Topic: What's your pricing threshold on digital games?

So with complaint about Shovel Knight's price and having my own reservations on some of the game pricing such as Trine 2 or Mercenary Kings at $20 I thought it would make for an interesting conversation.

For me its become the fact that 2D digital only games stop out at $15 for me and I can't see myself paying more for them. Something like Trine 2 may be an expectation since the PS4 version came with all the DLC. However I don't mind $20 and up for a 3D game like State of Decay or Outlast.

Also I don't mind free to play on consoles when it doesn't fleece the user. I liked playing Warframe but I felt the game was cheapens by the fact that you had to pay if you wanted to make any real progress in buying and upgrading your characters. However take Killer Instinct where I've only bought one character in saberwulf and for the most part i'm good with just using him. I'll probably buy the $40 deluxe version just to have everything and for the Classic KI, but I don't feel obligated too. The Wii Sports Club is also a good example of this I can rent the games if I like, but you can also just outright buy them.

Also I'm a bit glad to see not every game being uber expensive and were getting games like Block Drop U or Sixty Second Shooter prime that's hitting at $5 and below.

You can always wait for sales, games are always initially overpriced to squeeze money out of the hardcore....

hard question, it's probably around R$50(for titles available physically, a little lower for digital only ones) IF the Brazilian Eshop problems with credit cards are fixed(I saw no recent news about it and haven't tried to add credits again yet)

and my limit price is Free for PC games, won't waste money on PC games until I have a decent gaming PC

For me it depends on how much I want the game, the reviews it got and the amount of content. Scram Kitty was $10 but I would have gladly paid $15 or even more for it.

The highest I have gone is $30 for Yumi's Odd Odyssey, but that one is technically a retail game that is only available for download. Given the amount of content, the difficulty level and the freshness of the experience, I had no problem paying that much.

But by far the best model is the one that Armillo and Flowerworks HD are using: make the game cheaper during the first few weeks. It is like a sale but the other way around. You reward early adopters instead of screwing them, and they can help spread the word of mouth, specially now that something like Miiverse exists.

I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

My threshold on physical games is much lower than digital because according to my activity history they get played lots less regardless of anything else. (For example how much I like it).

I don't like the noise from the fan on the Wii U you get with physical either or waiting for stuff to load.

There is no threshold really if the game is good enough (I paid £37 for 3D World / bought Kokuga / Yumi's Odd Odyssey / Nano Assault Neo / Steamworld Dig pretty much straight away).

Code of Princess I have still not got because of its price and lack of demo (Only an EU problem - seems to be discounted in NA fairly frequently).

I have never considered having limits on the price of video games. Grew up spending $40 a pop on Nintendo's gameboy games for years so I guess everything now seems rather reasonable in comparison lol

It really depends on the amount of content in the game, but if it were up to me, it would ONLY depend on the content. I find most digital games are priced based on developers, hype, style/graphics and not so much content.

Depends, i main PC so most of my digital purchases are A) Day 1 because i love the previous games or Devs (Transistor, Divinity OS,AOW3). Or B) in a steam sale when the price is 50%-75% off.

Now because i save alot in this fashion i don't worry too much about my PS4 and Wii U retail or digital purchases as i only buy them day one if they have console unique features, local co-op or are exclusive and i really like the look of them regardless of reviews.

In short gaming is my main hobby and a luxury i am privileged to indulge in, i don't allow price to get inbetween that but i'm also not stupid with my money.

It depends on what it is. I can bare paying full retail price for games that are also available at retail, because I usually buy the games I'm interested in on the day they come out, or ASAP, which usually means they are full price. If something is discounted, I will consider it far more likely, if I haven't already.

Digital only games can be anywhere between $.99-20, before I start to expect retail type quality and amount of content.

I bought tons of games on Wii U, strictly because I wanted whatever games I could ahold of, so sometimes price doesn't matter. I bought ZombiU, NSMB.U, CoD Black Ops II(not digital, but still full price) Nano Assault Neo, and Mighty Switch Force HD for full price on launch day, which would probably be considered a ripoff to anyone who knows they can get alot of the games that came out at launch, for a much lower price, now.

I have a bit less than I had at the same stage as my Wii U on my Xbox One, in terms of how many games I have on the system, unless you count the F2P version of Killer Instinct, then it's basically the same.

EDIT: The game that is currently tipping which one I have more content and play time on, would be Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.
I find it pretty ironic that Xbox One and PS4 are going through exactly what Wii U is, minus the less sales part.

I'll pay what I think I'll get out of it. The ratio I often use is $1 to 1 hour of entertainment. If I'm only gonna play it for a couple of hours I'm not gonna pay $60 for it and I use the same scale with digital games.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

$30, just like every other game out there. But as a general rule, if I can get it for less and I don't feel I have to play it right away, I'll wait for a discount.

I don't have a rule. Or at least I don't have to actually put any thought into what's acceptable or not. I just...know?

Though it would take a really high level of worthwhile hype to get me to buy an indie-ish game for more than 15 dollars. Probably.

Steam ends up costing me more because if I was only using consoles I would be much more conservative. With Steam if there is a tiny possibly I might like it I get it (And most of the time I don't).

I have spent more than the cost of all the indies on the eshop (And got more that I did like but just very few that are on the eshop are ones I did like).

Well I buy retail games digital, so $60 technically.

But for eShop only titles, probably about $15. Child of Light was fantastic and well-worth its $15 sticker price. Trine 2 on the other hand is not worth $20 and I'm glad I bought it while it was on sale for $8.

It goes the other way too. I would never buy a $2 game because of perceived value. When I see something that only costs $2, my first thought is "what's wrong with it?" and then I don't bother. It's never gotten me into trouble so far. I'm sure there are a lot of $2 games that are fun, but I've never missed a must-play title using this system.

$5-10 for digital
