? I had enough on my list, so I didn't list it.
Same with Chasm, otherwise it'd be high on my list.
Cosmic Star Heroine is also a good one, and I'm glad someone else is looking forward to Night in the Woods.
I almost forgot about Earthlock, but I figured one RPG was enough.
Glad to see Jollykarp listing a lot of ones I haven't heard of before.

I see a lot of people are looking forward to Shovel Knight. Maybe I should look into that one. I'm not overly fond of NES-style platformers, though.

Okay, finally checked out Spelunky, it looks pretty cool.

Also looked at some trailers of Shovel Knight and now I'm pretty interested. If it can hold true to its "balanced difficulty" claim, I think I might like it.
