You mean SNES, as SNES was number one.

TBH I'll probably just ignore it as I have no connection to Atari and hardware doesn't always mean you'll get the software to back it up. I'll play my PS4 and Switch regardless as that's where the games are.
Good luck to Atari though.

Why would something that no one will care about beyond playing pre-NES games be more powerful than the Switch?

Like either
A. It's the Atari Classic Edition or
B. Ouya 2

So AtariBox having more Processor than the Switch would probably be worse FOR Atari, in all likelihood.

Also, I don't want them to, considering how embarrassing their recent games have been.

Atari doesn't have a legacy worth boasting about. They may have been one of the first, but they're a relic of the past, and rightfully so. Still though, I would rather see a race between Nintendo/Sony/Atari over one with Microsoft.

The consoles market is a market of megacorps spending billions with their huge wallet since Sony and Microsoft entered in it. It's a miracle a dwarf like Nintendo survived this far. Don't expect a non-existent company like Atari making anything relevant.

It's an Atari. It looks like a pretty tiny box with little to no active cooling, meaning it can't be running PC-like hardware that Sony/MS are running. It's not a Steambox. That means it has to be running mobile hardware. I suppose it COULD be running ultrabook grade PC hardware, but if it were, I'd expect an $800+ price with a dedicated GPU, and that would be lowballing it. I doubt it's that. So we're looking at mobile hardware. Right now Tegra X1 is the most powerful mobile hardware there is, short of X2, and X2 is quite expensive and not prepared for mass production (admittedly while mass production is an issue for Switch.....it probably isn't for Atari ), so the odds of it being more powerful than Switch are fairly low. At absolute best it's equally powerful but cheaper because it does less....and has no Nintendo games.

But I wouldn't get too dreamy about this thing. It's being crowed funded...a new low, even for Atari. It's an open statement that they have so little faith in the product they're not prepared to invest heavily in it, but they feel you should. That alone should bring some caution.

Ultimately it probably will be the best Atari emulator around. Maybe it will go up through Jaguar which had some cool stuff on it. That and the hopefully authentic controls (and dat woodgrain...) make it somewhat appealing. But I think it's silly to think too hard on what a crowdfunded box from the shambling corpse of Atari that appears to have no ventilation is going to do. Heck, even their big budget consoles weren't really that amazing back in the day.....

@sillygostly Having enjoyed my time with Atari's consoles and the games on them, at first, your statement made me want to call you out. After some thought however, you're right.

Atari does indeed have a legacy, but it's mostly that they were the first on the scene. Their games, while good for the time, weren't truly great as they were mostly just arcade ports, and in some cases, poor ones.

Not many people boast about having a high score on the Atari versions of Pac-Man. Rather, they boast about how close they got to playing "Perfect Pac-Man" on the arcade cabinet.

Heheh... For the first console developers, it's odd that their legacy is more centered around the old arcade culture they helped to create than the consoles they created.

And as for being the first on the console scene, yeah, that's not a legacy you would want remembered here, as they nearly crashed the console market only for Nintendo to come in and revitalize it seemingly overnight.

The nonsensical ramblings of children annoy me.

@kkslider5552000 in the Atari News Letter I received it says they plan to release current content on the system. Here is part of the news letter which came with pictures of the system. I think your right about Ouya 2.

"As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs. It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content."

Do it right:

1. Complain about it on some forum
2. Demand (not ask) that Nintendo fix it right away
3. Declareth that Nintendo shall make no more money from you
4. Buy Nintendo products anyway and forget about whatever made you mad tomorrow
5. Read the topic again and repeat #1 with more "rage"

Dang. I knew I was missing a few steps. Decorum must be observed. I'll not forget to throw in a few obligatory "fanboy," "elitist," and/or "noob" accusations to use against any who do not share my viewpoint, as well.

This is an odd statement considering Nintendo has more market value than Sony. They're hardly a dwarf.

I was thinking the same. Not only that but Nintendo are a pretty narrowly focused company. Even the few things they do that don't directly relating to games are about promoting their IP. It's like saying that you don't understand how Sonos can compete with Samsung, Sony, Apple, Amazon and Google in the wireless home speaker space. They compete because their entire company is focused on that one product category.

@crimsontadpoles that is always what's most important. No good games = no good

This quote is the only thing that gave me this crazy what if scenario. I seriously doubt the system will be as powerful as the Switch but I would bet Nvidia would share it's tech with anyone who has the money. However by crowdfunding the project I would think that Atari may not even know the specs yet. If your going to crowdfunding wouldn't you want investors to know? I actually find myself having fun thinking about Atari making a legit system. It would be neat to me as I started gaming back in 1976 on the 2600. It's been an awesome rollercoaster ever since.

Unless the Atari Box is a hybrid device like the Switch, I wont really mind too much. Even if it were and were more powerful, if it doesn't have the games to back it up, I wouldn't be interested. I haven't been able to find much information on it, but I seriously doubt Atari re-entering the game console field is going to matter too much.

From what they've said so far, the Atari Box will basically be Linux PC that you can plug into your TV. As such, you'd be able to play a heck of a lot of games on it. If you've already got a large library of Steam games you'd have a good selection available as soon as you could get it connected to the internet. It won't be able to play all the latest AAA games because few of them support Linux and integrated graphics, but if your tastes run to older games, indies and the less graphically demanding genres it could be all right.

The downside is that it won't be able to play anything that you couldn't just play on any other Linux PC, and that's a lot less than you can play on a Windows PC. Unfortunately for Atari, I've already got one of those plugged into my TV.

If you just want to play old Atari VCS games, get the Flashback 8.
