Peek-a-boo

It's that time of the year where you temporarily swap writing a penned shopping list for a list of your favourite games of this year!

Usually I wait until the New Year, but where's the fun in talking about last years games in a (hopefully) brighter new year?

The remaining two big games are Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian, both of which share something unique; a troubled but visionary development over a period of almost a decade.

There's nothing stopping anybody from adding those two to their favourites once you have played them through to the end.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here's mine:

01) The Last Guardian (Fumito Ueda does it again; an unforgettable experience like no other)
02) The Witness (as someone who isn't fond of puzzles, this was a genuine surprise!)
03) Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
04) ABZÛ
05) Dark Souls III
06) Firewatch (Henry & Delilah are two of the most believable characters in a videogame yet)
07) Titanfall 2
08) INSIDE
09) Ratchet & Clank
10) Headlander (when a 70's Sci-Fi comedy meets Super Metroid for a light lunch)

A nice even split of indie and big studio games.

Honourable mentions to Virginia, Unravel, Street Fighter V, Rez Infinite (especially on the PlayStation VR), No Man's Sky, Hyper Light Drifter (all thanks to Kickstarter!) Gravity Rush Remastered, DOOM (had a tough time excluding this from my top ten), Battlefield 1, Alone With You and Alienation.

________________________________________________________________________________________________

My biggest disappointment of the year goes to Mirror's Edge Catalyst.

Those of whom made the decision to go down the 'open world' route are not only blooming idiots, but it was also a decision that has resulted in a now dead-and-buried series.

I enjoyed a handful of the story missions and some of the areas were visually and aesthetically pleasing however, the overall game felt disjointed, soulless and has arguably the most irredeemably abrupt ending ever.

Over to you guys!

And seasons greeting to you all too, courtesy of when Rare used to be good:

Hmm.. Let's see..

1. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
2. The Witness
3. Hyper Light Drifter
4. Gravity Rush Remastered
5. Paper Mario: Colour Splash
6. Firewatch
7. ABZÛ
8. Pokkén Tournament
9. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
10. Grow Up

Difficult for sure, was surprised I played more than 10 games this year! Honourable mention goes to Unravel, a good game, but it didn't make the list unfortunately. I played Dark Souls III, but I don't own the game myself, so I didn't include it in my top 10. I'll adjust the list once I've played TLG, but I think that's going to be a high one on the list. Also opted not to include The Witcher 3, cause it was just DLC we got this year and I haven't played the DLC yet.

Anyway, Uncharted was an absolute masterpiece, loved every of it, but The Witness could've been in Uncharted's place as well. An absolutely brilliant game, from a level design and gameplay perspective, I don't think it gets much better than this. Discovering the hidden layers in that game was an absolute joy. I really enjoyed HLD too, shame it never got a Wii U release, cause it's a pretty good game. I'm not a big fan of fighting games, but Pokkén Tournament surprised me this year. I'm still unsure about the 60 bucks I spend on it, but I hope to play it some more. I'm wondering if we'll ever get those DLC characters that Japan is getting.. TP is on the list cause the original game was/is still a masterpiece. I thought the remaster was a bit lazy to be honest, didn't really look that much better in my opinion..

Anyway, I'll get back to this list in a week or two!

Although I've done a lot of gaming this year, I don't feel I've played many of this year's games.

The two stand-out games for me are Uncharted 4 and Pokemon Sun/Moon, neither of which I have completed yet! Both games are as good as their already fantastic predecessors while adding a few new things to the table.

Pokken, Yokai Watch and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth get honourable mentions as I really enjoyed those, although critically I don't see them as GOTY material.

I've yet to play Ratchet & Clank and Final Fantasy XV but I have high hopes for those.

I haven't brought or played many games that were released in 2016, but I sure have played some fantastic games that are new to me. The award would go to three very fantastic games, The Thousand Year Door, Super Paper Mario and Partners in Time. I'm also playing Spirit Tracks and, wow... I'm just keep getting flooded by nostalgia from Phantom Hourglass (which I thought was a phenomenal game). It's safe to say I'm gonna enjoy it really well.
There's also the Portal games which are beyond excellent and filled with this other-worldly but whimsical charm. Not to mention Pikmin 3 which I finished this year.
Mentions go to: Pokken Tournament, Star Fox Zero (yes, that game), and some couple of games I'm forgetting.
So this year wasn't filled with exciting new releases (for me), but it has been a great year!!

I really liked Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice and Kirby: Planet Robobot. Zero Time Dilemma was a bit disappointing but still good.

