Topic: Your Favorite Rpg Series Or Rpg Game

Favourite series I would have to go with the Tales games. Favourite game I would say Super Mario RPG.

My game library ranges from Mario Kart to Call of Duty to Tales of Xillia to Diablo 3 to Forza. To me gaming is about having fun - not blindly supporting only one company while thumbing your nose at "the evil other systems."

Star Ocean actually gets my vote for least favorite series, if only because it feels like wasted potential. The first game was a completely broken mess, and the remake, while significantly more playable, feels like a poor man's Star Ocean 2...which in itself was just a (good) Tales clone with Planet-hopping...and sadly, it was made before Tales itself had refined its battle system, so its combat left a lot to be desired. Not sure if the remake was any better in that regard (reading the wiki makes it sound like it got improved by a lot, though). The third game was one of the worst RPGs I've ever played, but I've said enough on that one plenty of times before, so I'll just say it's the epitome of missed opportunities in my eyes.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope was the best in the series, though, at least for me. The gameplay was fun, and there were lots of little things I greatly appreciated. It reminded me how Tri-Aces fixed nearly every complaint I personally had with Valkyrie Profile in its sequel (making it the most polar series for me. First game is terrible, second game is fantastic. Third game is middle of the road. Maybe not polar, but every end of the spectrum, at least), except the writing. The writing's still terrible, Tri-Aces will never be good at telling stories. But I think even they know that by now, which is why they give you summaries every time you skip a cutscene, meaning you don't actually have to pay attention to the story anymore. I'd also say they stopped trying to have a good story for most of TLH and just had some fun most of the time. Only middle where admittedly I had to stop felt like they were trying, and honestly...I'm glad they did. That part was genuinely interesting.

I'm talking about the part where they go to another timeline, where the Nazi's took over the world, but they think they've gone into the past in Roswell New Mexico and their ship gets taken for research. The whole last third was mind-blow after mind-blow. The part afterwords where they blow up the Earth in that timeline and then whatshisface won't get over it even when they get back to their timeline was stupid, though, and I had to stop during that part because it was getting to the point of near parody...

...okay, maybe not least favorite RPG series, just a very polar one. That said, even at their best the games aren't anymore than "good". They're still riddled with flaws and overambition that they clearly do not have the skills to impliment, but I can certainly think of series I like less at the end of the day...Phantasy Star, for instance. The first game was great, but the second and third were terrible, some of the worst I've played. I still need to give the 4th game a fair shot, so I can't count it one way or another just yet. PSO episodes 1, 2 and 4 were great, but episode 3 was pretty meh. PSU was okay for a while, but got stale. Same with PS Portable, PS Portable 2, and PS Zero. Really wish we had gotten PSP2: Infinity, if only because I think the additions would've increased its longevity. PSO2 looks incredible but I'll never get to play it at this rate...

And then there's the SaGa franchise. I liked every game I played - Final Fantasy Legends 2 & 3, SaGa Frontier 1 and 2, and Romancing SaGa...well, almost all of them. Unlimited SaGa was awful. SaGa Frontier was also awful, but I could still glean some enjoyment from it. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, though. I still need to play FFL1 (no point, though), Romancing SaGa 2 and 3 (gotta wait for them to get translated...), and the DS remakes of FFL2 and 3. Ironically, except for FFL1, those are supposed to be the best in the franchise, so says the Japanese speaking fans...

Have you tried any of the multitude of clones both new and old before?

Probably. To what in particular are you referring?

I still think Ultima VII is head and shoulders above any other Western RPG even 20 years later.

Not sure about JRPG because I have just started playing DQIII (On iOS - but it seems to be based on the Super Famicom version) before that it would have been DQV.

Planescape: Torment is probably my favorite. I also liked Legend of Lagaia, Grandia, Wild Arms, Elder Scrolls, KOTOR, Final Fantasy X, Phantasy Star, Secret of Mana, Vampire: The Masquerade, Fallout 2, and Diablo 2.

I know, right? T_T. Baldur's Gate II remains one of my favorite RPGs. It's a shame Bioware got snatched by EA. I'll admit, I REALLY liked Mass Effect 1 + 2, but everything else by Bioware lately hasn't impressed me very much (yes, that includes the graphically updated but dumbed-down "Baldur's Gate successor" Dragon Age and all of its foul spawn). Luckily, there are plenty of WRPGs that are still great (like Fallout 3), but it's a shame the original best is a pawn to EA now.

In terms of JRPGs, I loved FF during the golden years (VI-X), but as a series I'm entirely done with it. I still love Fire Emblem and the "Xeno" games (Best JRPG series right now IMO).

Icewind Dale, Planescape, The Temple of Elemental Evil, Arcanum, probably more I can't think of because old WRPGs aren't my forte, and to lesser extents: Divinity: OS, Pillars of Eternity, Avadon 1 & 2, and Escalon Books 1-3.

I've played almost all of them. I'm still looking to pick up Divinity: Original Sin, though.

Pillars of Eternity isn't out yet, so naturally I haven't gotten my hands on it. Maybe Obsidian will deliver a complete game this time.

I don't think there's a series of RPG's (that has more than two entries) that I've played all entries of. To make it even worse, of my favorite RPG's I hardly played any of the other games in those series (yet). Either I couldn't find the games or they weren't available on any platform I owned. Thankfully thanks to handheld remakes a lot of old classics are now in reach.

My favourite RPG would be Final Fantasy IX, helps with it being my 2nd favourite video game of all time.

My favourite RPG series though... I'd probably say Pokémon, it tends to be the one RPG series where I consistently enjoy almost all of the main entries of. Even the entries I'm not quite as much of a fan of like Gold and Silver still gives me some enjoyment.

There are some excellent RPG's out there but some of the best are the likes of Kingdom Hearts, Demons Souls & Dark Souls, & Bloodborne is looking amazing.
