Just saw another reason why I hate the AppStore/iStore.
Gives people the chance to capitalize on other people's games by cloning them, pretty sad actually. What's worse is that its flat out rewarded with money by people who do/don't care or know better.
Its one thing to say, I was inspired by this and improved upon it, but another to just flat out copy another game.
As an (amateur) game developer it kind of makes me frustrated that people are fine with this.
Sigh... What's your stance on the issue?
I don't have a huge issue for it unless you're making money off of it. And even then, it annoys me more for its laziness more than anything. For example, I like to praise Zelda-likes a lot but it isn't just because I love Zelda. It's because taking the Zelda formula and making something completely new out of it is what most of the Zelda-likes have been doing and so it's been more fantastic titles, not more titles that are exactly the same as the games I already play.
of course Apple would be screwed by now if they took responsibility for their own App store because they'll let any garbage on there unless someone with a copyright complains
also most of the iOS ripoffs are garbage because iOS is less a gaming platform and more a waste of time if you want your games to succeed while simultaneously having dignity
A direct clone - like say that web version of Super Mario Bros ?
One of the first things Nintendo did was an unlicensed pong clone. (And they improved from there).
That humble bundle game that was released as open source (With the assets under a different license) then uploaded by a 3rd party on the appstore I am totally against stuff like that.
Same with emulators on Android that use snes9x (License is non commercial use only - adware or a paid app is commercial use).
“30fps Is Not a Good Artistic Decision, It's a Failure”
Freedom of the press is for those who happen to own one.
I remember getting into a huge argument with a friend of mine on this issue. She thinks it's completely ok for people to steal other games and make a rip-off versions of them for smartphones so long as they're free or cheaper. She was all "No one's gonna buy some dumb device specifically for the real Super Mario and pay like $50 when I can download like 100 games that play exactly like it for free."
if the "clone" is different enough(in gameplay mechanics, different aesthetics don't make it less of a clone) there's no problem, in ancient times this kind of thing was considered a sign of appreciation more than a shameless steal.
but when it's almost the exact same game but with different looks it's a bad clone that shouldn't be supported.

Do I play them? No. Do I look down upon people for playing them or making them? No. So I guess I'm indifferent towards it.
Remember that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If you're a developer and you see a thousand clones of your game on the App/Play stores then you know that your game made it big time. No one wants to clone terrible game that didn't sell.

well, if clone games could at least mention what they're copying it could be interesting, maybe people would buy the original just to see what it's about...

I'll use Dance Dance Revolution as an example. Pump It Up changed the format to include 5 panels and harder songs, and the defunct (damned lawsuits) In The Groove series took the DDR formula and improved upon it in every way possible. The clone wins.
Another example would be Rock Band SORT OF being a clone of Guitar Hero (with moving companies), which is most definitely a clone of GuitarFreaks and DrumMania. With each clone the formula got better and better.
Even ROM hacks of retro games sometimes improve upon the original, usually they don't though.
I can't think of any example where a clone doesn't improve on past formulas, but if it is of inferior quality, I'll judge it on quality more than originality.
This is a signature.

Screw you.
It depends. Alot of improvements are made by taking an existing formula and altering it, or taking inspiration from something in general. Games like that Pokemon platformer that charge $99 to play as Squirtle or whatever are beyond stupid, though.
Little Dew, for example, is ok, because there is actual quality and such.
