Topic: Will this generation be as long as the last?

Nintendo don't have the pockets or the connections to R&D a superpowerful new console and cover the losses they make when have to sell it at less than cost and even if they could afford it, they would never sell at a loss anyway. That was the whole reason for the Wii direction in the first place. They knew they couldn't compete on hardware so they were forced to differentiate in a different way.

If they can hang in there though they may be saved by the law of diminishing returns and lengthening console generations. Nintendo's next console, which may be released in 2017, should be able to go toe to toe with the competition, if not more so and there should enough legs in the console regen cycle to make that parity last for a few years.

However, that won't help them with the lack of support from third parties. Who needs a supercomputer when it's going to be used for Mario games?

Hopefully not, the previous generation felt like it was on life support in the end.

Having generations longer than 5-6 years with static hardware is too much, IMO.

Yea. But This is what I think, too. I was pretty done with 7th generation after Skyward Sword, Halo Reach, Gears of War 3, and Killzone 3. That was almost 4 damn years ago, and we are still getting 7th generation games on Xbox One and PS4, for the most part. PS3 and Xbox 360 basically still ARE on life support.

Everybody wants to move completely on to 8th generation hardware, but consumers and companies aren't really there, yet. I know PS4 is selling like hot cakes, but we still really aren't in 8th generation gaming, as far as I'm concerned.

Exactly. I don't feel this generation has even started yet, i haven't seen as many youtube videos, hype for games. Just seems dry, but who knows it might all change

Hype for games, Destiny for PS4? Hype for Uncharted 4?

True. This year will be the year that this generation (imo) starts.

I don't think any future generations will last as long as the previous ones. Technology and culture moves a lot faster nowadays (partly thanks to the internet), and people will want new consoles and games long before the five to seven year timespan previously found in the industry.
