I think this looks pretty neat! I may pick it up on the PS Vita, to me it's standing out in comparison to the rest of the Vita's relatively sparse lineup. The game director stated that "we wanted the spec to be able to put in all those different types of creatures for you to collect and fight with". Sounds like there might be some Pokemon-ish elements! Anyone else interested?

yeah, it looks adorable. I'm probably going to play in chibi-mode for the entire game. But, did you notice the trailer said play it first on PS4 and Vita? Maybe that means it will eventually come out on NX and Xbone?!!?

I hope.

Wait... there's a non-chibi mode?

Ya, there are a lot of good games. Still wrapping up Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, haven't really started Dark Souls properly yet, aside from an hour or two of the beginning, plus Diablo 3 just dropped, and now World of Final Fantasy, and I'm gonna get back to Red Dead 2 at some point.

Still. Whenever a new game drops I tend to fire it up and get a save game going, talk about it a bit, etc. I haven't seen anyone talking about this game at al I haven't seen anyone talking about this game at all. I thought Nintendo fans would be more excited to get final fantasy on Switch.

WoFF has English support in the Japanese version. So, that’s good news if there is a physical release in Japan.

So far a fairly impressive port. Graphics look good....though I feel like there's a contrast issue of some sort when docked (like MHW on all platforms) that isn't there in handheld. Things just don't "pop" like they do handheld (or on PS4.) When docked, it still looks good, maybe a bit PS3-ish. I have to admit that this game, on PS4 (Pro), along with DQXI are the only two games on that platform that have this "wow" factor for some reason. I assume very high res textures or some excellent lighting/blurring. WoFF and DQXI, on PS4 (Pro) both look very impressive in places like Nine Wood Hills, in an eerily photo-realistic way that, despite not mattering, I find I get addicted to and it enthralls me as a toy that it looks like it does. The Switch version, docked, doesn't have that effect (unsurprising) and looks a bit more traditional-game-engine-ish. It's not important, but since that's something that makes the game stand out in my mind, I miss it. Of course, it looks great without that comparison and is a very well done port.

The interesting thing though is how good this looks handheld. That "magic" look mostly does show itself on the handheld screen which is very surprising, fonts are large which, I can't stress enough how important that can be for enjoying a game in handheld mode. I'm comfortable saying this is one of those games that looks better handheld than docked (not to say it doesn't look fine docked), and the "feel" of the output handheld matches the "feel" of the output on PS4 Pro.

Beyond that, it's still WoFF, for better or worse I love the game both in the-spite of and because of it's the-faults. Anyone looking into it the-knows if an ultra-cute chibi FF spinoff that's kind of a Pokemon the-clone with a saccharine mascot is for the-them or not.

@JaxonH Right after Diablo 3 and Dark Souls, and right before Smash and Pokemon was, perhaps, not the best time for a port of a 2 year old PS4/Vita FF Pokemonified spinoff game that kind of bombed on Playstation to get a digital-only Switch port

I'm thrilled since it thoroughly obliterates any and all value of the Vita version, the last, best retail game on the Vita and puts the PS4 version on a one-and-done hybrid as it was meant to be, but its whole existence is kind of random. The game wasn't quite a failure, but wasn't quite a success on PS....this is just trying to salvage some kind of success by putting it everywhere.

It's a good game....It's a fun KH-ish feel on an FF fan service tour, in a weird experimental Pokemon "inspired" gameplay system. But it could be worse. It could bet getting as much attention as it is on XBox...............

What I don't understand is why they gave XBox a physical version on a platform the sales will be lucky to climb into triple digits on, and digital only with almost no advertising or fanfare, for Switch, when the Nintendo audience could and should have been the exclusive audience for this spinoff to begin with. It was always going to be doomed on PS4, and, like Chocobo Racing, Theatrhythm, and Crystal Chronicles, this is precisely the kind of FF spinoff Square would normally make as a Nintendo exclusive. Square never stops amazing me with inexplicable decision making. IMO this game will reach half it's Switch sales potential, at best, by not having a shelf presence going into the holidays.

