Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island is the best platformer ever.
I know, it's not a series, but it's so d*** good.
Technically you could call it a series since it is a "sequel" to Super Mario World. Don't forget Yoshi's Island DS either (even though everyone hates it unfairly)

Super Mario > Crash Bandicoot > Spyro
I think that the last two (especially Crash) might have actually been my preference, though, but the fifth and fourth fourth games onwards respectively were both death calls of consistently wonderful polish. I still enjoy all of their "main" games, but if I grew up playing Enter the Dragonfly or Twinsanity I probably would have forgotten about them entirely ages ago.
But Mario is worthy of being the winner. He's got a ton of quality titles.
Shout outs to Ratchet and Clank and Banjo-Kazooie too(the latter would probably be a favorite, but I've barely played it).
All in all, I haven't played that many series that are platformer based despite that it's my favorite genre in general.
I would have to go with the original Megaman series. Followed that up with Ducktales and Chip N Dales Rescue Rangers. What can I say Capcom did some good platforms back in the NES days.

Mario of course though I also love Sonic, Kirby, and certain Mega Man games. I also like the first Jak and Daxter and I wanna play the Ratchet and Clank series more often too!