Doom, Dark Souls 3, Overwatch, Fire Emblem Fates, Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Spirit of Justice, Inside, Bioshock Collection, Grow Up, Pokken Tournament, Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2. There will probably be others that I'll get round to eventually- not least the new Pokémon games- but those are my standouts that I've really enjoyed this year.

Overwatch probably the overall GoTY for me.

And I feel No Man's Sky deserves a mention, I haven't played it myself though I do intend to, but for all that that game represents I feel it shouldn't be merely forgotten about or treated with disdain. Some of the most entertaining meltdowns and YouTube 'controversy' videos I've seen, culminating in people being called literally thieves for getting refunds of the game when it was in an unquestionably broken state. Lessons should be learned from that game but when I was seeing people writing virtually essays explaining why they were furious at someone who's copy of the game crashed 6 times in an hour expecting a refund I just couldn't help but laugh and thank Hello Games for dragging all this out and hopefully people do learn their lessons so that when the next revolutionary game is being hyped we maintain some level of composure.

I doubt it though.

Great year in my opinion.

So far...

1) Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse (possibly the most fun I've had with a game this generation)

2) Pokemon Sun and Moon (still not done with this, so my opinion could change, but so far it's my favorite set of Pokemon games since Black and White)

3) Kirby: Planet Robobot (short, but very, very sweet)

4) Zero Time Dilemma (not as good as the previous two games, but still a ZE game and still enthralling from beginning to end)

5) Fire Emblem: Fates (characters and plot range from decent to terrible across the three different 'routes,' but the gameplay (apart from the My Castle thing), map design, music, and visuals are undoubtedly top notch)

Still need to play more of Tokyo Mirage Sessions to know if it'll end up as one of my favorite games this year. I'll update this list in December.

Probably Overwatch, Starcraft 2, Pokemon Alpha Sapphire. They didn't come out this year but they are what I played the most this year, so those are my Games of the Year

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

1. Uncharted 4
2. Dark Souls 3
3. Witcher 3 Blood and Wine
4. Fire Emblem Fates
5. Trails of Cold Steel

I suspect FF15 and Titanfall 2 will squeeze into that list after I've got round to playing them. Although I may struggle to finish them both before DQ8 comes out, which will probably consume all of my time!

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

My Games of the Year for me are Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and Pokemon Sun/Moon (Yeah, I'm a Nintendo only gamer). Specially TMS, I don't need ultra dark, gritty or edgy stories - the visuals, the music, and its rock solid gameplay make it definitively a great game, overlooked just by prejudices which is a shame.

My biggest disappointment of the year is Fire Emblem Fates. When it was announced, the games' premise was wonderful, experiencing war from both sides and changing Nohr from inside, destroying Garon's reign.... Then we get excess of waifus, the true ending being locked behind DLC and Conquest! Corrin being a little spineless wretch. They promised too much and delivered too little.
Gameplay in Conquest is good, though, I'll admit that.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Having picked up a PS4 alongside some potential PS4 gems, I feel like I'm going to be making more edits and additions to my list (actually no... I'll probably finish the games next year or play the games enough by next year, which is out of this context). Not to mention that I also picked up Pokemon Sun, but I don't think it'll be that epic and groundbreaking for me as everyone seems to make it sound to be. On the topic of 3DS games I just remembered I started playing Fire Emblem Conquest a while back, and so far it's pretty great although I'll have to play more to make a better judgement.
And how could I forget Tokyo Mirage Sessions? I haven't played the game myself (do I need to? My brother once did a 12 hour playthrough of the game. I'm not even joking), but from what I've seen it's a solid but niche RPG with a fantastic soundtrack.

God first.

Doom is definitely a contender. Just excuse of how much of a surprise it turned out to be. When I played it, it was exactly what a modern version of Doom felt like it should be. It wasn't bogged down by modern AAA nonsense, at least when it comes to the campaign. There were legitimate secrets to find and the gameplay was as smooth as butter. It's definitely one of the top three for me, at least.

I forgot about Hitman (which I'm actually still playing so that was stupid to forget about), Far Cry Primal, The Witcher 3 Blood & Wine (which definitely counts damn it), TLoZ Twilight Princess HD, PAC-MAN Championship Edition 2 and Pony Island (look it up if you don't know about it, it's worth anyone's 2-3 hours who want a one-of-a-kind game).

And I'm also really enjoying Titanfall 2 so pencil that in as a 'probably'.

Didn't really play anything new this year, other than Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright (3DS), so my list will be comprised of games from years gone by.

10. Jack n' Jill (Android) - a level based Gameboy inspired platformer desined for mobile (you can do everything with one tap). It has a boatload of levels, and gets really tough later on as you need to time your taps with pixel perfect precision. As a bonus, it's truly free.