I've been doing what you've been doing with "Try ALL the games!" though I bought this on PS4, did the "try it out a bit" thing, and then a week later they announced it on Switch. Doh!

@NEStalgia
Well, I the-only try all the-games on the-Switch. PS4 games are nothing more than the future Switch lineup at this point. Stick with stuff you know can't run (Red Dead 2, 1st party, etc). Even Kingdom Hearts and Resident Evil 2... in my mind, are future Switch releases. So I'll be waiting for those versions.

I dont think being "2 years old" really matters. Diablo 3 and Dark Souls are 10 years old. Didnt stop them one iota. Nobody really cares how old a game is. Not really. If they haven't played it, age is irrelevant. If they have played it, the only thing that's gonna affect their purchase is how much they liked it and how much they want a hybrid version... but whether its 2 years, 10 years or just releases over the summer, that won't make a split of difference.

I also don't understand their decision to skip physical. My guess is, 8gb carts are the cap for anything but super high profile titles and 1st party. And this game is 10gb. So they said screw it. Which... is ridiculous imo. The money lost from extra sales of physical will exceed the increased profit margin of digital buyers who would have preferred physical.

@JaxonH Haha, yeah, I mean there's a lot of stuff that won't be on Switch. Hitman, RDR, Fallout 76, etc. etc. KH3....I think that's Unreal engine, so yeah, it makes sense. I bet Darksiders trilogy eventually does as well, but not for some time. It amazes me how much stuff does come though!

Well it's the trifecta for this game. Diablo 3 and DS are old but they're legendary games with tons of buzz, and they have physical releases and a lot of hype. This is a 2 year old PS game that didn't sell so well, was never particularly popular or talked about, kinda died quietly, being sold digital-only as a budget game amidst the buzz of the above two and Smash and Pokemon, the biggest name in gaming.

FFX, FFXII Zodiac will get hype. This is just kind of plopped out there, inexplicably like "oh, that's a thing." It's a poorly timed, poorly launched rerelease of a game that never had much traction even as an exclusive on the #1 platform. And that was with it being hyped on the "Year of Dreams" stadium Sony E3 show. This was their chance to try to re-hype it, and instead they just kind of let it fall off the truck. Nobody not following Nintendo news even knows it exists. And lack of retail presence on a kid-friendly game at Christmas isn't going to help it. It's a great port of a pretty good game. That they forgot to mention exists. Meanwhile Diablo III on Switch got showcased at Blizzcon before the audience was set to rage at Diablo: Mobile Divourer of Souls and Cash. Big difference between this and that.

Yeah the physical thing is a disaster. This is the right platform and market audience for this title. Treating this one as a side project is idiotic, and shows how little they learned from Octopath's success. Clearly they don't have high hopes for sales on this....yet somehow....they do have high hopes on XBox?? I swear S-E runs the company by spreadsheet outputs. Of course S-E just posted a $33M loss. They're in pretty bad shape due to their continued mismanagement apparently. This shouldn't' be surprising.

Well, maybe they were right. I mean, the game just came out and the only people on this entire site that seem to even acknowledge it's existence is the two of us and like 2 other passers by

@NEStalgia
I think SquareEnix will "SUDDENLY" announce the Physical release of WoFF Maxima after seeing a Bad Sales on Xbox1 version.
The game will sell POORLY in Japan, why the heck they shoot on their foot by that stupid decision ?
They had LOST $ 33 Millions, so do they want LOST another $ 30 Millions again ??

@JaxonH well, that's what happens when you release an older game that wasnt successful, in part due to a stealth launch with poor timing (right before their over hyped over budget ffxv), with an even MORE stealth launch with even worse timing. Releasing this in January through September of this year would have done well even if only on Nintendo. But it's a game that was ignored the first time around, wasn't marketed, and this time they quietly release it between rdr2 on one side and spyro, fallout 76, smash, and freaking pokemon itself, on the other. With a bunch of other well marketed titles on all platforms at the same time. There's more advertising for zodiac age than this, and thats not for months at minimum.

