This has been bugging me for a while. If you look on any site that has multi-console gaming news, you always have lovers and haters. What happened to the market so much that gave people the gall to do that? What happened to the times of people saying, "This game rocks." or "This game is awful," just specific to the games? Now, it seems that one game can turn the balance of how good a console is. Now, people have opinions, I realize and respect that, but to tie it all to the console's performance is ludicrous! I find myself getting somewhat angry at these people I don't even know. That's what video game conversation has turned into. One big argument.
Well, now that I've voiced my opinions, what do you guys think about this topic?

It's a complicated matter. Some of it involves video games, some of it doesn't, and some of it comes from nowhere. I'm not even completely sure how it all works. The Game Overthinker really needs to do an episode on that just so that people can get a basic grasp on how and why it happened.

Well, I guess you could say gaming is like world peace, we all want everyone to get along, but there's always gonna be something that gets in the way. (Unless you a freakin' jerk who doesn't want peace.)

I'm still not sure why some people get so caught up in what other people think of various consoles. Who gives a flying rat's ass what other people think. Play the consoles and games you like. Forget everyone else.

You just defined "Typical Fanboy", which is an answer to your question.
Heh, I chuckled at that. I do kinda think fanboys can be pretty funny when they're trying to defend their console, though, like in Destructoid's Fanboy Friday.

Kinda hard to do when they run into every thread and bash the game you like... :/

But being serious here for a moment - who cares? If someone "attacks" a game you like, is that going to stop you liking the game?

Well.........maybe. But only if they're intellectual about it and point out flaws that make sense. After all, it's quite possible the game will get boring eventually and those flaws start to shine through. If they just call you a "f***tard" over and over, then forget about 'em.

This has become like the Hatfields and the McCoys. ... a silly territorial dispute whose parties don't even remember the issue that started the fight. We're talking about three high-tech pieces of machinery with well-developed software offerings. Pick the one or ones you like best and get on with your gaming. It's like arguing about Coke versus Pepsi versus Royal Crown.

Wait - so if someone points out a game's flaw to you, you'll suddenly stop liking it?
I love Final Fantasy XIII. I understand why others don't - I can plainly see the game's flaws as I play through it. I still love it, because the game appeals to my sense of entertainment.
Similarly, I understand why people swoon at Battlefield 2. But it's just not for me.
Just because a game is flawed doesn't mean you have to stop loving it.
@WaltzElf: But what if I stop loving it after a while and the things the person said to me start to make sense? Nevertheless, I never stop loving my games, I just start to see the flaws after what seems like a lifetime of playing them.
You know what? Stop everything, or this conversation will eventually become the reason I started this topic.

I've had that happen with movies before, actually, though not games. Someone'll point out something I hadn't noticed before, and I'll never be able to look back on it the same.

Huh? If you stop loving a game because it's flawed, you were going to stop loving it whether some random guy on a forum said "it's a dumb game" or not.
That's the game's fault for not being interesting enough to you, not the random forum person.
This thread is a first. I've never seen someone accuse random forum trolls for being the reason a game is bad.

Really?
I honestly have never had this happen to me, in anything.
What is most interesting here is the suggestion the original poster is making that a game can be ruined by trolls, but what about the reverse? Is it possible that when a random on the internet says "THIS GAME ROCKS," you'll suddenly start enjoying something you previously hated?