9. Kirby's Dreamland 2 (3DS VC) - This was pretty decent, but I just wasn't feeling "it". Even the animal buddies didn't really go over well with me.

8. My Nintendo Picross: the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (3DS eShop) - Hey, this one released this year, too! There's not much to it, but Picross is always a pleasant time, and the Zelda theme sure is nice.

7. Dokuro (Android) - Puzzle platformer that sees you playing as a little skeleton who betrays the Dark Lord and escort the imprisoned princess out of the castle. It's a bit different, but good.

6. Super Dangerous Dungeons (Android) - A free mobile game that's actually free! A level based platformer with traditional controls that somehow work on mobile that has SNES inspired graphics. It's actually quite good.

5. Front Mission Evolved (360) - Mech action game that's a bit rough around the edges, but I enjoyed my time with it. It's just plaun fun going around blasting things in a giant robot.

4. Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary (360) - Never been big into FPS, but I finally decided to try out Halo and am glad I did. There's some repetitiveness in there later on (mostly due to it's age), and that ending driving section can go to heck, but I actually had a really fun time blasting my way through it.

3. Shantae & the Pirate's Curse (3DS eShop) - Not terribly long, but it's a great "Metroidvania" with charming characters & fantastic art direction (it's the only game in years I've played 3D on the entire time, and no, it's not because of the character art), with a challenge that's stiff, but fair.

2. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - My earliest bought game of the year. Smash has always been a game I can kick back with when I have nothing else to do, so it's great to have a portable version. It didn't blow me away in any measure, but it's stayed in my card slot almost the entire year (with a few bouts a day, guaranteed), so that has to count for something.

1. Tales of Vesperia (360) - My second Tales game after playing Abyss on 3DS. Just a great JRPG that I spent the Spring months with. It's about tied with Abyss, as there are things about it I like more, but some things less. Both are fantastic, though.

I am going to stick with games that came out this year and since I didn't play too many that came out this year my list will be short.

1. Overwatch — Blizzard did it again. Took a game that is easy to pick up and provides hours of fun. It's a game that anyone can play nit just FPS. If you are into healing they have that, into high defense tank characters they have them. I don't play it all the time but it's one game that I keep coming back to again and again. That's why it's my GOTY.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered — Now I will say, I never played CoD 4 so I really don't have anything to compare this too. But this is what CoD should be. Boots on the ground planning out your shots, not running around on walls and flying through the air. Not only that, but they have also added stuff that weren't in the original like game modes, camos etc. I will be spending alot of time with this one.

3. Mafia III — It's been a long time since a games story hooked me the way Mafia III's did. That and what Mafia II brought this game did it better which is why it's on my list.

Other then that not too many games that came out this year that I played. I did play alot of older console games like

Soul Caliber — Dreamcast (Which still holds up really well)
Double Dragon — Genesis
Ghouls N Ghosts — Genesis

And even managed to play and enjoy Journey on PS4 yesterday. But since those games didn't come out this year I don't include them in a GOTY.

Same. I think the only game I've played that was released this year is Pokemon Sun, and I know it's not good enough for GotY.

Overwatch
Hyper Light Drifter

And then Street Fighter V, followed by Alone With You, and Fallout 4. Those are the only new games I played this year, and if I'm being honest:

  • SFV screwed the pooch at launch, and they've yet to apply enough calamine lotion to make up for it.
  • Alone With You could not have been more boring if it tried.
  • Fallout 4 was a total waste of my time and money.

I need to really work on what I spend my money on next year, and more importantly, better manage what I spend my time on. I probably have faaaaaaar better games than those sitting on my shelf, but I got too distracted by other things for me to get to them, so I played whatever I was super-hyped for...and that almost never ends well...

EDIT: Oh, I also started Dragon Quest 7, but I got so intimidated by its sheer size that I put it down before I ever got far enough to say I had an opinion of it.

1. Forza Horizon 3
2. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
3. Ratchet & Clank
4. Gears of War 4
5. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
6. MLB The Show 16
7. DOOM
8. Watch Dogs 2
9. Titanfall 2
10. The Division

That's my list for now but I did just buy Final Fantasy XV. Only about 5 hours in but based on first impressions I think it will probably knock The Division off the list and at least a couple other games down the list. Don't see it coming close to cracking my Top 5, however.

As someone that's never played a Ratchet and Clank game (I was more of a Jak and Daxter fan), do you guys think the PS4 game would be up my alley? I saw it for $10 on sale, almost bit the bullet on that one. I ask since it seems to be on many people's lists in some way.