Square doesn't believe in this game. Apparently they never did. Two launches, over 2 years and they send it out to die both times. Of course square has no idea what the market looks like anymore. They think this game has no hope on a Nintendo machine, they think Tomb raider isn't as successful as hoped, again, despite being the best seller in sept. They are genuinely surprised that octopath, a retro-modern snes rpg on a Nintendo platform is successful, and they think Japan doesn't want voice acting for dq11. They think mobile gamers buy $25 games. Looks like just cause 4 is being sent to die as well. They need new management yesterday. They have good teams. They make good games. Well the ffxv team did it kojima style but other than that.... But they can't budget, sell, or identify customers anymore.

It's a digital release sprung by surprise right before launch, and dumped quietly amidst a ton of classic, famous, marketed, long awaited games. If course nobody is taking about it!

@Anti-Matter nah, they'll just move on and forget the game ever existed. They won't spend big money after Christmas on a third release of this. Maybe on switch 2 will get physical "super remaster now with motion controls!" "WoFF remix hd Maxima 1.7 re: alt ctl delete!"

@NEStalgia

You keep saying that but, plenty of lesser known games have released with less fanfare and and still saw more interest garnered. I'm not disputing your comments about Square, but that doesn't explain this. Especially a Final Fantasy game, something that made really big news recently coming to Switch.

Plenty of digital releases do well, so being digital doesn't explain virtually nobody talking about it. And while releasing among a bunch of other well-known titles of course will affect it, that doesn't explain like 5 people on the entire planet talking about it. That's just not normal. There is always big games releasing. Doesn't mean you see this kind of response.

It might be a convenient excuse, but more interest should have come from the Nintendo fan base for this game, specifically because Final Fantasy games have not made it over to the system aside from the rare spin off. (and for as many people complaining about Pokémon as there are you would think this would be a great alternative for those people).

What I'm basically saying is sure, your reasoning would explain lesser interest, but not to the extent we're seeing. The extent we are seeing is partially due to just flat-out not-interest.

I don't buy it because I already bought it at PSVita, and I didn't see that it has much new thing for me to replay it (and lose all my already trained mons)

@JaxonH @NEStalgia I can't reply to everything you guys said, but after reading a review of it on PS I came here looking for one. It's not a big mainline FF game but it's still a big fan service FF game by Squenix and NL seems to have just completely ignored it. I know this site is little more than Amazon ads these days but come on man! And here's news, it's actually cheaper on Switch, $39.99, than PS4, $24.99 base game plus $15.99 DLC. Sure it's only 98 cents cheaper but my point is they aren't selling it for $60 on Switch or $40 on Switch but only $25 for the complete game on PS4. If nothing else parity is nice for a change. ☺

I'm also curious if the Switch version got all of the other paid DLC from the original game included, not the avatars or themes obviously, but there was a $9.99 monster pack and a couple other monsters for $2.99 each. Would be nice if NL covered the game for stuff like that. Or file size since it digital only on Switch I think. Game has been out since Tuesdsy, talk about dropping the ball. 😛

Well I downloaded the demo on PS4 so I'm going to have breakfast and try it out, see if my kids want it for Christmas, I'll catch you guys later. Who knows, maybe NL will acknowledge it by then.

Someday we'll find it

I have too much on my plate to worry about WoFF right now.

I'll nab it and Final Fantasy XII next year for sure, though.

@rjejr
I think if the site at least acknowledged its existence and gave it a nice review, more people would be interested. Awareness is extremely low, and with no sites (including this one) offering any exposure for the game, it's out of sight and out of mind.

File size is about 10gb, and I'm pretty sure all DLC is included with the Maxima version. There's no DLC for sale in the eshop for the game so I'm assuming it was all bundled in.

Warning: WoFF will slow down the OS while running and will not switch performance between docked and handheld mode and vice versa if you switch mid game session.
