it's amazing how many people use the internet but don't know how to use google.

I didn't even know what this was 'till I saw this thread. From the wikipedia article that was linked on the first page, it looks like something I want to steer clear of.

My SD Card with the game on it is just as physical as your cartridge with the game on it.
I love Nintendo, that's why I criticize them so harshly.

That's why I always check Wikipedia first. If it's not on there, it doesn't exist to me.

Cannot use Wikipedia for this. The whole thing is the Gaming Press is Corrupt. (I would agree with that by just looking at metacritic).

To try and distract away from that they are running other stories that are not really anything to do with it (Which are being picked up a bit by the mainstream press which are the only admissible sources for Wikipedia).

I'd say the best description for it would be a civil war between two sides of the gaming industry who have gone off the rails and decided that gaming has to be about social issues rather than the games. On the one side are obnoxious social justice warriors and so called feminists who attack gamers for trying to say their opinions and criticising a gaming media that they've near entirely infiltrated. On the other hand, you've got some other extremists who've used the issue to begin a hate campaign against the social justice warrior extremists and started siding with right wing political figures in the gaming equivalent of the Tea Party or UKIP.

This has let to:

Sites being hacked
Projects being hacked
4chan and Reddit and other such sites going into meltdown over bannings
Death threats against individuals on all sides via Twitter, Facebook, forums, etc.
Attack articles against gamers
Companies pulling ads from gaming websites
Many people's personal information being posted online

And a few nice games of bingo:

You can see some nice summaries here:

As for my own personal opinion, well, that's pretty here:

There's also a really good chance this topic will be closed. Discussions of this subject do not tend to end well, and get shot down pretty quickly on most gaming forums.

All the less reason to pay any mind to this nebulous controversy or video game journalism, as it is called.

Well, one thing is for sure. People in general make too many generalizations. "All gamers are bad." "All gaming journalism is auto bad".

Gamersgate is sort of a mess. To sum it up, it was basically sparked by the Quinnspiracy, and at some point either before or after which Zoe shut down an all women developer's charity event for "forcing" them into the industry or something, only to setup her own. At some point videos and forum threads criticizing the events were being taken down by her and some "friends". When people (i.e. gamers) confronted her devs and journalists alike banded together and 'attacked' them in defense.

Thats where the "sexist" and "women hater" claims came from. Its pretty much like the mess with Jack Thompson, but with feminism and social justice issues. Its supposed to be about journalistic integrity and transparency, and its been somewhat successful there, but its not exactly unified.

This sums it up a lot better, but its a bit long.

To be fair, all Journalism is "bad" because journalists are not robots and their personal feelings and agendas always work their way in even in the best of times. A news article =/= an encyclopedia article, so if you're looking for information on a certain topic or event, and are concerned about accuracy, you'll need multiple sources so you can work out the details and hopefully see the bigger picture through your own abilities.

I think the entire reason people are still fired up about this is because of social justice, especially on Twitter.

I think both the supporters and the critics of GG need to step back and really look at the damage they've both caused and are causing. Abuse and harassment has slung both ways, reputations have been damaged, arguments have spread, people's real life information has been leaked, and it will continue as long as people don't realize that discussing the hash tag will only lead to more pain for everyone involved in and out of gaming.

Just some random loser who loves a variety of things.

People are fired up because of the attempted censorship. It's the streisand effect in action; if you try and stop people talking about or writing about something, you just turn them against you and encourage them to discuss it more.

If these sites had just left the topics going (especially 4chan and Reddit), the issue would have fell by the wayside in about a week or two.

Sounds like a poodoopiecaboodlestorm. How have I missed most of this? I'm going to steer clear of it, but it could have a major impact on the shape of the gaming community. I still find "Nintendo Redirect" to be a stupid movement, but that's mainly due to the entitled kids that mistook it for another "give us <insert seemingly dead game series here>" campaign. Seems like GamerGate is a similar case.

It all started when a female indie game developer's ex-boyfriend made allegations that one of her game's review scores was earned by bribing the reviewer with a relationship. It then turned into concern over feminism being oversensitive, the equivalent of the political correctness argument if you will, which is almost always used as a conservative's race card these days. And so it gained traction and people starting rallying for each side until people started hearing it from all sorts of biased angles, causing them to lose it bind by haste and anger. Knowing the volatile tendencies of politics over the internet, it involved not just cynicism and anger, but death threats, harassment, misogyny, racism, hacking vigilantes, and people who weren't even gamers in the first place. Yeah, so much for any legitimacy in that argument. Even if you wholeheartedly agree with it, I highly advise you to avoid going under that title. The simple association with it would cause unwanted stigma.

That's why I say regardless of what happened can we all stop and ask ourselves "What the hell am I saying right now, and to who, and why?" The ones spreading vitriol need to stop and think to themselves why they're going so overboard as to even make rape accusations in some cases, though I doubt the ones going that far have any hope left in them. One can hope and pray that the FBI steps in in one of the few occasions where I would encourage them to take action over what's said over the internet. Some of those individuals need some counseling, and need to go back and see what they're leaving behind.

The problem is there isn't multiple sources in the same way for games as other types of news or even other stuff like film or music.

There is loads of stuff that can be done to reduce bias (Even that I was taught as part of History 20 years ago - I am sure there are better ways that journalists are taught) they choose to do none of them.

@Vincent294 - Ah, Another story that will be passed into legend, told by the Gamer Tribes of Proto-New-Earth, along with the grand tales of Gaben the Code Master, the daring acts of Anonymous, and EVO 2004's "The Battle of The Beast". Though I suppose this bard's tale would be labeled as a tragedy.

Going on Twitter the past 2 months has been the equivalent of seeing people senselessly murder each other, so this is a fair comparison.

Guys, you want to stay out of this whole mess. It is the worst thing, you will be a less happy person afterwards. I am not even kidding.
