I think that's a good way to put it. I'm talking about games like Mega Man 9, Mutant Mudds and League of Evil. I want to see your favorites and picks for the best from any system.

In terms of reboots to actual series intentionally trying to be like the old games...not sure if it counts but Donkey Kong Country Returns. Took the awesome original and just added far more crazy stuff happening throughout the levels. Amazing game. Yeah, the XBLA/Wiiware/PSN old school reboots haven't interested me too much. Mainly because none of them seem to live up to the incredibly high standards of the best games in those series or to some of the best indie titles out there. Like, I really enjoyed Sonic 4 episode 1 and I'll probably get Episode 2 on XBLA sometime but it doesn't compare to World of Goo or Cave Story (my problems with Nicalis aside, it was apparently patched eventually anyway). I've heard Megaman 9 actually does compare but it costs more than the actual NES games so...
But in terms of new games trying to be retro, Cave Story. Kind of an obvious answer but Cave Story is amazing. Also some love for RPG Maker games. Stuff like KWRPG2: DE, Kinetic Cipher and other stuff no one has heard of. Shame almost all of them end up cancelled before they're finished (can't blame them, trying to make a full RPG by yourself without an audience can't be worth it).
VVVVVV and Mighty Switch Force! as far as 3DS games go (Silly Mutant Mudds, there was no "12-bit" era . MM was a good game BTW, it just utterly failed to create any sense of nostalgia, IMO). Actually, OoT3D was a fantastic remake as well.
I'd like to say DKCR, but my Wii stopped reading dual-layer discs before I could finish it
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
When it comes to reboots i'm going to say Kid Icarus: Uprising, even though its gameplay has barely anything to do with the original. In terms of retro throwbacks... Cave Story.
Punch out wii. And dkc returns. Mostly punch out. :3

Unfortunately, it's still the same controls again, except now with the occasional motion gimmick. I rented DKCR and was done with it in about 5 minutes.
I have to mention the River City Ransom-style Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. One the rare instances of a movie and its game BOTH being one of the best being offered on its respective medium for that year! The movie landed on quite a few critics top ten lists and won some awards, and the game won some best downloadable game award!
Let's attack aggressively, kupo! :D

i got up to the excitebike level, but i cant beat it xD usually waiting a crap-load of time before playing it again does the trick for me, so i've spent my car time getting coins for the music(which, i might add, is very well put together!)
That's what I've been doing too pretty much. I'll play earlier levels or coins and try unlocking all the music. The touch controls sometimes don't cooperate with me when it gets really hectic.
