Scroll down on the right side.
There are small pictures of each level on the bottom and you can click on them for a large detailed level view.
This helped me a lot finding all those secret areas and extra lifes.

this thread reminds me that I need to play more Genesis games. At least half of the ones I played are just Sonic Mega Collection.
Despite owning NSO Expansion Pack, where I could fix this immediately, I've played exactly one Genesis game that I hadn't before since I made this post 8 years ago (Gunstar Heroes on 3DS, in case you want to know).
@kkslider5552000 that had some nice 3Deffect. Those 3D remasters are amazing to me. Sad that type of programming for older games probably won’t come around again
