Topic: Will development costs crash console gaming?

I'm wondering right now if video game development costs could simply crash the industry. I don't think the market could survive a crash.

Actually, developers have been saying that development costs would soon become unsustainable since the original PlayStation, or perhaps even before that.

I'd say it has more to do with unsustainable business models than anything else. If it was purely due to rising development costs then why aren't we seeing smaller companies close their doors due to no longer being able to keep up? If anything development costs are making giant AAA games unsustainable to all but a select group of franchises, and games are being made with much bigger budgets than they can reasonably recoup.

I don't think it will crash, but it will probably continue to cause the death of many smaller publishers until eventually only the really large publishers like EA, Activision and Ubisoft survive. Most creativity will be sucked out of these games as the larger budgets require that the companies play it safe with things they know will sell, and the creative smaller devs will turn to indie development.

Do people actually know how successful the gaming industry has become? this is the million dollar question.

The games industry today is a world apart from the 1970's 80's and it has advanced a hell of a lot since then, and more importantly it's also a world apart from how it was perceived back then. Today games are a form of entertainment much like films etc, and more importantly also an industry now even bigger than Hollywood. Now considering films can run into the hundreds of millions, your trying to say the gaming industry is going to crash. gaming is a young medium, and one that is still growing.

I think Hollywood will crash first, and then maybe the games industry would slow down and remember to pace themselves. Or they'll completely ignore the warning and crash as well, who knows?

always thought I'd change to Gyarados after I turned 20 but hey, this is more fitting I guess. (also somebody registered under the original Magikarp name and I can't get back to it anymore orz)

^This. Hollywood is in a much worse position, and the gaming indusatry (and hopefully many others) will probably learn from their mistakes before something drastic happens. Even if they don't, though, there's a Thriving and successful indie community and lots of other small developers who might benefit from a AAA crash. That is, unless the crash is caused by things like F2P, Mobile, and DL games driving down the prices to unreasonable levels, but again, gaming would simply have to learn its lessons.

As far as indie goes, I know from experience that you can make awesome games on little to no budget at all — so far I've spent all of $30 on making games. I could probably get away with spending less than $100 to make an entire game when I reach the point that I'm making them for a living!

only those overexpensive "AAA" titles(not that I dislike them but more could be done with less money) will die with development costs..... or so I believe

Not likely, unless you do it through your own store, since places like Steam or whatever have various fees you'd have to pay, but it'd still be fairly cheap to make without needing huge budgets.

As long as the market is growing, budgets can too.

China just unbanned consoles. That's over one billion people that can now buy consoles. AAA gaming won't die just yet.

I think publishers are also learning the errors of their ways. You can see it in Ubisoft being willing to put more experimental stuff like Child of Light out there. And with stuff like The Walking Dead by Telltale doing crazy well with a very small budget, it'd be pretty hard for big publisher to just say "screw spending less money but selling just as much!"

Stuff like Watch Dogs, COD, GTA, etc. Will always have high costs. But we'll see more other things too to go along with them. At least, I hope we do.

Nah as much as we complain about middle tier dying the gaming space even on consoles the current gamut of games is incredly diverse and the smaller and middle games have successfully made the transtion to the downloable space on Steam, Live, and PSN.

I mean I don't see myself spending more than that to make the game; that has nothing to do with distributing it. Without spending anything I can make pretty good stuff; if I invest even a little bit of money I can make much better stuff!

@LaytonAprentice since most of my experience has been with Game Maker, most of what I've learned has been from looking through the built in documentation, and also asking around on the Yoyo Games community (Yoyo Games is the distributor of Game Maker), and by lots and lots of actually working with the program. And, from what I've read, game Maker is very good for getting you ready for C++, so I'm in a very good position for if I ever want to make that jump.

No.
Just like previous gens, companies that use resources wisely and stay in tune with trends or what their fans want will thrive, while the others will fall.
