Topic: Your Opinion of the Little Big Planet Series?

Hello All

I've gotten into gaming recently; I love my Wii U and 3DS and I'd I am quite fond of Nintendo games in general. My favourite character is Kirby and my favourite games have been thus far "Kirby's Epic Yarn", "Kirby's Return to Dream Land", "Super Mario 3D World" and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze.

While out picking up some more games at the store the sales assistant asked me if I had ever played "Little Big Planet". I assume he saw the games I had picked up and guessed I liked platformers. I replied no I hadn't as I didn't have a PlayStation and he directed my attention to this PlayStation 4 Little Big Planet 3 bundle. I looked at it for a bit and then left with my Wii games.

What are your thoughts on Little Big Planet? I'm not saying they are the same but it reminds me slightly of "Kirby's Epic Yarn" and gosh I love that game. I would really like to know your opinion of the the series, I know you can't speak of the new game yet but the first two.

It annoys me that the I would have to buy a PlayStation 3 to play the first two games and a PlayStation 4 for the new one. Thanks very much for your time.

From what I understand its a good game especially if you are into stuff like making your own levels and such. From what I have heard the third game will be able to pull users made stuff from the previous 2 LBP as well as its own game,

I can't really give an honest opinion since I never played the other two since I didn't have a PS3 last gen but I do want to at least try LBP3 since I have a PS4,

I've played the first LBP. It's a good time waster. If you like creating your own levels, it's a great game.

It's a good tool box, but the physics are floaty and inconsistant, which as a platformer is unforgivable. I simply cannot stand playing it when it actually requires me to jump or move between planes, which the singleplayer does a lot of. If you want to play user-generated content, it's probably great, especially the not-platformer ones. Just don't go in expecting a decent singleplayer platformer...

I was absolutely obsessed with it at some point. But it's sorta grown a bit stale to me(?)

I mean, I still like it, but it's sorta just there. Isn't there like a 3rd one that just came out?

I must say I am disappointed but I'd rather you were honest and am grateful for that. I will still wait to hear from others and do a bit more snooping around but it's not worth spending £400 possibly £600 if I wanted to go back and play the first two games and not get a decent single player platform game. After all that is what I thought was being offered.

There are a few other games exclusive titles on the system I am interested but if Little Big Planet is not substantial enough to keep me coming back then can't see the PlayStation getting much use compared to the Wii U.

Thanks again all your helps is always most welcome.

To be fair, the PS3 has Puppeteer, which is by far the better platformer. But yeah, there aren't as many quality 2D or 3D platformers that you can't get on the Wii U, but there's enough of almost anything else (well, I find the JRPGs on thePS3 lacking, but the good ones are fantastic, and there are still more than on the Wii U).

Alone it blows. It's all about stage creation and playing with other people. I personally didn't like online that much - It's a game best enjoyed with friends/family in one room. With online, it's most of the time 3 silent dudes rushing through the stage or total aholes.

In other words, if you want single player platformer, LBP3 looks like a pretty bad choice. You can enjoy it alone, of course, but it would be like buying Battlefield to play single player.

It's not bad, I had the first game for the PSP and I liked it. It certainly wasn't perfect and I would give it a B- in-terms of enjoyment, but it was nothing that would ever convince me to switch back over to Sony. I've been burned too many times by them between going through over a dozen PS2's over the course of 10 years and the absurd cost of the PS3 when it launched and lack of enjoyable titles during its first few years.

Anyways Little Big Planet is a solid little title that I would recommend if you own a Sony console.

If you're just looking to play a good single player platformer, I don't think it's worth it. It's the level editor where the game shines.

Puppeteer does look fun (lots of fun actually) I'd never of it before you mentioned it your always so helpful. I also checked Little Big Planet 3 is on the PlayStation 3 so I could avoid buying the PlayStation 4 and get all 3 games for the 3. As for other types of games I haven't really played much I have RPGs on my to buy list for the Wii/U but haven't bought any yet (expect Zelda?). I'm not really interested in shooters or sports games, fighting games may be fun but would it be worth buying another system I don't know.

I'm watching a "Let's Play" of Little Big Planet 3 at the moment and the Story Mode does look rather dull don't know what to do maybe I'll try and find a demo at the video game store in town...

Thanks although single player is my main focus I am interested in the level maker to. There are also other games on the PlayStation I fancy I can't get on the Nintendo platforms however I'm not sure they have the longevity of the Nintendo titles. I thought Little Big Planet would be the exception but I am less keen now than when I started the thread having read the replies and seen some footage on YouTube of the newest game. Thanks for your input as always.

I have only played LBP a little. While it is a fun game I don't think the mechanics are as solid as I am use to. The jumping always feels off to me

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

A demo would be great, since then you can see whether or not you'd handle the mechanics. The singleplayer level-design-wise gets gets better as it goes, but the basics remain the same, and that's where I personally felt it was most flawed.

The first two games on PS3 are great. They also did two very good handheld versions on PSP or Vita, but if you only play your handhelds at home, there's not really any reason to get those. They're more for playing the game out and about. I've not played the PS4 version, but I get the impression it's a bit like Arkham Origins. The original developer, Media Molecule, has moved onto making new games, but they brought in another developer to continue the series. That developer is Sumo Digtal who are fantastic, but still, the game feels just more of the same, which is probably exactly what they were told to do. It's not bad, but doesn't really push things forward.

I wouldn't buy a PS4 just for it, that's for sure, but a PS3 is a fantastic buy right now. Fairly cheap, and a huge library of great games that can be bought pre-owned for very, very cheap. The PS3 Ratchet games are great, and so is Sly Racoon 4. Sounds like maybe you never had a PS2, in which case picking up the Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter and Sly Racoon HD trilogies would give you 9 very, very good 3D platformers.

Hi @Peach64 thank you for your thoughts those are exactly the "other" games I was thinking about as I didn't have a PlayStation of any kind previously They look fun and I'm sure I would enjoy I'm not sure if it justifies a new console purchase. The money isn't the problem as you say they are cheap now it's more how once those games are done will the PlayStation 3 get used? I would buy "Journey Collectors Edition", "Puppeteer" as mentioned by @CanisWolfred and possibly some 2D fighters not available on the Wii U.

It's tempting I'm sure they'd be more and perhaps that would be enough for some but I don't know if it has the ability to compete with the Wii U for me at least. I already have almost 40 games for the Wii and Wii U and several for my 3DS.

I didn't like it at all. The game by itself became boring very fast, and while the creator mode has a lot of appeal to make up for that, I found it lame nonetheless. Also, the sackboys were forgettable for an attempt at creating a Sony mascot. But that's just my personal view.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the artstyle or the way you have to switch between planes. It's not a beat-em-up, that mechanic doesn't work in a platformer but I digress. The best thing about the games is seeing all the cool levels people have built, and trust me, some of them are pretty crazy.

@Kaze_Memaryu I liked the sack puppets I think their cute but everyone has their own opinion.

Although the other games CanisWolfred and Peach64 mentioned are appealing as well. I've just come across "Mario Maker" and I know this is likely not news for most if not all of you who will be reading this thread but I am newer than most I imagine. It doesn't provide a new series to play it does satisfy part of my interest in "Little Big Planet" with it's own level creator and I'm sure as it's a Mario game the platforming will be solid. Maybe I'll just wait for it to be released and dream of "Kirby's Epic Yarn 2"...
